The Impact of Intervention Programs for Teenagers at Risk among Middle and High School Students in Southeast Missouri
At-risk students have been noted to be exposed to high cases of early school dropout, late graduation, poor academic performance, and engagement in risky behaviors, such as drug and substance abuse. While research has reported poor transition to future careers and adult life among at-risk students, little is known regarding intervention programs used in Missouri schools to motivate at-risk students. The objective of this study was to investigate intervention programs being used to retain and engage at-risk middle and high school teenagers in Missouri and identify effective intervention programs that might help promote their success in school and subsequent transition into adulthood. A mixed research design was used with relevant data collected using survey questionnaires, NWEA examination scores, and interviews. A battery of four validated survey questionnaires was used in this study. Results from surveys and findings from interview data showed that intervention programs positively influence the engagement of at-risk teenagers in school. School-based intervention programs facilitate cognitive engagement, effort, persistence, liking for school, love for learning, and engagement in extracurricular activities. Moreover, the use of intervention programs significantly increases the educational aspects of students concerning school through positive motivation to accomplish academic performance, know new concepts, and experience positive simulation. Teachers also use intervention programs to address motivation issues, such as self-doubt and negative perceptions about the need for creating positive perceptions about career prospects. Intervention programs help manage negative exposure to risk factors among at-risk students, such as bullying, fighting, and victimization. Findings also showed that intervention programs positively affect the normative motivation of at-risk students where teaching, coaching, sponsorship, and role modeling help students create a positive career path
Subversive Patriots
The Spanish Civil War was a conflict that exacerbated political tensions felt during the interwar period. Democratic powers were keen to avoid another global conflict and were quick to pledge neutrality in the fight between Spain’s Second Republic and Franco’s nationalist rebels. The United States was similarly eager to avoid another war, but also sought a neutral standing on the grounds that the Second Republic leaned left of American politics. It was in this context that American volunteers travelled to Spain to aid the Republican war effort. In their service and writings, these volunteers expressed their grievances against the politics of 1930s and 1940s America
Grade 11 & 12 students’ perceptions of parental involvement: Implications for student academic motivation
There are many variables that impact a student’s level of academic motivation. Understanding and enhancing student motivation is an important factor of academic success (Hoang, 2007). Currently, in North America, it is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve a high standard of living and receive quality employment without some level of post-secondary education (Anisef & Sweet, 2005).Therefore, how academically motivated a student is at the high school level may significantly impact their future employment and career options. For the purpose of the present study, parental involvement levels in both student academics and extracurricular were examined as possible variables impacting level of student academic motivation. 124 grade 11 and 12 public high school participants completed a series of questionnaires which were designed to measure level of parental involvement in academics, parental involvement in extracurricular, and level of student academic involvement. Categories of highly-involved, moderately-involved, and minimally-involved parenting were determined based on participant scores from the questionnaires. Analysis revealed that increased student academic motivation scores were significantly associated with increased levels of parental involvement. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis also revealed that parental academic motivation was a significant predictor of student academic motivation over and above what was accounted for by demographic information (i.e. time spent on homework, grade average, gender). Furthermore, extracurricular parental involvement was determined to be a significant predictor of student academic involvement over and above the variance accounted for by demographic information as well as parental academic involvement
Selective Resistive Sintering: A Novel Additive Manufacturing Process
Selective laser sintering (SLS) is one of the most popular 3D printing methods that uses a laser to pattern energy and selectively sinter powder particles to build 3D geometries. However, this printing method is plagued by slow printing speeds, high power consumption, difficulty to scale, and high overhead expense. In this research, a new 3D printing method is proposed to overcome these limitations of SLS. Instead of using a laser to pattern energy, this new method, termed selective resistive sintering (SRS), uses an array of microheaters to pattern heat for selectively sintering materials. Using microheaters offers significant power savings, significantly reduced overhead cost, and increased printing speed scalability. The objective of this thesis is to obtain a proof of concept of this new method. To achieve this objective, we first designed a microheater to operate at temperatures of 600⁰C, with a thermal response time of ~1 ms, and even heat distribution. A packaging device with electrical interconnects was also designed, fabricated, and assembled with necessary electrical components. Finally, a z-stage was designed to control the airgap between the printhead and the powder particles. The whole system was tested using two different scenarios. Simulations were also conducted to determine the feasibility of the printing method. We were able to successfully operate the fabricated microheater array at a power consumption of 1.1W providing significant power savings over lasers. Experimental proof of concept was unsuccessful due to the lack of precise control of the experimental conditions, but simulation results suggested that selectivity sintering nanoparticles with the microheater array was a viable process. Based on our current results that the microheater can be operated at ~1ms timescale to sinter powder particles, it is believed this new process can potentially be significantly quicker than selective laser sintering by increasing the number of microheater elements in the array. The low cost of a microheater array printhead will also make this new process affordable. This thesis presented a pioneering study on the feasibility of the proposed SRS process, which could potentially enable the development of a much more affordable and efficient alternative to SLS
Engaging Students and Alumni Through Executives in Residence
Over the course of 10 years, Residential Academic Initiatives at Purdue University has invited 57 prominent alumni to return to live on campus and engage in meaningful interactions with students as a part of its Executive in Residence program. In this session, the director of the program and a faculty member will share their experiences in launching and growing the program, identifying and recruiting alumni to participate, structuring their visits to maximize their impact on students, and collaborating with learning community faculty to integrate the alumni into teaching that results in purposeful and immersive learning opportunities for students. Specific examples will be shared with lessons that were learned and best practices that were developed
Implementing a Holistic Approach to Enhance Career Opportunities for Transition Students with Disabilities
Transition services are vitally important and an essential component of successful employment, career planning, self-determination, and independent living for students with disabilities. Public schools strive to meet the federal mandates placed upon them to help this group of students reach graduation and beyond. However, students with disabilities oftentimes fall short and do not succeed following high school. In an effort to change this trend, information pertaining to transition services and ways it can be enhanced are provided. This chapter addresses: the necessity of transition services and its relationship to federal legislation, barriers that inhibit students’ successful transition to adult life, and the current climate of the public educational system. A framework of recommendations is provided for educators assisting students with disabilities
