Local Revenue: Making a Difference in College Readiness

    Get PDF
This research project collects demographic, fiscal, and assessment data from Idaho school districts that have a high school and that report senior ACT scores. Analysis of the data indicates statewide correlations between local economic revenue indicators (local revenue per student, household median income, and percentage of local funding per student) and Idaho high school graduating seniors’ composite ACT scores. This research project indicates: (1) A strong relationship between Idaho school districts’ local revenues and their seniors composite ACT scores; (2) A strong relationship between Idaho high schools amount of local revenue per student and minimal ACT benchmarks not met by graduating seniors; and (3) A strong relationship between local revenues, ACT scores, and the percentage of college prep/advanced placement courses taught in Idaho high schools

Detailed and large-scale cost/benefit analyses of landslide prevention vs. post-event actions

The main aim of this paper is to test economic benefits of landslide prevention measures vs. post-event emergency actions. To this end, detailed- and large-scale analyses were performed in a training area located in the northeastern Italian pre-Alps that was hit by an exceptional rainfall event occurred in November 2010. On the detailed scale, a landslide reactivated after 2010 event was investigated. Numerical modeling demonstrated that remedial works carried out after the landslide – water-removal intervention such as a drainage trench – could have improved slope stability if applied before its occurrence. Then, a cost/benefit analysis was employed. It defined that prevention would have been economically convenient compared to a non-preventive and passive attitude, allowing a 30 % saving relative to total costs. On the large scale, one of the most affected areas after 2010 event was considered. A susceptibility analysis was performed using a simple probabilistic model, which allowed to highlight the main landslide conditioning factors and the most hazardous and vulnerable sectors. In particular, such low-cost analysis demonstrated that almost 50 % of landslides occurred after 2010 event could be foreseen and allowed to roughly quantify benefits from regional landslide prevention. However, a large-scale approach is insufficient to carry out a quantitative cost/benefit analysis, for which a detailed case-by-case risk assessment is needed. The here proposed approaches could be used as a means of preventive soil protection in not only the investigated case study but also all those hazardous areas where preventive measures are needed

LIDAR-Aided Inertial Navigation with Extended Kalman Filtering for Pinpoint Landing

In support of NASA s Autonomous Landing and Hazard Avoidance Technology (ALHAT) project, an extended Kalman filter routine has been developed for estimating the position, velocity, and attitude of a spacecraft during the landing phase of a planetary mission. The proposed filter combines measurements of acceleration and angular velocity from an inertial measurement unit (IMU) with range and Doppler velocity observations from an onboard light detection and ranging (LIDAR) system. These high-precision LIDAR measurements of distance to the ground and approach velocity will enable both robotic and manned vehicles to land safely and precisely at scientifically interesting sites. The filter has been extensively tested using a lunar landing simulation and shown to improve navigation over flat surfaces or rough terrain. Experimental results from a helicopter flight test performed at NASA Dryden in August 2008 demonstrate that LIDAR can be employed to significantly improve navigation based exclusively on IMU integration

High (but Not Low) Urinary Iodine Excretion Is Predicted by Iodine Excretion Levels from Five Years Ago

Background: It has not been investigated whether there are associations between urinary iodine (UI) excretion measurements some years apart, nor whether such an association remains after adjustment for nutritional habits. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relation between iodine-creatinine ratio (ICR) at two measuring points 5 years apart. Methods: Data from 2,659 individuals from the Study of Health in Pomerania were analyzed. Analysis of covariance and Poisson regressions were used to associate baseline with follow-up ICR. Results: Baseline ICR was associated with follow-up ICR. Particularly, baseline ICR >300 mu g/g was related to an ICR >300 mu g/g at follow-up (relative risk, RR: 2.20; p < 0.001). The association was stronger in males (RR: 2.64; p < 0.001) than in females (RR: 1.64; p = 0.007). In contrast, baseline ICR <100 mu g/g was only associated with an ICR <100 mu g/g at follow-up in males when considering unadjusted ICR. Conclusions: We detected only a weak correlation with respect to low ICR. Studies assessing iodine status in a population should take into account that an individual with a low UI excretion in one measurement is not necessarily permanently iodine deficient. On the other hand, current high ICR could have been predicted by high ICR 5 years ago. Copyright (C) 2011 S. Karger AG, Base

During rainy periods, landslides frequently hit the hilly region of the Vicenza province, involving weathered Tertiary Volcanic deposits and inducing damages to human activities. Our attention was focused on Marostica hills, that was one of the most affected area. In order to define the relationship between landslides and most important landslide conditioning factors a spatial analysis was performed. Then a geotechnical model derived from technical reports was implemented: physical parameters (particle size and Atterberg limits) of deposits involved in the mass movements were investigated to refine the model. Once established that the deposits have high and very similar strength parameters with almost the same physical characteristics, mineralogical analyses were performed in order to determine first of all which mineral phases were in the displaced materials then if they could provide further information concerning the causes inducing failures

Changes in the workplace, worker struggle and rootlessness: the re-structuring of production techniques in the day-to-day lives and representations of work of metalworkers in a company located in the ABC region of São Paulo

In this article, the different ways in which the re-structuring of production techniques are perceived by workers deeply affected by such transformations are described and analyzed. A case-study methodology of research and analysis was utilized. After preliminary visits to the target company, a field research diary was elaborated and 13 workers were interviewed. The subsequent analysis revealed that: 1) The re-structuring of production techniques is understood in different ways and provokes different feelings (relief, need for further elaboration, mistrust) in those interviewed; 2) Workers do, in fact, seem to place great value on some of the changes introduced into the workplace environment; 3) The reorganization of the factory environment, which is often accompanied by a seductive ideological discourse, disguises structural contradictions and renders the perception of worker insatisfaction difficult; 4) The so-called participative system seems to mask an internalized symbolic control, creating the illusion of a convergence between worker and company interests. The re-structuring of production techniques provokes a weakening of feelings of class solidarity and a blunting, in the workers, of the perception of community, which saps, in turn, the power of resistance and increases feelings of worker rootlessness; 5) Workers use different techniques of resistance, which in turn seem to be related to their diverse life histories - and especially to their ties to labor organizations
