Intramolecular hydrogen transfer reactions catalyzed by pentamethylcyclopentadienyl rhodium and cobalt olefin complexes: Mechanistic studies

The mechanism of intramolecular transfer dehydrogenation catalyzed by [Cp * M(VTMS) 2 ] ( 1 , M=Rh, 2 , M=Co, Cp* = C 5 Me 5 , VTMS = vinyltrimethylsilane) complexes has been studied using vinyl silane protected alcohols as substrates. Deuterium-labeled substrates have been synthesized and the regioselectivity of H/D transfers investigated using 1 H and 2 H NMR spectroscopy. The labeling studies establish a regioselective pathway consisting of alkene directed α C-H activation, 2,1 alkene insertion, and finally β-hydride elimination to give silyl enol ether products

Personality assessment in the Great Apes: Comparing ecologically valid behavior measures, behavior ratings, and adjective ratings

Three methods of personality assessment (behavior measures, behavior ratings, adjective ratings) were compared in 20 zoo-housed Great Apes: bonobos (Pan paniscus), chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus), gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), and orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus abelii). To test a new bottom-up approach, the studied trait constructs were systematically generated from the species’ behavioral repertoires. The assessments were reliable, temporally stable, and showed substantial cross-method coherence. In most traits, behavior ratings mediated the relations between adjective ratings and behavior measures. Results suggest that high predictability of manifest behavior is best achieved by behavior ratings, not by adjectives. Empirical evidence for trait constructs beyond current personality models points to the necessity of broad and systematic approaches for valid inferences on a species’ personality structure

Activation of sp 3 C−H Bonds with Cobalt(I): Catalytic Synthesis of Enamines

C-H bond activation has been extensively studied with (Cp*)M(L)n (M = Ir, Rh), but cobalt, the third member of this triad, has not previously been shown to activate sp3 C-H bonds. Further, practical functionalization of the metal alkyl products of oxidative addition has not been fully explored. Toward these ends, we have developed catalytic dehydrogenation of alkyl amines with a Co(I) catalyst. Amine substrates are protected with vinyl silanes, followed by catalytic transfer hydrogenation, to yield a broad range of stable protected enamines and 1,2-diheteroatom-substituted alkenes, including several unprecedented heterocycles. (Cp*)Co(VTMS)2 catalyzes transfer hydrogenation under surprisingly mild conditions with high chemo-, regio-, and diastereoselectivity, while tolerating additional functionality

Personality of wild male crested macaques (Macaca nigra).

Animal personalities, i.e. consistent differences in behavior across time and/or context, have received increased attention of behavioral biologists over the last years. Recent research shows that personalities represent traits on which natural and sexual selection work and which can have substantial fitness consequences. The aim of this study is to establish the personality structure of crested macaque (Macaca nigra) males as foundation for future studies on its adaptive value. We collected behavioral data through focal animal sampling and additionally conducted two sets of playback experiments. Results of a factor analysis on the behavioral data revealed a four factor structure with components we labeled Anxiety, Sociability, Connectedness and Aggressiveness. Results from the experiments revealed an additional and independent Boldness factor but the absence of Neophilia. Overall, this structure resembles other macaque and animal species with the exception of Connectedness, which might be a consequence of the species' tolerant social style. Our results thus not only form the basis for future studies on the adaptive value of personality in crested macaques but also contribute an important data point for investigating the evolution of personality structure from a comparative perspective by refining, for example, which personality factors characterized the last common ancestor of hominids and macaques

Internet Daters’ Body Type Preferences: Race–Ethnic and Gender Differences

Employing a United States sample of 5,810 Yahoo heterosexual internet dating profiles, this study finds race–ethnicity and gender influence body type preferences for dates, with men and whites significantly more likely than women and non-whites to have such preferences. White males are more likely than non-white men to prefer to date thin and toned women, while African-American and Latino men are significantly more likely than white men to prefer female dates with thick or large bodies. Compatible with previous research showing non-whites have greater body satisfaction and are less influenced by mainstream media than whites, our findings suggest Latinos and African Americans negotiate dominant white idealizations of thin female bodies with their own cultures’ greater acceptance of larger body types
