Methane seepage in a Cretaceous greenhouse world recorded by an unusual carbonate deposit from the Tarfaya Basin, Morocco
During the Cretaceous major episodes of oceanic anoxic conditions triggered large scale deposition of marine black shales rich in organic carbon. Several oceanic anoxic events (OAEs) have been documented including the Cenomanian to Turonian OAE 2, which is among the best studied examples to date. This study reports on a large limestone body that occurs within a black shale succession exposed in a coastal section of the Tarfaya Basin, Morocco. The black shales were deposited in the aftermath of OAE 2 in a shallow continental sea. To decipher the mode and causes of carbonate formation in black shales, a combination of element geochemistry, palaeontology, thin section petrography, carbon and oxygen stable isotope geochemistry and lipid biomarkers are used. The ¹³C-depleted biphytanic diacids reveal that the carbonate deposit resulted, at least in part, from microbially-mediated anaerobic oxidation of methane in the shallow subseafloor at a hydrocarbon seep. The lowest obtained δ¹³Ccarbonate values of −23.5‰ are not low enough to exclude other carbon sources than methane apart from admixed marine carbonate, indicating a potential contribution from in situ remineralization of organic matter contained in the black shales. Nannofossil and trace metal inventories of the black shales and the macrofaunal assemblage of the carbonate body reveal that environmental conditions became less reducing during the deposition of the background shales that enclose the carbonate body, but the palaeoenvironment was overall mostly characterized by high productivity and episodically euxinic bottom waters. This study reconstructs the evolution of a hydrocarbon seep that was situated within a shallow continental sea in the aftermath of OAE 2, and sheds light on how these environmental factors influenced carbonate formation and the ecology at the seep site
SeaConditions: a web and mobile service for safer professional and recreational activities in the Mediterranean Sea
Abstract. Reliable and timely information on the environmental conditions at sea is key to the safety of professional and recreational users as well as to the optimal execution of their activities. The possibility of users obtaining environmental information in due time and with adequate accuracy in the marine and coastal environment is defined as sea situational awareness (SSA). Without adequate information on the environmental meteorological and oceanographic conditions, users have a limited capacity to respond, which has led to loss of lives and to large environmental disasters with enormous consequent damage to the economy, society and ecosystems. Within the framework of the TESSA project, new SSA services for the Mediterranean Sea have been developed. In this paper we present SeaConditions, which is a web and mobile application for the provision of meteorological and oceanographic observation and forecasting products. Model forecasts and satellite products from operational services, such as ECMWF and CMEMS, can be visualized in SeaConditions. In addition, layers of information related to bathymetry, sea level and ocean-colour data (chl a and water transparency) are displayed. Ocean forecasts at high spatial resolutions are included in the version of SeaConditions presented here. SeaConditions provides a user-friendly experience with a fluid zoom capability, facilitating the appropriate display of data with different levels of detail. SeaConditions is a single point of access to interactive maps from different geophysical fields, providing high-quality information based on advanced oceanographic models. The SeaConditions services are available through both web and mobile applications. The web application is available at www.sea-conditions.com and is accessible and compatible with present-day browsers. Interoperability with GIS software is implemented. User feedback has been collected and taken into account in order to improve the service. The SeaConditions iOS and Android apps have been downloaded by more than 105 000 users to date (May 2016), and more than 100 000 users have visited the web version

The Paroniceratinae constitute a group widely recorded in the Tethys realm. However, they represent alone a small part, less than 1%, of the ammonoidea obtained in Toarcian sediments from the regions located at the east of the Iberian Plateau (Iberian Range). The values are yet smaller in the northern regions (Cantabrian Range) and in the west (Portugal), and show a sporadic presence in the Betics Ranges. In this study, the biostratigraphical distribution and the biochronostratigraphical position of the recorded species in the more representative expanded sections of Spain are checked and compared with those of other areas of the NW Europe bioprovinces and of the Tethys. The obtained specimens from Frechiella: F. subcarinata (Young and Bird), F. helenae Renz, F. venantii (Catullo), F. kammerkarensis (Stolley) and F. cf. octaviae Renz are described and figured, all of them proceeding from sediments of the Bifrons Zone in the Iberian Range, as well as those of Paroniceras: P. sternale (d’Orbigny) and P. helveticum Renz, and Oxyparoniceras: O. (O.) cf. telemachi (Renz), O. (O.) buckmani (Bonarelli), O. (N.) cf. undulosum (Monestier), O. (N.) cf. morbiense (Renz) and O. (N.) cf. brocardi Rulleau, Bécaud and Neige, proceeding from sediments of the interval between the Bifrons Zone (Semipolitum Subzone) and the Insigne Zone (Insigne Subzone), in the Iberian and Cantabrian Ranges. The Frechiella and Oxyparoniceras species are developed and recorded in the Iberian Plateau margins during the Bifrons Zone and the Insigne Zone, respectively, during the same intervals than the transgressive maxima of the LJ3 and LJ4 second order cycles recognized in all the studied area, while Paroniceras species make it during the Variabilis Zone, that concur with the final regressive stage of the LJ3 cycle
