    European freight transport and the environment. Empirical applications and scenarios

    Environmental issues have received a prominent place in transport policies of most European countries. The coordination of such policies however, is fraught with many difficulties. The increasing freight flows after the European integration are a source of concern, but have not yet led to straightforward and effective environmental strategies. The paper focuses on the Trans Alpine freight transport systems in the light of the future integration of single national transport systems into the European transport network. The environmental, social and institutional peculiarities of this ‘region’ have favoured—in the past—the development of strong nationally-oriented policies, partly in contrast with the goals promoted by the European Union. The present analysis aims to highlight opportunities, and limits inherent, in the implementation of various infrastructure projects oriented towards a drastic change of the Alpine transport systems structure. The Alpine countries, viz. Austria and Switzerland, play a central role in the promotion of environmental benign modes of transport of goods, with a clear focus on rail. The route choice and modal split of freight flows in Europe are taking place simultaneously. In this paper the results of European freight flow models (based on logit analysis and neural networks) will be presented. An important exercise is then to assess the consequences of various types of eco-taxes on road transport in Europe. In this context, several policy scenarios will be dealt with

    From h to p efficiently: optimal implementation strategies for explicit time-dependent problems using the spectral/hp element method

    We investigate the relative performance of a second-order Adams–Bashforth scheme and second-order and fourth-order Runge–Kutta schemes when time stepping a 2D linear advection problem discretised using a spectral/hp element technique for a range of different mesh sizes and polynomial orders. Numerical experiments explore the effects of short (two wavelengths) and long (32 wavelengths) time integration for sets of uniform and non-uniform meshes. The choice of time-integration scheme and discretisation together fixes a CFL limit that imposes a restriction on the maximum time step, which can be taken to ensure numerical stability. The number of steps, together with the order of the scheme, affects not only the runtime but also the accuracy of the solution. Through numerical experiments, we systematically highlight the relative effects of spatial resolution and choice of time integration on performance and provide general guidelines on how best to achieve the minimal execution time in order to obtain a prescribed solution accuracy. The significant role played by higher polynomial orders in reducing CPU time while preserving accuracy becomes more evident, especially for uniform meshes, compared with what has been typically considered when studying this type of problem.© 2014.     Transumbilical versus transvaginal retrieval of surgical specimens at laparoscopy: a randomized trial.

    Objective We sought to compare transumbilical (TU) and transvaginal (TV) route for retrieval of surgical specimens at laparoscopy. Study design Women scheduled for a laparoscopic resection of an adnexal mass were randomized to have their surgical specimen removed either through a posterior colpotomy (n = 34) or the umbilical port site (n = 32). Group allocation was concealed from patients and bedside clinicians. The primary outcome was postoperative incisional pain assessed by a 10-cm visual analog scale at 1, 3, and 24 hours after surgery. Results TV retrieval caused less postoperative pain than TU specimen extraction at each time point (visual analog scale score at 1 hour: 2.6 \ub1 2.9 vs 1.2 \ub1 2.0, P = .03; at 3 hours: 2.4 \ub1 2.0 vs 1.4 \ub1 2.0, P = .02; and at 24 hours: 1.1 \ub1 1.5 vs 0.5 \ub1 1.4, P = .02). A higher proportion of women in the TU group than in the TV group indicated the umbilicus as the most painful area at 1 and 3 hours postoperatively. Two months after surgery, the participants scored similarly as to their overall satisfaction, cosmetic outcome, and dyspareunia upon resumption of intercourse.     Polynomial ergodicity and asymptotic behaviour of unbounded solutions of abstract evolution equations

    In this paper we develop the notion of ergodicity to include functions dominated by a weight ww. Such functions have polynomial means and include, amongst many others, the ww-almost periodic functions. This enables us to describe the asymptotic behaviour of unbounded solutions of linear evolution, recurrence and convolution equations. To unify the treatment and allow for further applications, we consider solutions ϕ:GX\phi : G\rightarrow X of generalized evolution equations of the form ()(Bϕ)(t)=Aϕ(t)+ψ(t) (*) (B\phi)(t)=A\phi (t)+\psi (t) for tGt\in G where GG\ is a locally compact abelian group with a closed subsemigroup JJ, AA is a closed linear operator on a Banach space XX, ψ:GX\psi :G\rightarrow X is continuous and BB is a linear operator with characteristic function θB:G^C\theta_{B}:\hat{G}\rightarrow \mathbf{C}. We introduce the resonance set θB1(σ(A))\theta_{B}^{-1}(\sigma (A)) which contains the Beurling spectra of all solutions of the homogeneous equation Bϕ=AϕB\phi =A\circ \phi. For certain classes {\F} of functions from JJ to % X, the spectrum sp_{{\F}}(\phi) of ϕ\phi relative to % {\F} is used to determine membership of {\F}. Our main result gives general conditions under which sp_{{\F}}(\phi)\ is a subset of the resonance set. As a simple consequence we obtain conditions under which \psi |_{J}\in \F implies \phi |_{J}\in {\F}. An important tool is our generalization to unbounded functions of a theorem of Loomis. As applications we obtain generalizations or new proofs of many known results, including theorems of Gelfand, Hille, Katznelson-Tzafriri, Esterle et al., Ph\'{o}ng, Ruess and Arendt-Batty.Comment: 42 page

    Time evolution and asymmetry of a laser produced blast wave

    Studies of a blast wave produced from carbon rods and plastic spheres in an argon background gas have been conducted using the Vulcan laser at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. A laser of 1500 J was focused onto these targets, and rear-side observations of an emission front were recorded using a fast-framing camera. The emission front is asymmetrical in shape and tends to a more symmetrical shape as it progresses due to the production of a second shock wave later in time, which pushes out the front of the blast wave. Plastic spheres produce faster blast waves, and the breakthrough of the second shock is visible before the shock stalls. The results are presented to demonstrate this trend, and similar evolution dynamics of experimental and simulation data from the FLASH radiation-hydrodynamics code are observed

    Hydrophobic and ionic-interactions in bulk and confined water with implications for collapse and folding of proteins

    Water and water-mediated interactions determine thermodynamic and kinetics of protein folding, protein aggregation and self-assembly in confined spaces. To obtain insights into the role of water in the context of folding problems, we describe computer simulations of a few related model systems. The dynamics of collapse of eicosane shows that upon expulsion of water the linear hydrocarbon chain adopts an ordered helical hairpin structure with 1.5 turns. The structure of dimer of eicosane molecules has two well ordered helical hairpins that are stacked perpendicular to each other. As a prelude to studying folding in confined spaces we used simulations to understand changes in hydrophobic and ionic interactions in nano droplets. Solvation of hydrophobic and charged species change drastically in nano water droplets. Hydrophobic species are localized at the boundary. The tendency of ions to be at the boundary where water density is low increases as the charge density decreases. Interaction between hydrophobic, polar, and charged residue are also profoundly altered in confined spaces. Using the results of computer simulations and accounting for loss of chain entropy upon confinement we argue and then demonstrate, using simulations in explicit water, that ordered states of generic amphiphilic peptide sequences should be stabilized in cylindrical nanopores

    Doxorubicin versus doxorubicin and cisplatin in endometrial carcinoma: definitive results of a randomised study (55872) by the EORTC Gynaecological Cancer Group

    Background: Combination chemotherapy yields better response rates which do not always lead to a survival advantage. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the reported differences in the efficacy and toxicity of monotherapy with doxorubicin (DOX) versus combination therapy with cisplatin (CDDP) in endometrial adenocarcinoma lead to significant advantage in favour of the combination. Patients and methods: Eligible patients had histologically-proven advanced and/or recurrent endometrial adenocarcinoma and were chemo-naïve. Treatment consisted of either DOX 60 mg/m2 alone or CDDP 50 mg/m2 added to DOX 60 mg/m2, every 4 weeks. Results: A total of 177 patients were entered and median follow-up is 7.1 years. The combination DOX-CDDP was more toxic than DOX alone. Haematological toxicity consisted mainly of white blood cell toxicity grade 3 and 4 (55% versus 30%). Non-haematological toxicity consisted mainly of grade 3 and 4 alopecia (72% versus 65%) and nausea/vomiting (36 % versus 12%). The combination DOX-CDDP provided a significantly higher response rate than single agent DOX (P <0.001). Thirty-nine patients (43%) responded on DOX-CDDP [13 complete responses (CRs) and 26 partial responses (PRs)], versus 15 patients (17%) on DOX alone (8 CR and 7 PR). The median overall survival (OS) was 9 months in the DOX-CDDP arm versus 7 months in the DOX alone arm (Wilcoxon P = 0.0654). Regression analysis showed that WHO performance status was statistically significant as a prognostic factor for survival, and stratifying for this factor, treatment effect reaches significance (hazard ratio = 1.46, 95% confidence interval 1.05-2.03, P = 0.024). Conclusions: In comparison to single agent DOX, the combination of DOX-CDDP results in higher but acceptable toxicity. The relapse-free and overall survival rates were, respectively, 81% and 88% after 3 and 74% and 84% after 5 years.
