This paper examines the extent to which people with disabilities are served through WIA's One-Stop system and discusses its capacity to serve people with disabilities who desire employment assistance, both in terms of common barriers to access as well as promising strategies to improve service delivery to people with disabilities

Comparisons of the execution times and memory requirements for high-speed discrete fourier transforms and fast fourier transforms, for the measurement of AC power harmonics

Conventional wisdom dictates that a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) will be a more computationally effective method for measuring multiple harmonics than a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) approach. However, in this paper it is shown that carefully coded discrete transforms which distribute their computational load over many frames can be made to produce results in shorter execution times than the FFT approach, even for large number of harmonic measurement frequencies. This is because the execution time of the presented DFT actually rises with N and not the classical N2 value, while the execution time of the FFT rises with Nlog2N

Wrong Tomorrow, Wrong Yesterday, but not Today: On Sliding into Evil with Zeal but without Understanding

Collaboration with systems of evil-the overall topic of this Symposium-is a problem as fresh as contemporary news accounts. The New York Times recently carried a front-page story about the dilemmas described by young Serbs who were evading military conscription because they understood the evil of Slobodan Milosevic\u27s genocidal policies against the Kosovar Albanians but nonetheless felt a patriotic duty to protect their country against foreign assaults. As one young man put it, \u27\u27\u27we\u27d like to see [Milosevic] hanging.\u27 But ... \u27[i]f the guys from NATO come here, we will shoot them.\u27 ! As wrenching as this kind of dilemma may be, it is not the problem of collaboration that I want to discuss. My concern is with a more difficult problem, as I see it-a problem that is more insidious and difficult to identify as such. The young Serbian resister knows that his President is an evil man, and he feels the moral conflict between his revulsion at this evil and his patriotic impulses. My concern is for circumstances where the evil is not understood as such by its perpetrators, where they are unaware at the time they are acting of the wrongfulness of the actions in which they are engaged

Moduli Spaces of Fivebranes on Elliptic Calabi-Yau Threefolds

    Get PDF
We present a general method for calculating the moduli spaces of fivebranes wrapped on holomorphic curves in elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds, in particular, in the context of heterotic M theory. The cases of fivebranes wrapped purely on a fiber curve, purely on a curve in the base and, generically, on a curve with components both in the fiber and the base are each discussed in detail. The number of irreducible components of the fivebrane and their properties, such as their intersections and phase transitions in moduli space, follow from the analysis. Even though generic curves have a large number of moduli, we show that there are isolated curves that have no moduli associated with the Calabi-Yau threefold. We present several explicit examples, including cases which correspond to potentially realistic three family models with grand unified gauge group SU(5).Comment: 56 pages, latex2e with amsmath and epsfig, 9 postscript figure

Soliton Solutions of M-theory on an Orbifold

    Get PDF
We explicitly construct soliton solutions in the low energy description of M-theory on S^1/Z_2. It is shown that the 11-dimensional membrane is a BPS solution of this theory if stretched between the Z_2 hyperplanes. A similar statement holds for the 11-dimensional 5--brane oriented parallel to the hyperplanes. The parallel membrane and the orthogonal 5-brane, though solutions, break all supersymmetries. Furthermore, we construct the analog of the gauge 5-brane with gauge instantons on the hyperplanes. This solution varies nontrivially along the orbifold direction due to the gauge anomalies located on the orbifold hyperplanes. Its zero mode part is identical to the weakly coupled 10-dimensional gauge 5-brane.Comment: 19 pages, 1 figure, Latex, uses epsf.st

Higher-Derivative Gravitation in Bosonic and Superstring Theories

    Get PDF
A discussion of the number of degrees of freedom, and their dynamical properties, in higher-derivative gravitational theories is presented. The complete non-linear sigma model for these degrees of freedom is exhibited using the method of auxiliary fields. As a by-product we present a consistent non-linear coupling of a spin-2 tensor to gravitation. It is shown that non-vanishing (Cμναβ)2(C_{\mu\nu\alpha\beta})^{2} terms arise in N=1N=1, D=4D=4 superstring Lagrangians due to one-loop radiative corrections with light field internal lines.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX2e and AMS-LaTeX 1.2, Talk presented at SUSY'95, Ecole Polytechnique in Palaiseau, Palaiseau, France, May 15-19, 199
