Broad redshifted line as a signature of outflow
We formulate and solve the diffusion problem of line photon propagation in a
bulk outflow from a compact object (black hole or neutron star) using a generic
assumption regarding the distribution of line photons within the outflow.
Thomson scattering of the line photons within the expanding flow leads to a
decrease of their energy which is of first order in v/c, where v is the outflow
velocity and c is the speed of light. We demonstrate that the emergent line
profile is closely related to the time distribution of photons diffusing
through the flow (the light curve) and consists of a broad redshifted feature.
We analyzed the line profiles for the general case of outflow density
distribution. We emphasize that the redshifted lines are intrinsic properties

Histone deacetylase adaptation in single ventricle heart disease and a young animal model of right ventricular hypertrophy.
BackgroundHistone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors are promising therapeutics for various forms of cardiac diseases. The purpose of this study was to assess cardiac HDAC catalytic activity and expression in children with single ventricle (SV) heart disease of right ventricular morphology, as well as in a rodent model of right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH).MethodsHomogenates of right ventricle (RV) explants from non-failing controls and children born with a SV were assayed for HDAC catalytic activity and HDAC isoform expression. Postnatal 1-day-old rat pups were placed in hypoxic conditions, and echocardiographic analysis, gene expression, HDAC catalytic activity, and isoform expression studies of the RV were performed.ResultsClass I, IIa, and IIb HDAC catalytic activity and protein expression were elevated in the hearts of children born with a SV. Hypoxic neonatal rats demonstrated RVH, abnormal gene expression, elevated class I and class IIb HDAC catalytic activity, and protein expression in the RV compared with those in the control.ConclusionsThese data suggest that myocardial HDAC adaptations occur in the SV heart and could represent a novel therapeutic target. Although further characterization of the hypoxic neonatal rat is needed, this animal model may be suitable for preclinical investigations of pediatric RV disease and could serve as a useful model for future mechanistic studies
A Spatial Decision Support System for Tourism Land Use Planning
One of the most complex challenges the tourism industry faces is keeping up to date with information technology developments caused by the globalisation of information and advances in technology. The development of robust decision support systems for tourism land use planning is a way to address this challenge.This paper demonstrates how a spatial decision support system (SDSS), called the Land Use Decision sUpport System (LUDUS), can contribute in allocating complex forms of tourism. The system combines an artificial intelligence technique, called ontologies, with Geographic Information Systems and object-oriented programming to support decision-making in spatial planning. The system consists of two subsystems: the Insert Data Subsystem and the Graphic Imaging and Decision Support Subsystem. The core of the system is an ontology that is aligned to a standard of the Open Geospatial Consortium, called Geosparql.The case study of this paper is the Mastichochoria area of Chios Island, Greece. Therefore, the structure of the ontology was modelled according to the provisions of Greek legislation. The results produced confirmed the correct coding and application of the system’s criteria. The validity, accuracy and reliability of the results were also confirmed.The adopted approach facilitates the identification of alternative options for allocating, among other land use types, complex forms of tourism development in suburban areas, by examining the provisions of the legal framework as well as their geology and terrain
Going Solo: findings from a survey of women ageing without a partner and who do not have children
Greater longevity in the UK population has led to the increasing diversity of women experiencing ageing in a multitude of ways. Internationally gender inequalities within ageing are still relatively invisible within both government policy and everyday life for particular groups of women. This paper explores the concept of women growing older ‘solo’ by which we mean women who find themselves non partnered and ageing without children as they move into later life. We report on the findings from a mixed-methods survey of 76 solo women in the UK aged 50 years and over, used to provide a broader overview of the issues and challenges they face as they move into later life. Qualitative data from the survey captured respondents’ perspectives about the links between their relationships status and wellbeing in later life and highlighted specific cumulative disadvantages emerging for some women as a result of their solo lifestyles. We discuss two key themes were identified; ‘solo-loneliness’ and ‘meaningful futures’ in conjunction with the relevant literature and make suggestions for future research within gender and ageing studies that could enhance more positive approaches to solo lifestyles
First narrow-band search for continuous gravitational waves from known pulsars in advanced detector data
Spinning neutron stars asymmetric with respect to their rotation axis are potential sources of
continuous gravitational waves for ground-based interferometric detectors. In the case of known pulsars a
fully coherent search, based on matched filtering, which uses the position and rotational parameters
obtained from electromagnetic observations, can be carried out. Matched filtering maximizes the signalto-
noise (SNR) ratio, but a large sensitivity loss is expected in case of even a very small mismatch
between the assumed and the true signal parameters. For this reason, narrow-band analysis methods have
been developed, allowing a fully coherent search for gravitational waves from known pulsars over a
fraction of a hertz and several spin-down values. In this paper we describe a narrow-band search of
11 pulsars using data from Advanced LIGO’s first observing run. Although we have found several initial
outliers, further studies show no significant evidence for the presence of a gravitational wave signal.
Finally, we have placed upper limits on the signal strain amplitude lower than the spin-down limit for 5 of
the 11 targets over the bands searched; in the case of J1813-1749 the spin-down limit has been beaten for
the first time. For an additional 3 targets, the median upper limit across the search bands is below the
spin-down limit. This is the most sensitive narrow-band search for continuous gravitational waves carried
out so far
The SXS Collaboration catalog of binary black hole simulations
Accurate models of gravitational waves from merging black holes are necessary
for detectors to observe as many events as possible while extracting the
maximum science. Near the time of merger, the gravitational waves from merging
black holes can be computed only using numerical relativity. In this paper, we
present a major update of the Simulating eXtreme Spacetimes (SXS) Collaboration
catalog of numerical simulations for merging black holes. The catalog contains
2018 distinct configurations (a factor of 11 increase compared to the 2013 SXS
catalog), including 1426 spin-precessing configurations, with mass ratios
between 1 and 10, and spin magnitudes up to 0.998. The median length of a
waveform in the catalog is 39 cycles of the dominant
gravitational-wave mode, with the shortest waveform containing 7.0 cycles and
the longest 351.3 cycles. We discuss improvements such as correcting for moving
centers of mass and extended coverage of the parameter space. We also present a
thorough analysis of numerical errors, finding typical truncation errors
corresponding to a waveform mismatch of . The simulations provide
remnant masses and spins with uncertainties of 0.03% and 0.1% (
percentile), about an order of magnitude better than analytical models for
remnant properties. The full catalog is publicly available at
