    Nanodroplets Impacting on Graphene

The unique and remarkable properties of graphene can be exploited as the basis to a wide range of applications. However, in spite of years of investigations there are some important graphene properties that are not still fully understood, as for example, its wettability. There are controversial reported results whether graphene is really hydrophobic or hydrophilic. In order to address this problem we have carried out classical molecular dynamics simulations of water nanodroplets shot against graphene surface. Our results show that the contact angle values between the nanodroplets and graphene surfaces depend on the initial droplet velocity value and these angles can change from 86 degrees (hydrophobic) to 35 degrees (hydrophilic). Our preliminary results indicate that the graphene wettability can be dependent on spreading liquid dynamics and which can explain some of the apparent inconsistencies reported in the literature

Graphene-like Membranes: From Impermeable to Selective Sieves

Recently, it was proposed that graphene membranes could act as impermeable atomic structures to standard gases. For some other applications, a higher level of porosity is needed, and the so-called Porous Graphene (PG) and Biphenylene Carbon (BPC) membranes are good candidates to effectively work as selective sieves. In this work we have used classical molecular dynamics simulations to study the dynamics of membrane permeation of He and Ar atoms and possible selectivity effects. For the graphene membranes we did not observe any leakage through the membrane and/or membrane/substrate interface until a critical pressure limit, then a sudden membrane detachment occurs. PG and BPC membranes are not impermeable as graphene ones, but there are significant energy barriers to diffusion depending on the atom type. Our results show that this kind of porous membranes can be effectively used as selective sieves for pure and mixtures of gases.Comment: Materials Research Society Symposia Proceedings vol. 1658, mrsf13-1658-rr07-20 (2014

    Get PDF

The surface composition of large Kuiper belt object 2007 OR10

We present photometry and spectra of the large Kuiper belt object 2007 OR10. The data show significant near-infrared absorption features due to water ice. While most objects in the Kuiper belt with water ice absorption this prominent have the optically neutral colors of water ice, 2007 OR10 is among the reddest Kuiper belt objects known. One other large Kuiper belt object -- Quaoar -- has similar red coloring and water ice absorption, and it is hypothesized that the red coloration of this object is due to irradiation of the small amounts of methane able to be retained on Quaoar. 2007 OR10, though warmer than Quaoar, is in a similar volatile retention because it is sufficiently larger that its stronger gravity can still retain methane. We propose, therefore, that the red coloration on 2007 OR10 is also caused by the retention of small amounts of methane. Positive detection will require spectra of methane on 2007 OR10 will require spectra with higher signal-to-noise. Models for volatile retention on Kuiper belt objects appear to continue to do an excellent job reproducing all of the available observations

    Antimicrobial coatings for implant surfaces

    Get PDF
Body-foreign materials are used more and more frequently in our lives: joint implants (hips, knees, fingers, etc.), catheters, pacemakers, dental and aesthetic implants, etc. The increasing numbers of patients requiring such implants also raises the absolute numbers of implant-related infections. Thus, it is known that body-foreign materials are prone to bacterial adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation, either via bacterial debris on implant materials, infections during implantation or, later on, via haematogenous seeding. Biofilms, once formed, are impossible to treat with antibiotics, and the immune system response leads to implant loosening, requiring total replacement. The strategy is thus to prevent bacterial adhesion to implant materials' surfaces. Different strategies have been tested in this context and will be presented here, together with our own approach, using a combination of different anti-microbial compounds

    Get PDF
