Bringing Unions Back In: Labour and Left Governments in Latin America

    Get PDF
In the 2000s an unprecedented wave of left-party victories in presidential elections swept across Latin America. Although scholars have studied variation among left regimes and how these regimes differ from neoliberal-era predecessors, few have addressed the role of labour unions and labour policy under the Left. We argue that ‘bringing unions back in’ to the analysis of left governments’ performance sharpens distinctions with neoliberal governments and unsettles existing typologies. We review the labour policies of left governments in four countries—Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina—to show how a labour lens enriches our understanding of left governments in the region

Two-body and three-body substructures served as building blocks in small spin-3 condensates

It was found that stable few-body spin-structures, pairs and triplexes, may exist as basic constituents in small spin-3 condensates, and they will play the role as building blocks when the parameters of interaction are appropriate. Specific method is designed to find out these constituents.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

Comparison of model and flight test data for an augmented jet flap STOL research aircraft

    Get PDF
Aerodynamic design data for the Augmented Jet Flap STOL Research Aircraft or commonly known as the Augmentor-Wing Jet-STOL Research Aircraft was based on results of tests carried out on a large scale research model in the NASA Ames 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel. Since the model differs in some respects from the aircraft, precise correlation between tunnel and flight test is not expected, however the major areas of confidence derived from the wind tunnel tests are delineated, and for the most part, tunnel results compare favorably with flight experience. In some areas the model tests were known to be nonrepresentative so that a degree of uncertainty remained: these areas of greater uncertainty are identified, and discussed in the light of subsequent flight tests

Determining crustal strain rates with a spaceborne geodynamics ranging system. 2: Station coordinate analysis

    Get PDF
The use of a spaceborne geodynamics ranging system for determining crustal strain rates is analyzed. The use of site coordinates rather than intersite baseline distances for the strain rate determinations is emphasized. After discussing the analytical techniques which are to be employed, numerical results are presented which suggest that the use of site coordinates would result in a 20-70% improvement in the precision of the deduced values of straining. Precision of a few parts in 10 to the 9th power would be achievable with simple geometrics and a decade or two of measurements; precisions of a few parts in 10 to the 8th power would be achievable in a few years. A consideration of possible correlations among the derived target site coordinates leads to the conclusion that, with the proper choice of coordinate systems, the correlations can be made small and non-detrimental to the strain rate determinations

A rack-mounted precision waveguide-below-cutoff attenuator with an absolute electronic readout

    Get PDF
A coaxial precision waveguide-below-cutoff attenuator is described which uses an absolute (unambiguous) electronic digital readout of displacement in inches in addition to the usual gear driven mechanical counter-dial readout in decibels. The attenuator is rack-mountable and has the input and output RF connectors in a fixed position. The attenuation rate for 55, 50, and 30 MHz operation is given along with a discussion of sources of errors. In addition, information is included to aid the user in making adjustments on the attenuator should it be damaged or disassembled for any reason
