The effects of socioeconomic and cultural characteristics of regions on the spatial patterns of the Second Demographic Transition in Finland
The article studies to what extent regional socioeconomic and cultural characteristics explain spatial patterns in the Second Demographic Transition in Finland. The country’s 75 functional regions are used as area units. A summary indicator of the transition based on divorce and cohabitation is used as the dependent variable. The results show that the spatial pattern is mainly determined according to the regional level of urbanization, but the effect is mediated by cultural characteristics (secularization and support for the socialist and green parties). Light-ion production in the interaction of 96 MeV neutrons with oxygen
Double-differential cross sections for light-ion (p, d, t, He-3 and alpha)
production in oxygen, induced by 96 MeV neutrons are reported. Energy spectra
are measured at eight laboratory angles from 20 degrees to 160 degrees in steps
of 20 degrees. Procedures for data taking and data reduction are presented.
Deduced energy-differential and production cross sections are reported.
Experimental cross sections are compared to theoretical reaction model
calculations and experimental data at lower neutron energies in the literature.
The measured proton data agree reasonably well with the results of the model
calculations, whereas the agreement for the other particles is less convincing.
The measured production cross sections for protons, deuterons, tritons and
alpha particles support the trends suggested by data at lower energies.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Patient injuries in operative rhinology during a ten-year period : Review of national patient insurance charts
Objectives: To assess factors contributing to patient injuries in operative rhinology. Design: Data of the accepted patient injury claims involving operative rhinology, between the years 2001 and 2011, were obtained from the Finnish Patient Insurance Centre registry. Two senior otolaryngologists analysed and evaluated the injury mechanisms. Main outcome measures: Analysis and classification of factors contributing to patient injuries. Results: During the ten-year study period, there were 67 patient injuries in operative rhinology, comprising 36% of all patient injuries in otorhinolaryngologic surgery. The majority (78%) of patients were treated in university or central hospitals and almost all (90%) by fully trained otolaryngology specialists. The factors contributing to the injuries were errors in surgical technique, like lesions to the orbit, skull base and meninges, and adjacent nerves, as well as mistakes with removable packings left in situ. Nearly half of the patients had undergone endoscopic sinus surgery. One patient died because of bleeding from the intracranial artery. Fourteen patients (21%) needed a re-operation due to the injury. Conclusions: Patient injuries in rhinology were caused by typical complications of common operations performed by otorhinolaryngology specialists. The increased volume of endoscopic sinus surgery was evident also in patient injuries.Peer reviewe

Design and development of a low temperature, inductance based high frequency ac susceptometer
We report on the development of an induction based low temperature high
frequency ac susceptometer capable of measuring at frequencies up to 3.5 MHz
and at temperatures between 2 K and 300 K. Careful balancing of the detection
coils and calibration have allowed a sample magnetic moment resolution of
at 1 MHz. We will discuss the design and
characterization of the susceptometer, and explain the calibration process. We
also include some example measurements on the spin ice material CdErS
and iron oxide based nanoparticles to illustrate functionality
Measurement of the Absolute np Scattering Differential Cross Section at 194 MeV
We describe a double-scattering experiment with a novel tagged neutron beam
to measure differential cross sections for np back-scattering to better than 2%
absolute precision. The measurement focuses on angles and energies where the
cross section magnitude and angle-dependence constrain the charged pion-nucleon
coupling constant, but existing data show serious discrepancies among
themselves and with energy-dependent partial wave analyses (PWA). The present
results are in good accord with the PWA, but deviate systematically from other
