Ground-based follow up of IRAS galaxies
Optical, near infrared, radio continuum and HI observations were undertaken of the galaxies identified with IRAS sources in a few fields roughly of the size of a sky survey plate. Results are presented from two fields at galactic latitude +27 and +43 deg over a total area of 100 sq. deg. These regions contained 115 IRAS point sources, out of which 26 were identified with stars and 81 with faint galaxies, 10 of which were difficult to recognize on the Schmidt plates. Spectroscopy was obtained with the ESO telescopes at a resolution of about 10 A. The vast majority of galaxies have low excitation spectra dominated by low ionization lines. The spectra are typical of HII region type galaxies, however of much lower excitation that other starbursts galaxies. The importance of the reddening as determined from the H alpha/H beta ratio is stressed: the visual absorption A sub v ranges from 2 to 6 magnitudes and as a consequence the corrected L sub IR/L sub B ratios are considerably reduced if those reddenings apply to the whole galaxy
Extragalactic OH megamasers in strong IRAS sources
From the OH and HI survey of the strongest far infrared IRAS sources, 3 new powerful OH megamasers were discovered in Arp 143, IRAS 1510+0724 and in the uncatalogued IRAS source, IRAS 17208-0014. The HI line, the OH 1667 and 1665 MHz main lines and the 21 cm continuum observations were made with Nancy radio telescope. The optical spectra and images were obtained at the European Southern Observatory. The spectra are displayed in figures together with the main IR and OH properties of the 8 megamasers detected up to now, including IC 4553, NGC 3690 and Mrk 231, Mrk 273 and III ZW35
EL PRODUCTO AUDIOVISUAL COMO HERRAMIENTA DE PROMOCIÓN DE SALUD. SABERES Y PRÁCTICAS DE USUARIOS Y EFECTORES DEL SISTEMA DE SALUD RESPECTO DEL ACCESO A LA ATENCIÓN EN SALUD DE LOS ADULTOS MAYORES
El proyecto, ganador de una de las becas “Estímulo a las Vocaciones Científicas” del Consejo Interuniversitario Nacional, propone explorar las potencialidades de la producción audiovisual como herramienta de promoción de salud articulando saberes de usuarios y efectores. Según estimaciones de la ONU, en nuestro país, se prevé un incremento del 13.4% al 23% de personas mayores de 60 años para los próximos 40 años. En este contexto constituye una preocupación regional el desarrollo de investigaciones que detecten necesidades de dicho sector poblacional, así como garantizar sus derechos y acceso a la atención. Las Nuevas Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación forman parte del diseño de programas de educación para la salud, aunque han sido escasamente exploradas sus potencialidades. Este trabajo propone un diseño que comprende: por un lado la producción de un audiovisual que promueva el reconocimiento de saberes y prácticas para una mejor atención en salud, sugeridos por profesionales de la salud, adultos mayores; y por otro indagar los cambios en la identificación de saberes y prácticas de AM antes-después de la visualización del mismo. Se espera que los resultados aporten a la exploración de las potencialidades de las producciones audiovisuales como herramienta de promoción de salud (medio) que propenda al mejoramiento del acceso a la salud en el área del AM
Planetary Nebulae as standard candles XI. Application to Spiral Galaxies
We report the results of an [O III] lambda 5007 survey for planetary nebulae
(PN) in three spiral galaxies: M101 (NGC 5457), M51 (NGC 5194/5195) and M96
(NGC 3368). By comparing on-band/off-band [O III] lambda 5007 images with
images taken in H-alpha and broadband R, we identify 65, 64 and 74 PN
candidates in each galaxy, respectively. From these data, an adopted M31
distance of 770 kpc, and the empirical planetary nebula luminosity function
(PNLF), we derive distances to M101, M51, and M96 of 7.7 +/- 0.5, 8.4 +/- 0.6,
and 9.6 +/- 0.6 Mpc. These observations demonstrate that the PNLF technique can
be successfully applied to late-type galaxies, and provide an important overlap
between the Population I and Population II distance scales. We also discuss
some special problems associated with using the PNLF in spiral galaxies,
including the effects of dust and the possible presence of [O III] bright

The LCO/Palomar 10,000 km/sec Cluster Survey. I. Properties of the Tully-Fisher Relation
The first results from a Tully-Fisher (TF) survey of cluster galaxies are
presented. The galaxies are drawn from fifteen Abell clusters that lie in the
redshift range 9000-12,000 km/sec and are distributed uniformly around the
celestial sky. The data set consists of R-band CCD photometry and long- slit
H-alpha spectroscopy. The rotation curves (RCs) are characterized by a turnover
radius (r_t) and an asymptotic velocity v_a, while the surface brightness
profiles are characterized in terms of an effective exponential surface
brightness I_e and a scale length r_e. The TF scatter is minimized when the
rotation velocity is measured at 2.0 +/- 0.2 r_e; a significantly larger
scatter results when the rotation velocity is measured at > 3 or < 1.5 scale
lengths. This effect demonstrates that RCs do not have a universal form, as has
been suggested by Persic, Salucci, and Stel. In contrast to previous studies, a
modest but statistically significant surface-brightness dependence of the TF
relation is found, log v = const + 0.28*log L + 0.14*log I_e. This indicates a
stronger parallel between the TF relation and the FP relations of elliptical
galaxies than has previously been recognized. Future papers in this series will
consider the implications of this cluster sample for deviations from Hubble

Distorted HI Gas in the Widely Separated LIRG Arp 256
We present new interferometric HI and CO (1-0) observations of the luminous
infrared source, Arp 256. Arp 256 consists of two spiral galaxies in an early
stage of merging, with a projected nuclear separation of 29 kpc (54") and an
infrared luminosity of 2.0E11 L_sun. Despite the large separation of the
galaxies' nuclei and mildly disrupted stellar components, the HI disks are
found to be strongly disrupted, and the southern galaxy in Arp 256 shows an
elevated star formation efficiency, which is consistent with a nuclear
starburst. Both of these results run contrary to expectations, posing
interesting questions on the physical mechanisms involved in stimulating star

Kinematics of the Local Universe XIII. 21-cm line measurements of 452 galaxies with the Nan\c{c}ay radiotelescope, JHK Tully-Fisher relation and preliminary maps of the peculiar velocity field
This paper presents 452 new 21-cm neutral hydrogen line measurements carried
out with the FORT receiver of the meridian transit Nan\c{c}ay radiotelescope
(NRT) in the period April 2003 -- March 2005. This observational programme is
part of a larger project aiming at collecting an exhaustive and
magnitude-complete HI extragalactic catalogue for Tully-Fisher applications
(the so-called KLUN project, for Kinematics of the Local Universe studies, end
in 2008). The whole on-line HI archive of the NRT contains today reduced
HI-profiles for ~4500 spiral galaxies of declination delta > -40°
(http://klun.obs-nancay.fr). As an example of application, we use direct
Tully-Fisher relation in three (JHK) bands in deriving distances to a large
catalog of 3126 spiral galaxies distributed through the whole sky and sampling
well the radial velocity range between 0 and 8000 km/s. Thanks to an iterative
method accounting for selection bias and smoothing effects, we show as a
preliminary output a detailed and original map of the velocity field in the
Local Universe
Distribution of dust clouds around the central engine of NGC 1068
We studied the distribution of dust clouds around the central engine of NGC
1068 based on shifted-and-added 8.8 - 12.3 micron (MIR) multi-filter images and
3.0 - 3.9 micron (L-band) spectra obtained with the Subaru Telescope. In a
region of 100 pc (1.4") around the central peak, we successfully constructed
maps of color temperatures and emissivities of the MIR and L-band continua as
well as the 9.7 micron and 3.4 micron dust features with spatial resolutions of
26 pc (0.37") in the MIR and 22 pc (0.3") in the L-band. Our main results are:
1) color temperature of the MIR continuum scatters around the thermal
equilibrium temperature with the central engine as the heat source while that
of the L-band continuum is higher and independent upon distance from the
central engine; 2) the peak of the 9.7 micron silicate absorption feature is
shifted to a longer wavelength at some locations; 3) the ratio of the optical
depths of the dust features is different from the Galactic values and show
complicated spatial distribution; and 4) there is a pie shaped warm dust cloud
as an enhancement in the emissivity of the MIR continuum extending about 50 pc
to the north from the central engine. We speculate that material falls into the
