    Prototyping of the ILC Baseline Positron Target

    The ILC positron system uses novel helical undulators to create a powerful photon beam from the main electron beam. This beam is passed through a titanium target to convert it into electron-positron pairs. The target is constructed as a 1 m diameter wheel spinning at 2000 RPM to smear the 1 ms ILC pulse train over 10 cm. A pulsed flux concentrating magnet is used to increase the positron capture efficiency. It is cooled to liquid nitrogen temperatures to maximize the flatness of the magnetic field over the 1 ms ILC pulse train. The final version is available from Wiley via the DOI in this record.A BDD-BDD dual-plate microtrench electrode with 6μm inter-electrode spacing is investigated using generator-collector electrochemistry and shown to give microtrench depth-dependent sulfide detection down to the μM levels. The effect of the microtrench depth is compared for a "shallow" 44 μm and a "deep" 180μm microtrench and linked to the reduction of oxygen to hydrogen peroxide which interferes with sulfide redox cycling. With a deeper microtrench and a fixed collector potential at -1.4V vs. SCE, two distinct redox cycling potential domains are observed at 0.0V vs. SCE (2-electron) and at 1.1V vs. SCE (6-electron).F. M. and A. J. G. thank EPSRC for financial support (EP/I028706/1)

    Micro-fabrication of Carbon Structures by Pattern Miniaturization in Resorcinol-Formaldehyde Gel

    A simple and novel method to fabricate and miniaturize surface and sub-surface micro-structures and micro-patterns in glassy carbon is proposed and demonstrated. An aqueous resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) sol is employed for micro-molding of the master-pattern to be replicated, followed by controlled drying and pyrolysis of the gel to reproduce an isotropically shrunk replica in carbon. The miniaturized version of the master-pattern thus replicated in carbon is about one order of magnitude smaller than original master by repeating three times the above cycle of molding and drying. The micro-fabrication method proposed will greatly enhance the toolbox for a facile fabrication of a variety of Carbon-MEMS and C-microfluidic devices.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure

    USING DATA FROM CLASSROOM EXPERIMENTS TO TEACH DEADWEIGHT LOSS

    This paper demonstrates a novel approach to teaching the concept of deadweight loss using a double oral auction experiment conducted in the classroom. After the experiment, students are given the associated data and are tasked with calculating both predicted and observed consumer and producer surplus transaction by transaction. They are then asked to differentiate between deadweight loss resulting from an inefficient allocation of production and consumption given the observed number of transactions and the deadweight loss resulting from an inefficient number of transactions. We find an improved understanding of these concepts from the participating class

    The Solitary Place Shall Be Glad for Them: Understanding and Treating Mormon Pioneer Gardens as Cultural Landscapes

    The gardens of early Mormon pioneers are a unique cultural resource in the western United States, but little guidance has been provided for understanding or providing landscape treatments for Mormon landscapes. Mormon pioneers came to Utah and the Great Basin to escape religious persecution and build their own holy kingdom. In relative geographical isolation, they built towns that have a distinctive character delineating a Mormon cultural region in the West. Self-sufficiency was an important feature of these towns and of the religious culture of early Mormons, both because of their geographical isolation and their desire to be independent of the world, which they viewed as wicked. This emphasis on self-sufficiency made gardens and gardening an important part of every household, encouraged by religious leaders and individual need. The cultural and personal preferences of individuals did influence the style and contents of Mormon pioneer gardens, but perhaps not to the extent that the religious culture of self-sufficiency did. When managing or treating Mormon pioneer landscapes or gardens, it is helpful to start by assessing any historic features that still exist. Then, the property owner or manager can choose one of the standard landscape treatments of preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, or reconstruction, or opt for some combination of these treatments. Because Mormon pioneers brought plants from all over the world, a large selection of heirloom plants may be suitable for historic Mormon landscapes. A few historic plants are no longer appropriate in Western landscapes because of ecological concerns such as invasiveness or water efficiency, but substitutions for these plants can be found by considering the plant\u27s form, function, and meaning in the historic landscape
