Observation as a method to enhance collective efficacy: An integrative review
Objectives
This review provides an integrative argument for the use of observation as an intervention to manipulate individual collective efficacy beliefs in sports teams.
Design
An exploration of the conceptual and empirical evidence underpinning observation-based interventions for increasing collective efficacy.
Method
A presentation of reflections on the following. First, we reflect on existing techniques used to increase self- and collective efficacy beliefs. Second, we consider collective efficacy in the context of observational learning and the various modeling techniques employed in the sports and motor performance literature. Third, we highlight relevant literature from neuroscience, outlining the analogous neural pathways evident for social cognition (i.e., collective efficacy) and observation.
Results
This review presents a case for the use of observation interventions to manipulate collective efficacy, drawing upon social psychological frameworks of human behavior, the observation-based literature, and contemporary understanding of brain and behavior.
Conclusions
Observation-based interventions are suited for collective efficacy manipulation in sport. There is a need to advance understanding of this relationship in order to maximize improvements in collective efficacy across group contexts
Algebraic-eikonal approach to medium energy proton scattering from odd-mass nuclei
We extend the algebraic-eikonal approach to medium energy proton scattering
from odd-mass nuclei by combining the eikonal approximation for the scattering
with a description of odd-mass nuclei in terms of the interacting boson-fermion
model. We derive closed expressions for the transition matrix elements for one
of the dynamical symmetries and discuss the interplay between collective and
single-particle degrees of freedom in an application to elastic and inelastic

The Consumer Price Index ( CPI) is now used increasingly as the
major reference point in adjusting pay and social benefits to "compensate"
for inflation. This raises many interesting questions about the precise
meaning of compensation, its feasibility and its effects as well as the
suitability of the CPI for the purpose. This paper, which is part of work
in progress on these issues, examines how price changes affect different
types of household by virtue of differences in their expenditure patterns
Giving hope, ticking boxes or securing services? A qualitative study of respiratory physiotherapists' views on goal-setting with people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
OBJECTIVE: To explore respiratory physiotherapists' views and experiences of using goal-setting with people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in rehabilitation settings. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 17 respiratory physiotherapists with ⩾12 months current or previous experience of working with patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in a non-acute setting. Participants were diverse in relation to age (25-49 years), sex (13 women), experience (Agenda for Change bands 6-8) and geographic location. METHOD: Data were collected via face-to-face qualitative in-depth interviews (40-70 minutes) using a semi-structured interview guide. Interview locations were selected by participants (included participants' homes, public places and University). Interviews followed an interview guide, were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. DATA ANALYSIS: Data were analysed using thematic analysis; constant comparison was made within and between accounts, and negative case analysis was used. RESULTS: Three themes emerged through the process of analysis: (1) 'Explaining goal-setting'; (2) 'Working with goals'; and (3) 'Influences on collaborative goal-setting'. Goal-setting practices among respiratory physiotherapists varied considerably. Collaborative goal-setting was described as challenging and was sometimes driven by service need rather than patient values. Lack of training in collaborative goal-setting at both undergraduate and postgraduate level was also seen as an issue. CONCLUSION: Respiratory physiotherapists reflected uncertainties around the use of goal-setting in their practice, and conflict between patients' goals and organisational demands. This work highlights a need for wider discussion to clarify the purpose and implementation of goal-setting in respiratory rehabilitation
Early reconstitution of effector memory CD4+ CMV-specific T cells protects against CMV reactivation following allogeneic SCT.
Reactivation of CMV is a common complication following allogeneic haematopoietic SCT and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The relative importance of the CD4+ and CD8+ components of the CMV-specific immune response in protection from reactivation is unclear. The CMV-specific CD4+ and CD8+ immune response was measured at serial time points in 32 patients following allogeneic HSCT. Intracellular cytokine staining following CMV lysate stimulation and HLA-peptide tetramers were used to determine CMV-specific CD4+ and CD8+ responses, respectively. A deficient CMV-specific CD4+ T-cell immune response within the first 30-50 days post transplant was associated with high risk of viral reactivation. Patients with combined impairment of the CD4+ and CD8+ immune response within the first 100 days were susceptible to late viral reactivation. The frequency of CMV-specific CD4+ T cells correlated with CMV-specific CD8+ T cells, comprising 10% of the whole T-cell repertoire. Early CMV-specific CD4+ T-cell reconstitution was dominated by effector memory cells with normal levels of IL-2 resuming 6 months following transplantation. In summary, both CD4 and CD8 CMV-specific immune reconstitution is required for protection from recurrent activation. Measurement of the magnitude of the CMV-specific CD4+ immune response is useful in managing viral reactivation following HSCT

Mitigation of Moral Hazard and Adverse Selection in Venture Capital Financing: The Influence of the Country’s Institutional Setting
A venture capitalist (VC) needs to trade off benefits and costs when attempting to mitigate agency problems in their investor-investee relationship. We argue that signals of ventures complement the VC’s capacity to screen and conduct a due diligence during the pre-investment phase, but its attractiveness may diminish in institutional settings supporting greater transparency. Similarly, whereas a VC may opt for contractual covenants to curb potential opportunism by ventures in the post-investment phase, this may only be effective in settings supportive of shareholder rights enforcement. Using an international sample of VC contracts, our study finds broad support for these conjectures. It delineates theoretical and practical implications for how investors can best deploy their capital in different institutional settings whilst nurturing their relationships with entrepreneurs
A mesocosm experiment investigating the effects of substratum quality and wave exposure on the survival of fish eggs
In a mesocosm experiment, the attachment of bream (Abramis brama) eggs to spawning substrata with and without periphytic biofilm coverage and their subsequent survival with and without low-intensity wave exposure were investigated. Egg attachment was reduced by 73% on spawning substrata with a natural periphytic biofilm, compared to clean substrata. Overall, this initial difference in egg numbers persisted until hatching. The difference in egg numbers was even increased in the wave treatment, while it was reduced in the no-wave control treatment. Exposure to a low-intensity wave regime affected egg development between the two biofilm treatments differently. Waves enhanced egg survival on substrata without a biofilm but reduced the survival of eggs on substrata with biofilm coverage. In the treatment combining biofilm-covered substrata and waves, no attached eggs survived until hatching. Links between traumatic brain injury and ballistic pressure waves originating in the thoracic cavity and extremities
Identifying patients at risk of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is important
because research suggests prophylactic treatments to reduce risk of long-term
sequelae. Blast pressure waves can cause TBI without penetrating wounds or
blunt force trauma. Similarly, bullet impacts distant from the brain can
produce pressure waves sufficient to cause mild to moderate TBI. The fluid
percussion model of TBI shows that pressure impulses of 15-30 psi cause mild to
moderate TBI in laboratory animals. In pigs and dogs, bullet impacts to the
thigh produce pressure waves in the brain of 18-45 psi and measurable injury to
neurons and neuroglia. Analyses of research in goats and epidemiological data
from shooting events involving humans show high correlations (r > 0.9) between
rapid incapacitation and pressure wave magnitude in the thoracic cavity. A case
study has documented epilepsy resulting from a pressure wave without the bullet
directly hitting the brain. Taken together, these results support the
hypothesis that bullet impacts distant from the brain produce pressure waves
that travel to the brain and can retain sufficient magnitude to induce brain
injury. The link to long-term sequelae could be investigated via
epidemiological studies of patients who were gunshot in the chest to determine
whether they experience elevated rates of epilepsy and other neurological
sequelae
