Temporary work is one of the fastest growing branches in Germany. This development in a sustained manner influences the whole German labour market. The special organization of this sort of employment for various reasons makes it very attractive to employers and employees as well. Nevertheless, the reputation of this branch is rather poor. Temporary work is characterized as precarious and as an unsafe type of employment. Compared to regular employment, temporary work is often considered as a bridging function into regular employment. Based on the official statistics of temporary work released by the Federal Work Agency as well as on data from the German Socio-economic Panel (SOEP) for 2007, the paper presents the current situation and important characteristics of temporary work and performs an international comparison. The number of employees in temporary work agencies is still a marginal share of total employment. The future development of this branch depends on different factors leading to possible contradicting directions. One important aspect influencing temporary work in the future is the degree of flexibility of regular employment opportunities on the one hand and the possibilities of temporary work agencies to adapt to future working conditions on the other hand. Looking at other European countries, one can see that some degree of saturation in different temporary job opportunities has already been achieved, whereas new perspectives are opened for other jobs, either newly created or transformed from regular employment schemes.

Background: Investigations of antimicrobial use in companion animals are limited. With the growing recognition of the need for improved antimicrobial stewardship, there is urgent need for more detailed understanding of the patterns of antimicrobial use in this sector. Objectives: To investigate antimicrobial use for medical and surgical conditions in dogs and cats by Australian veterinarians. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed over 4 months in 2011. Respondents were asked about their choices of antimicrobials for empirical therapy of diseases in dogs and cats, duration of therapy, and selection based on culture and susceptibility testing, for common conditions framed as case scenarios: 11 medical, 2 surgical, and 8 dermatological. Results: A total of 892 of the 1,029 members of the Australian veterinary profession that completed the survey satisfied the selection criteria. Empirical antimicrobial therapy was more common for acute conditions (76%) than chronic conditions (24%). Overall, the most common antimicrobial classes were potentiated aminopenicillins (36%), fluoroquinolones (15%), first- and second-generation cephalosporins (14%), and tetracyclines (11%). Third-generation cephalosporins were more frequently used in cats (16%) compared to dogs (2%). Agreement with Australasian Infectious Disease Advisory Panel (AIDAP) guidelines (generated subsequently) was variable ranging from 0 to 69% between conditions. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Choice of antimicrobials by Australian veterinary practitioners was generally appropriate, with relatively low use of drugs of high importance, except for the empirical use of fluoroquinolones in dogs, particularly for otitis externa and 3rd-generation cephalosporins in cats. Future surveys will determine whether introduction of the 2013 AIDAP therapeutic guidelines has influenced prescribing habits.L.Y. Hardefeldt, S. Holloway, D.J. Trott, M. Shipstone, V.R. Barrs, R. Purpose: Since the introduction of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and the extension of life expectancy, HIV-infected persons have shown an increasing number of cardiovascular events. The reduction of cardiovascular risk factors becomes a new challenge in HIV care. One of the main objectives of the HIV&HEART study is to examine the development of cardiovascular risk factors and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Methods: This study is an on-going, prospective, regional multicentre trial that was conducted to analyse the frequency and clinical course of cardiac disorders as well as cardiovascular risk factors in HIV-infected patients. 505 HIV-infected outpatients were recruited at baseline (BL) and re-examined during 5-year follow up (5YFU). Results: 84% of 505 eligible HIV-infected patients were male. The average age was 44.3±9.5 years at BL. The proportion of ART-treated patients increased from 85.7% at BL to 96.4% at 5YFU. During the 5-year observation period mean cardiovascular risk detected by Framingham score increased from 6% at BL to 10% at 5YFU. Even after adjusting for age there was a difference in the Framingham score of 2%. Between BL and 5YFU systolic blood pressure increased from 128.4±19.8 mmHg to 138.3±19.9 mmHg in spite of an intensified use of antihypertensive drugs, from 11.9% at BL to 24.0% at 5YFU. The rate of participants with adiposity, characterised by a BMI>30, increased from 7.9% at BL to 11.2% at 5YFU. Lipid-lowering therapy was applied in 10.3% of the patients at BL and in 13.9% at 5YFU. Triglycerides (TAG)≥200 mg/dl reduced from 38.9% at BL to 36.8% at 5YFU; in contrast cholesterol values≥200 mg/dl elevated from 57.8% to 61.8%. The same trend was observed in HDL≤40 mg/dl. Here we found a change from 29.2% versus 31.3%. Doing regular sports elevated from 1.9% to 3.3%. The count of smokers increased for 2.8% and also mean pack-years changes from 24 to 26.5 pack-years. Conclusion: During a 5-year period the cardiovascular risk in Framingham score increased disproportionately high in this HIV-infected cohort even after adjusting for age. There was an increasing blood pressure although an elevated use of antihypertensive therapy. There was also a tendency of elevating BMI and an increasing trend in smoking behavior. As protective facts, we found a tendency in doing sports and a decreasing TAG value during intensifying lipid-lowering therapy. Cardiovascular risk was increasing, in spite of interventions
