The effect of structure on the solution times of minimum cost transportation and multi-echelon network flow problems
Researchers require benchmark test problems to evaluate
the speed of computer codes designed to solve minimum cost
network flow problems. To date, the only universally available
test problems developed for that purpose are randomly
generated. In practice, however, real-world network problems
solve faster than random network problems. This thesis
examines the effect on solution time resulting from applying
structure, produced through simulation of real-world phenomena,
to test networks. An efficient computer code, VSGEN, is
developed which generates structured transportation and multiechelon
networks. Various types of structure, including unit
flow cost, network topology and arc capacity, reduced the time
required to solve the test networks an average of 26%, when
using a primal network simplex solver, GNET.http://archive.org/details/effectofstructur00bonwLieutenant, United States NavyApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited
Joseph Goebbels: Expressionist Dramatist as Nazi Minister of Culture
The young Joseph Goebbels, caught up in the heady mix of ideas and ideals permeating German artistic circles during and after the First World War, expressed both his convictions and his confusions through writing plays. None of these deserve much attention as serious drama, but all shed light on the ideological development of the future Nazi Minister of Culture. While also developing an argument on the wide relationship between Expressionism and modernism, David Barrett here traces that relationship in Goebbels' plays, as also the evolution of an ideology that remained equivocal in its aesthetic--the necessary condemnation of 'degenerate' art tinged with a lingering admiration, epitomized in the infamous exhibition of 1937
The Significance of the Dog in Flaubert's Education Sentimentale
Every life is said to contain enough material to fill one novel; but Gustave Flaubert attempted three times to give some account of his adolescence; at the age of seventeen he finished Les Mémoires d'un Fou (1838), at twenty-one Novembre (1842), at twenty-four the first version of L'Education sentimentale. The first two novels he struck off rapidly; the last occupied him for two years.</jats:p
Factors influencing relocation to a retirement community
This study was designed to identify factors influencing relocation to retirement communities. Participants were residents of two New Jersey retirement communities which offered single family detached dwelling units with common grounds, community recreational facilities, and security guards. Residents paid monthly maintenance fees to cover operation of the common areas.
Total sample size was residents of 160 dwelling units. Specifically, respondents were from 40 units, or a 40 percent sample, in an Ocean County community and from 120 units, or a 10 percent sample, in a Burlington County community.
The researcher developed a test instrument designed to ascertain reasons for relocation. Data were collected October 11-17, 1976, by the researcher who contacted the subjects at their homes.
First, it was found that no significant differences existed between the samples and that only three items relating to influences upon mobility were significantly different between communities. These items were the large size of one's last dwelling unit, high property taxes on the last dwelling unit, and the value of one's new dwelling unit for the money. Second, no one factor precipitated relocation; rather, it was a combination of factors within the old and new near environments. Last, dwelling unit and neighborhood factors for the old and new near environments were influences, but community factors were only an influence as they relate to the new near environment.Master of Scienc
