Acetazolamide in the treatment of acute mania - A case report
Several antiepileptic drugs are also being used in affective disorders. There are some hints that also the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor acetazolamide might be useful in the treatment of bipolar affective disorder. We report a 39-year-old male patient with a history of bipolar affective disorder who presented with his second manic episode. Acetazolamide was added to a low dose of valproic acid and to perazine. A marked decrease of the BRMAS score was achieved. The implications of this case are discussed
Distribution functions for hard thermal particles in QCD
We find a closed-form for the distribution function (defined in terms of a
Wigner operator) for hot coloured particles in a background gluon field, in the
hard thermal loop approximation. We verify that the current is the same as that

Evidence for a parsec scale X-ray jet from the accreting neutron star Circinus X-1
We analyzed the zero-order image of a 50 ks Chandra gratings observation of
Circinus X-1, taken in 2005 during the source's low-flux state. Circinus X-1 is
an accreting neutron star that exhibits ultra-relativistic arcsecond-scale
radio jets and diffuse arcminute-scale radio jets and lobes. The image shows a
clear excess along the general direction of the north-western counter-jet,
coincident with the radio emission, suggesting that it originates either in the
jet itself or in the shock the jet is driving into its environment. This makes
Circinus X-1 the first neutron star for which an extended X-ray jet has been
detected. The kinetic jet power we infer is significantly larger than the
minimum power required for the jet to inflate the large scale radio nebula.Comment: Added journal reference, corrected on reference and typo in labels

transverse and longitudinal poles in the gluon propagator are unknown functions

The energy of the high-temperature quark-gluon plasma
For the quark-gluon plasma, an energy-momentum tensor is found corresponding
to the high-temperature Braaten-Pisarski effective action. The tensor is found
by considering the interaction of the plasma with a weak gravitational field
and the positivity of the energy is studied. In addition, the complete

Classical transport equation in non-commutative QED at high temperature
We show that the high temperature behavior of non-commutative QED may be
simply obtained from Boltzmann transport equations for classical particles. The
transport equation for the charge neutral particle is shown to be
characteristically different from that for the charged particle. These
equations correctly generate, for arbitrary values of the non-commutative
parameter theta, the leading, gauge independent hard thermal loops, arising
from the fermion and the gauge sectors. We briefly discuss the generating

Lord of the Rings: A Kinematic Distance to Circinus X-1 from a Giant X-Ray Light Echo
Circinus X-1 exhibited a bright X-ray flare in late 2013. Follow-up
observations with Chandra and XMM-Newton from 40 to 80 days after the flare
reveal a bright X-ray light echo in the form of four well-defined rings with
radii from 5 to 13 arcminutes, growing in radius with time. The large fluence
of the flare and the large column density of interstellar dust towards Circinus
X-1 make this the largest and brightest set of rings from an X-ray light echo
observed to date. By deconvolving the radial intensity profile of the echo with
the MAXI X-ray lightcurve of the flare we reconstruct the dust distribution
towards Circinus X-1 into four distinct dust concentrations. By comparing the
peak in scattering intensity with the peak intensity in CO maps of molecular
clouds from the Mopra Southern Galactic Plane CO Survey we identify the two
innermost rings with clouds at radial velocity ~ -74 km/s and ~ -81 km/s,
respectively. We identify a prominent band of foreground photoelectric
absorption with a lane of CO gas at ~ -32 km/s. From the association of the
rings with individual CO clouds we determine the kinematic distance to Circinus
X-1 to be kpc. This distance rules out
earlier claims of a distance around 4 kpc, implies that Circinus X-1 is a
frequent super-Eddington source, and places a lower limit of on the Lorentz factor and an upper limit of on the jet viewing angle.Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures, Astrophysical Journal, in prin
A remark on non-Abelian classical kinetic theory
It is known that non-Abelian classical kinetic theory reproduces the Hard
Thermal/Dense Loop (HTL/HDL) effective action of QCD, obtained after
integrating out the hardest momentum scales from the system, as well as the
first higher dimensional operator beyond the HTL/HDL level. We discuss here its
applicability at still higher orders, by comparing the exact classical
effective action obtained in the static limit, with the 1-loop quantum
effective potential. We remark that while correct types of operators arise, the
classical colour algebra reproduces correctly the prefactor of the 4-point
function only for matter in asymptotically high dimensional colour

Transport equation for the photon Wigner operator in non-commutative QED
We derive an exact quantum equation of motion for the photon Wigner operator
in non-commutative QED, which is gauge covariant. In the classical
approximation, this reduces to a simple transport equation which describes the
hard thermal effects in this theory. As an example of the effectiveness of this
method we show that, to leading order, this equation generates in a direct way
the Green amplitudes calculated perturbatively in quantum field theory at high
