In spite of the wide scholarly consensus regarding the decisive turning point for the development of the arts in Spain marked by the advent of the Bourbon dynasty in 1700, there is still need to delve deeper into fundamental aspects such as the public character vested upon artworks, seen as tokens of the idea of progress. In this article we will pay attention to the pedagogic role assigned within the artistic ateliers, in line with the praxis of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, to casts and contemporary works of art, geared not only at would-be patrons or fellow artists but also at connoisseurs and dilettantes

Abstract: Regicide and parricide are deeply related topics in culture. The subject of the son that murders his own father to take power is persistent through History. The Ancient Near East gives us a few examples such as the deaths of Ramesses III and Sennacherib from which we exceptionally have some sources, and with them some historiographical problems to solve. PALABRAS CLAVE: Medio Oriente Antiguo, parricidio, regicidio, sucesión, historiografía. KEY WORDS: Ancient Near East, parricide, regicide, succession, historiograph

    The reviewing process: validating results

    Get PDF
Any scientific publication aims to advance the field of knowledge that it deals with, and therefore the editorial staff will always be seeking the most revolutionary papers among all of those received. On the other hand, the reviewers’ task is usually a much more conservative one, as reviewers are responsible for verifying the realism of the methods proposed and the veracity of the claimed results

Pancreatic Cancer in Lynch Syndrome Patients

    Get PDF
Although colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most common cancer type in Lynch syndrome (LS) families, patients have also increased lifetime risk of other types of tumors. The accumulated risk of pancreatic cancer (PC) in LS patients is around 3.7% and developed tumors often present a characteristically medullary appearance with prominent lymphocytic infiltration. LS patients are considered in high risk for PC development as they present 8.6-fold increase compared with the general population. Here we review PC cases reported in LS patients and current management guidelines. Literature data show that LS is clearly associated with PC and recent publications also demonstrated a connection with pancreatic neoplasic precursor lesions such as intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) in these patients. While screening techniques are well established for CRC detection, clear strategies are not yet uniform for PC. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or endoscopic ultrasound every 1-2 years in MMR mutation carriers with PC in a first or second-degree relative is recommended. Better pancreatic cancer detection strategies should be urgently defined due to the importance of early diagnosis in this disease

Treatment of a Complex Distal Triceps Tendon Rupture With a New Technique: A Case Report

    Get PDF
Introduction: The distal triceps tendon rupture is an uncommon injury. The acute treatment is well-defined, but when a delayed diagnosis is made or when a tendon retraction is present the alternatives or reconstruction are limited and sometimes complex. Case Presentation: In this case, we report on a 28-year-old man who presented with a chronic disruption of the distal triceps tendon with a gap of approximately 15 cm. The patient was diagnosed in another center with an inveterate breakage of the distal triceps tendon and was initially treated with an Achilles allograft that was complicated by a wound infection and required more than ten surgeries. Nearly 22 months after the initial trauma, and 12 months after the first surgery, we performed a reconstruction with an Achilles tendon allograft using the new technique of distal attachment. At the 12-month follow-up the patient presented a joint balance from -5º to 110º and presented with no pain. Conclusions: The use of an Achilles tendon allograft provides excellent results in complex distal triceps tendon ruptures. We report the use of a new technique to anchor a distal Achilles allograft

New control architecturebased on PXI for a 3-finger haptic device applied to virtual manipulation

    Get PDF
To perform advanced manipulation of remote environments such as grasping, more than one finger is required implying higher requirements for the control architecture. This paper presents the design and control of a modular 3-finger haptic device that can be used to interact with virtual scenarios or to teleoperate dexterous remote hands. In a modular haptic device, each module allows the interaction with a scenario by using a single finger; hence, multi-finger interaction can be achieved by adding more modules. Control requirements for a multifinger haptic device are analyzed and new hardware/software architecture for these kinds of devices is proposed. The software architecture described in this paper is distributed and the different modules communicate to allow the remote manipulation. Moreover, an application in which this haptic device is used to interact with a virtual scenario is shown
