Pathogenesis of sudden death following water immersion (immersion syndrome)
Sympathetic activity under cold stress is investigated. Predominantly vagal cardio-depressive reflexes are discussed besides currently known mechanisms of sudden death after water immersion. Pronounced circulatory centralization in diving animals as well as following exposure in cold water indicates additional sympathetic activity. In cold water baths of 15 C, measurements indicate an increase in plasma catecholamine levels by more than 300 percent. This may lead to cardiac arrhythmias by the following mechanisms: cold water essentially induces sinus bradycardia; brady-and tachycardiarrhythmias may supervene as secondary complications; sinusbradycardia may be enhanced by sympathetic hypertonus. Furthermore, ectopic dysrhythmias are liable to be induced by the strictly sympathetic innervation of the ventricle. Myocardial ischemia following a rise in peripheral blood pressure constitutes another arrhythmogenic factor. Some of these reactions are enhanced by alcohol intoxication
Simple method for the simulation of multiple elastic scattering of electrons
A screened Rutherford cross section is modified by means of a correction factor to obtain the proper transport cross section computed by partial¿wave analysis. The correction factor is tabulated for electron energies in the range 0¿100 keV and for elements in the range from Z=4 to 82. The modified screened Rutherford cross section is shown to be useful as an approximation for the simulation of plural and multiple scattering. Its performance and limitations are exemplified for electrons scattered in Al and Au

Las instituciones financiadoras y quienes encargan las revisiones podrían considerar la posibilidad de exigir la lista de verificación, a fin de facilitar la presentación de la información relevante del protocolo, para solicitar financiación. De forma similar, los revisores por pares y editores pueden utilizar las directrices para determinar la integridad y transparencia de un protocolo de revisión sistemática presentado a una revista u otro medio para su publicación.Systematic reviews should build on a protocol that describes the rationale, hypothesis, and planned methods of the review; few reviews report whether a protocol exists. Detailed, well-described protocols can facilitate the understanding and appraisal of the review methods, as well as the detection of modifications to methods and selective reporting in completed reviews. We describe the development of a reporting guideline, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses for Protocols 2015 (PRISMA-P 2015). PRISMA-P consists of a 17-item checklist intended to facilitate the preparation and reporting of a robust protocol for the systematic review. Funders and those commissioning reviews might consider mandating the use of the checklist to facilitate the submission of relevant protocol information in funding applications. Similarly, peer reviewers and editors can use the guidance to gauge the completeness and transparency of a systematic review protocol submitted for publication in a journal or other medium
A novel method for the isolation of subpopulations of rat adipose stem cells with different proliferation and osteogenic differentiation potentials
Bone marrow has been the elected cell source of studies published so far concerning bone and cartilage tissue-engineering approaches. Recent studies indicate that adipose tissue presents significant advantages over bone marrow as a cell source for tissue engineering. Most of these
studies report the use of adipose stem cells (ASCs) isolated by a method based on the enzymatic digestion of the adipose tissue and on the ability of stem cells to adhere to a cell culture plastic surface. Using this method, a heterogeneous population was obtained containing different cell types that have been shown to compromise the proliferation and differentiation potential of the
stem cells. This paper reports the development and optimization of a new isolation method that
enables purified cell populations to be obtained that exhibit higher osteogenic differentiation
and/or proliferation potential. This method is based on the use of immunomagnetic beads coated
with specific antibodies and it is compared with other methods described in the literature for
the selection of stem cell populations, e.g. methods based on a gradient solution and enzymatic
digestion. The results showed that the isolation method based on immunomagnetic beads allows
distinct subpopulations of rat ASCs to be isolated, showing different stem cells marker expressions
and different osteogenic differentiation potentials. Therefore, this method can be used to study
niches in ASC populations and/or also allow adipose tissue to be used as a stem cell source in a more efficient manner, increasing the potential of this cell source in future clinical applications.T. New Insights into Alleviating Diabetes Mellitus: Role of Gut Microbiota and a Nutrigenomic Approach
The scientific literature has shown that diet is able to modify the gut microbiota and contribute to obesity and diabetes development. This process—characterized by inflammation and gut barrier disruption—can affect the immune system and alter the adipogenesis and insulin resistance. This chapter describes the advances in nutrigenomics and Human Intestinal Microbiota (HIM) modification, and its relation with diabetes mellitus type two (DM2). In context where health and feeding are the main concerns of the human being, food innovation takes a special interest to people that look for a healthy diet or demand a functional aliments, such as nutraceutical. Some products derived from diet and interaction with HIM module the expression of many genes on the host, the so-called epigenome, with favorable effects. Novel functional fiber like low-glycemic oligosaccharides and sweeteners shows a potential prebiotic activity giving a new focus of nutritional guidelines for control and prevention of DM2. The use of prebiotics derived from functional fiber sources, such as fructo-oligosaccharides and beta-glucans as well as lignin and keffir, can contribute to the development of a healthy HIM by promoting the growth of specific bacteria, some of them associated with the prevention of obesity and diabetes
Investigación cualitativa en odontología, análisis narrativo de la evidencia existente
Qualitative research is a type of approach to reality comprehensively to local phenomena, quite nascent in the health area, and even more so in dentistry where their use is restricted to particular academic research.Objective: To evaluate the amount and content of research results in published qualitative dental from 2008 until 2013.Methods: A systematic search using search engines like Pubmed, Scielo, Blackwell sinergy, Lilacs. The search words are dentistry, oral health, oral diseasse, qualitative, qualitative method, and qualitative investigative. Data analysis is narrative in which we systematize the results of the selected articles.Results: 36 articles are qualitative in the last five years. There is a very basic use of qualitative research in dentistry, focusing on clinical and descriptive observational research, which implies the existence of an investigative niche not addressed and therefore not understood scientifically.Discussion: The qualitative evidence in dentistry is grouped in defined areas incorporating sociocultural variables collection techniques and interviews focused on traditional comparative analyzes.Introducción: la investigación cualitativa es un tipo de aproximación a la realidad de forma comprensiva para fenómenos locales, bastante incipiente en el área de salud y aún más en odontología donde su utilización se restringe a investigaciones académicas particulares.Objetivo: evaluar la cantidad y contenidos de los resultados de las investigaciones odontológicas cualitativas publicadas en revistas entre los años 2008 hasta el año 2013.Metodología: se utiliza una búsqueda sistemática en buscadores como Pubmed, Scielo, Blackwell sinergy, Lilacs. Las palabras de búsqueda son dentistry, oral health, oral diseasse, qualitative, method qualitative, investigative qualitative. El análisis de datos es narrativo en el cual se sistematizan los resultados de los artículos seleccionados.Resultados: se encuentran 36 artículos cualitativos en los últimos cinco años, existe una limitada utilización de la investigación cualitativa en odontología, centrándose en la clínica e investigaciones observacionales descriptivas, lo que implica la existencia de un nicho investigativo no abordado y por ende no comprendido científicamente.Conclusiones: la evidencia cualitativa en odontología se agrupa en áreas definidas incorporando variables socioculturales con técnicas de recolección centrado en entrevistas y análisis comparativos tradicionales
Recent advances in food allergy
Food allergy is a public health issue that has significantly increased worldwide in the past decade, affecting consumers’ quality of life and making increasing demands on health service resources. Despite recent advances in many areas of diagnosis and treatment, our general knowledge of the basic mechanisms of the disease remain limited i.e., not at pace with the exponential number of new cases and the explosion of new technologies. Many important key questions remain: What defines a major allergen? Why do some individuals develop food allergies and others do not? Which are the environmental factors? Could the environmental factors be monitored through epigenetics or modified by changes in the microbiome? Can tolerance to food be induced? Why are some foods more likely to trigger allergies than others? Does the route and timing of exposure have any role on sensitization? These and many other related questions remain unanswered. In this short review some of these topics are addressed in the light of recent advances in the area
