The April 2018 protests in Nicaragua inaugurated the Latin American protest wave that subsequently spread across the region in 2019. The protests and their governmental suppression ushered Nicaraguan politics into a regime crisis. Yet, despite international pressure, the harsh reality of a serious economic downturn, low and diminishing public support and the continued opposition resistance throughout 2019, the orteguista regime has proven to be remarkably resilient to change. In fact, it has tightened its grip on power and managed to deflect demands for change during negotiations with the opposition which eventually failed. Focusing on the main opposition and regime actors and strategies, the article argues that the neopatrimonial characteristics of the regime explain this surprising resilience.

Democracy and institutional change in times of crises in Latin America

Latin American democracies have gone through a series of perfect storms over the recent years. In what ways have these challenges transformed the institutional infrastructure of democracy? How have institutional reforms impacted the democratic prospects? This review article analyzes four recent edited volumes that approach the problems of institutional change against the backdrop of the multiple crises unfolding throughout the region. It describes two modes through which the reforms of political institutions have had an ambivalent or outright negative effect on the quality of democracy, and assesses the resilience of political institutions. Arguing for a more prominent role of informal institutions and political parties in institutional analyses, the article suggests that changes in formal political institutions have had a limited impact vis-à-vis the profound changes in political cleavages, culture wars, swift changes in religious identities and the decline of political parties

Disertační práce PhDr. Radek Buben Dekonsolidace demokracie ve Venezuele: rozklad stranického systému, neo-populismus a repolitizace ozbrojených sil Disertační práce Dekonsolidace demokracie ve Venezuele: rozklad stranického systému, neo- populismus a repolitizace ozbrojených sil se věnuje procesu dekonsolidace demokracie ve Venezuele v letech 1973-1993. Studie kombinuje teoretické a komparativní přístupy vycházející především z institucionální komparativní politologie (v případě analýzy systémových a institucionálních okolností analyzovaného procesu), historické sociologie a politické teorie (v případě studia fenoménu populismu a neo-populismu) a přístupy standardní historické analýzy politických procesů v konkrétním vymezeném období. Radek Buben Deconsolidation of Venezuelan Democracy: Erosion of the Party System, Neo-Populism, and Repoliticization of the Armed Forces The thesis Deconsolidation of Venezuelan Democracy: Erosion of the Party System, Neo- Populism, and Repoliticization of the Armed Forces addresses the process of deconsolidation of democracy in Venezuela between 1973 and 1993. The analysis is based on both theoretical and comparative approach embedded notably in institutional comparative political science (analysis of systemic and institutional conditions of the analyzed process), historical sociology and political theory (phenomena of populism and neo-populism) and approaches of traditional historical analysis of political process in a particular period of time. The theoretical part of the text is focused on the issue of democracy in Latin America in general. More concretely, it concerns with typologies of political regimes, institutionalization of party systems, civil-military relations and the so-called resources curse theory. The great deal of the text covers analysis of populism, its definition and the existing research of the phenomenon. The starting point of the empirical part presents the establishment of the petrostate and bipartism in 1973. The analysis ends with the decomposition of the...Středisko ibero-amerických studiíCentre for Ibero-American StudiesFilozofická fakultaFaculty of Art

Pojava sukoba u razredu nije ni neuobičajena niti neočekivana, a susreće ih se svakodnevno, u različitim situacijama i među različitim dobnim i spolnim skupinama. Emergence of conflicts within a classroom is neither unusual nor unexpected, and they can be encountered on a daily basis, in various situations and among different age and sex groups. This thesis provides an insight into the issue of conflict emergence among students attending lower grades of elementary school. The first section of the thesis presents theoretical knowledge of characteristics of conflict and possible means of resolving them, while the second part states and elaborates the results of an empirical research conducted among class teachers. The results of qualitative study conducted on the sample of 10 fourth grade elementary class teachers in Zagreb are presented within the empirical research. Teachers are interviewed about causes and types of conflicts, methods of resolving conflicts, students’ attempts to independently resolve their conflicts, teachers’ involvement as mediators, and documenting the appearance of conflicts
