The Pandora multi-algorithm approach to automated pattern recognition in LAr TPC detectors
The development and operation of Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LAr TPCs) for neutrino physics has created a need for new approaches to pattern recognition, in order to fully exploit the superb imaging capabilities offered by this technology. The Pandora Software Development Kit provides functionality to aid the process of designing, implementing and running pattern recognition algorithms. It promotes the use of a multi-algorithm approach to pattern recognition: individual algorithms each address a specific task in a particular topology; a series of many tens of algorithms then carefully builds-up a picture of the event. The input to the Pandora pattern recognition is a list of 2D Hits. The output from the chain of over 70 algorithms is a hierarchy of reconstructed 3D Particles, each with an identified particle type, vertex and direction
Radial Velocity Studies of Close Binary Stars.VIII
Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital velocity
variations are presented for the seventh set of ten close binary systems: V410
Aur, V523 Cas, QW Gem, V921 Her, V2357 Oph, V1130 Tau, HN UMa, HX UMa, HD
93917, NSV 223. All systems, but three (V523 Cas, HD 93917, NSV 223), were
discovered photometrically by the Hipparcos mission. All systems are
double-lined (SB2) binaries and all, but the detached, very close system V1130
Tau, are contact binaries. The broadening-function permitted improvement of the
orbital elements for V523 Cas, which was the only system observed before for
radial velocity variations. Spectroscopic/visual companions were detected for

A Bayesian technique for improving the sensitivity of the atmospheric neutrino L/E analysis
This paper outlines a method for improving the precision of atmospheric
neutrino oscillation measurements. One experimental signature for these
oscillations is an observed deficit in the rate of charged-current
interactions with an oscillatory dependence on , where
is the neutrino propagation distance, and is the neutrino
energy. For contained-vertex atmospheric neutrino interactions, the
resolution varies significantly from event to event. The
precision of the oscillation measurement can be improved by incorporating
information on resolution into the oscillation analysis. In
the analysis presented here, a Bayesian technique is used to estimate the
resolution of observed atmospheric neutrinos on an
event-by-event basis. By separating the events into bins of
resolution in the oscillation analysis, a significant improvement in

Geomagnetic conditions in Ireland During the St. Patrick's Day 2015 Storm

<p>Abstract:</p>
<p>Two coronal mass ejections were launched in quick succession from the Sun on March 15, 2015. They impacted the Earth's magnetosphere two days later on St. Patrick's Day (March 17), resulting in a geomagnetic storm with a planetary K-Index of 8.</p>
<p>Magnetic variations were measured across a recently deployed magnetometer network in Ireland and geoelectric fields were measured at a site in Co. Leitrim (magnetic latitude 57.08°). A local K-index maximum of 7 was calculated at Birr, Co. Offaly (magnetic latitude 55.97), while the aurora</p>
<p>borealis accompanying the geomagnetic storm was visible as far south as Co. Waterford (magnetic latitude 55.13°).</p>
<p>The British Geological Survey thin-sheet surface electric field model was used together with our magnetometer measurements to calculate electric fields and geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) in the Irish power grid.</p>
<p>Although it was one of the most magnetically disturbed days in a decade, with dB/dt reaching ~50 nT/min, the peak GIC level estimated in the Irish power grid was ~10 Amps. Note, no adverse effects were reported in the Irish power grid demonstrating its resilience to geomagnetic storms of this magnitude.</p
Radial Velocity Studies of Close Binary Stars. XV
Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital radial
velocity variations are presented for the last eight close binary systems
analyzed the same way as in the previous papers of this series: QX And, DY Cet,
MR Del, HI Dra, DD Mon, V868 Mon, ER Ori, and Y Sex. For another seven systems
(TT Cet, AA Cet, CW Lyn, V563 Lyr, CW Sge, LV Vir and MW Vir) phase coverage is
insufficient to provide reliable orbits but radial velocities of individual
components were measured. Observations of a few complicated systems observed
throughout the DDO close-binary program are also presented; among them an
especially interesting is the multiple system V857 Her which - in addition to
the contact binary - very probably contains one or more sub-dwarf components of
much earlier spectral type. All suspected binaries which were found to be most
probably pulsating stars are briefly discussed in terms of mean radial
velocities and projected rotation velocities (v sin i) as well as spectral type
estimates. In two of them, CU CVn and V752 Mon, the broadening functions show a
clear presence of non-radial pulsations. The previously missing spectral types
for the DDO I paper are given here in addition to such estimates for most of
the program stars of this paper.Comment: submitted to A
Geomagnetically Induced Currents in the Irish Power Network during Geomagnetic Storms
Geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) are a well-known terrestrial space
weather hazard. They occur in power transmission networks and are known to have
adverse effects in both high and mid-latitude countries. Here, we study GICs in
the Irish power transmission network (geomagnetic latitude 54.7--58.5
N) during five geomagnetic storms (06-07 March 2016, 20-21 December 2015, 17-18
March 2015, 29-31 October 2003 and 13-14 March 1989). We simulate electric
fields using a plane wave method together with two ground resistivity models,
one of which is derived from magnetotelluric measurements (MT model). We then
calculate GICs in the 220, 275 and 400~kV transmission network. During the
largest of the storm periods studied, the peak electric field was calculated to
be as large as 3.8~V~km\textsuperscript{-1}, with associated GICs of up to 23~A
using our MT model. Using our homogenous resistivity model, those peak values
were 1.46~V~km\textsuperscript{-1} and 25.8~A. We find that three 400 and
275~kV substations are the most likely locations for the Irish transformers to

Radial Velocity Studies of Close Binary Stars. XI
Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital radial
velocity variations are presented for ten close binary systems: DU Boo, ET Boo,
TX Cnc, V1073 Cyg, HL Dra, AK Her, VW LMi, V566 Oph, TV UMi and AG Vir. By this
contribution, the DDO program has reached the point of 100 published radial
velocity orbits. The radial velocities have been determined using an improved
fitting technique which uses rotational profiles to approximate individual
peaks in broadening functions.
Three systems, ET Boo, VW LMi and TV UMi, were found to be quadruple while AG
Vir appears to be a spectroscopic triple. ET Boo, a member of a close visual
binary with years, was previously known to be a multiple
system, but we show that the second component is actually a close,
non-eclipsing binary. The new observations enabled us to determine the
spectroscopic orbits of the companion, non-eclipsing pairs in ET Boo and VW
LMi. The particularly interesting case is VW LMi, where the period of the
mutual revolution of the two spectroscopic binaries is only 355 days.
While most of the studied eclipsing pairs are contact binaries, ET Boo is
composed of two double-lined detached binaries and HL Dra is single-lined
detached or semi-detached system. Five systems of this group were observed
spectroscopically before: TX Cnc, V1073 Cyg, AK Her (as a single-lined binary),
V566 Oph, AG Vir, but our new data are of much higher quality than the previous

A Two-Step K-Ar Experiment on Mars: Dating the Diagenetic Formation of Jarosite from Amazonian Groundwaters
Following K-Ar dating of a mudstone and a sandstone, a third sample has been dated by the Curiosity rover exploring Gale Crater. The Mojave 2 mudstone, which contains relatively abundant jarosite, yielded a young K-Ar bulk age of 2.57 ± 0.39 Ga (1σ precision). A two-step heating experiment was implemented in an effort to resolve the K-Ar ages of primary and secondary mineralogical components within the sample. This technique involves measurement of 40Ar released in low-temperature (500°C) and high-temperature (930°C) steps, and a model of the potassium distribution within the mineralogical components of the sample. Using this method, the high-temperature step yields a K-Ar model age of 4.07 ± 0.63 Ga associated with detrital plagioclase, compatible with the age obtained on the Cumberland mudstone by Curiosity. The low-temperature step, associated with jarosite mixed with K-bearing evaporites and/or phyllosilicates, gave a youthful K-Ar model age of 2.12 ± 0.36 Ga. The interpretation of this result is complicated by the potential for argon loss after mineral formation. Comparison with the results on Cumberland and previously published constraints on argon retentivity of the individual phases likely to be present suggests that the formation age of the secondary materials, correcting for plausible extents of argon loss, is still less than 3 Ga, suggesting post-3 Ga aqueous processes occurred in the sediments in Gale Crater. Such a result is inconsistent with K-bearing mineral formation in Gale Lake and instead suggests postdepositional fluid flow at a time after surface fluvial activity on Mars is thought to have largely ceased
International lease accounting reform and economic consequences: the views of UK users and preparers
In response to perceived difficulties with extant lease-accounting standards in operation worldwide, the G4+1 issued a discussion paper which proposes that all leases should be recognized on the balance sheet [ASB (1999). Leases: Implementation of a new approach, discussion paper. London: Accounting Standards Board]. Leasing is now on the active agenda of the IASB. A major difficulty faced by standard setters lies in overcoming the preparer/user lobbying imbalance and obtaining ex ante evidence on the likely impact of regulatory reform. This paper contributes to the ongoing international debate by conducting a questionnaire survey of U.K. users and preparers to assess their views on proposals for lease-accounting reform and on the potential economic consequences of their adoption. The results, based on 132 responses, indicate that both groups accept that there are deficiencies in the current rules, but they do not agree on the way forward and believe that the proposals would lead to significant economic consequences for key parties.
