Edge geometry superconducting tunnel junctions utilizing an NbN/MgO/NbN thin film structure
An edge defined geometry is used to produce very small area tunnel junctions in a structure with niobium nitride superconducting electrodes and a magnesium oxide tunnel barrier. The incorporation of an MgO tunnel barrier with two NbN electrodes results in improved current-voltage characteristics, and may lead to better junction noise characteristics. The NbN electrodes are preferably sputter-deposited, with the first NbN electrode deposited on an insulating substrate maintained at about 250 to 500 C for improved quality of the electrode
How square is the policy frontier ?
This paper assesses the implications of discounting on a result derived by Bean (1998): that in a model of monetary policy where policy acts with a lag, the outcomes of monetary policy are very similar for a wide range of weightings of the (non-discounting) monetary authority's objective function, with respect to inflation stability versus output stability. We show that when the authority discounts the future, outcomes become more sensitive to preferences, and that it is important to take the discount rate into account when examining the question of how the authority's remit should be specified.
Bargaining Models and Identifying the Wage Equation
It is commonly asserted that the standard wage equation derived from bargaining theory cannot be identified. Here, it is argued that the case for this alleged failure rests on an outmoded definition of identification. Newer concepts based on non-stationarities, cointegration and reduced rank are appropriate. An empirical example applying these concepts shows that the standard model can be derived and that far from being underidentified, it is actually overidentified.

Effect of Photobiomodulation on Vinblastine-Poisoned Murine HERS Cells
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of near-infrared (NIR) photobiomodulation on the proliferation and glutathione levels in murine Hertwig\u27s epithelial root sheath (HERS) cells after poisoning with vinblastine. Background: Photobiomodulation has been shown to improve wound healing in a number of animal models. There have been no studies on the effect of photobiomodulation on cancer-related chemotherapy injury to the cells that initiate tooth root growth. Materials and Methods: Control groups consisted of murine HERS cells without vinblastine (VB−) and cells with vinblastine at 10, 20, and 30 ng/mL (VB10, VB20, and VB30). Experimental groups consisted of these same groups with light therapy (VB-L, VB10L, VB20L, and VB30L). The cells were exposed to vinblastine for 1 h. Photobiomodulation consisted of a 75-cm2 gallium-aluminum-arsenide light-emitting diode (LED) array at an energy density of 12.8 J/cm2, delivered with 50 mW/cm2 power over 256 s. Results: Vinblastine alone significantly decreased HERS cell proliferation and glutathione levels at all concentrations (VB10 [−55%, p \u3c 1.0 × 10−8]; VB20 [−72%, p \u3c 1.0 × 10−9]; VB30 [−80%, p \u3c 1.0 × 10−10]; and VB10 [−36%, p \u3c 0.0001]; VB20 [−49%, p \u3c 1.0 × 10−6]; VB30 [−53%, p \u3c 1.0 × 10−7] respectively). Photobiomodulation significantly increased cell proliferation at all levels of vinblastine exposure (VB10L [+50%, p \u3c 0.0001]; VB20L [+45%, p \u3c 0.05]; VB30 [+39%, p \u3c 0.05]) but not of the control (+22%, p = 0.063). The photobiomodulation significantly increased glutathione production in all concentrations of vinblastine except 20 ng/mL (VB10L [+39%, p = 0.007]; VB20L [+19%, p = 0.087]; VB30 [+14%, p = 0.025]) and the control (+12%, p = 0.13). Conclusions: Photobiomodulation demonstrated an improvement in proliferation and glutathione levels in vinblastine-poisoned murine HERS cells
Fractional Integration and the Dynamics of UK Unemployment
This article is concerned with the dynamic behaviour of UK unemployment. However, instead of using traditional approaches based on I(0) stationary or I(1) (integrated and/or cointegrated) models, we use the fractional integration framework. In doing so, we allow for a more careful study of the low frequency dynamics underlying the series. The conclusions suggest that the UK unemployment may be explained in terms of lagged values of the real oil prices and the real interest rate, with the order of integration of unemployment ranging between 0.50 and 1. Thus, unemployment shows the characteristics of long memory but is mean reverting.
Detecting Invasive Insects with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
A key aspect to controlling and reducing the effects invasive insect species
have on agriculture is to obtain knowledge about the migration patterns of
these species. Current state-of-the-art methods of studying these migration
patterns involve a mark-release-recapture technique, in which insects are
released after being marked and researchers attempt to recapture them later.
However, this approach involves a human researcher manually searching for these
insects in large fields and results in very low recapture rates. In this paper,
we propose an automated system for detecting released insects using an unmanned
aerial vehicle. This system utilizes ultraviolet lighting technology, digital
cameras, and lightweight computer vision algorithms to more quickly and
accurately detect insects compared to the current state of the art. The
efficiency and accuracy that this system provides will allow for a more
comprehensive understanding of invasive insect species migration patterns. Our
experimental results demonstrate that our system can detect real target insects
