    Molecular Dynamics Simulations of a Pressure-induced Glass Transition

    We simulate the compression of a two-component Lennard-Jones liquid at a variety of constant temperatures using a molecular dynamics algorithm in an isobaric-isothermal ensemble. The viscosity of the liquid increases with pressure, undergoing a broadened transition into a structurally arrested, amorphous state. This transition, like the more familiar one induced by cooling, is correlated with a significant increase in icosahedral ordering. In fact, the structure of the final state, as measured by an analysis of the bonding, is essentially the same in the glassy, frozen state whether produced by squeezing or by cooling under pressure. We have computed an effective hard-sphere packing fraction at the transition, defining the transition pressure or temperature by a cutoff in the diffusion constant, analogous to the traditional laboratory definition of the glass transition by an arbitrary, low cutoff in viscosity. The packing fraction at this transition point is not constant, but is consistently higher for runs compressed at higher temperature. We show that this is because the transition point defined by a constant cutoff in the diffusion constant is not the same as the point of structural arrest, at which further changes in pressure induce no further structural changes, but that the two alternate descriptions may be reconciled by using a thermally activated cutoff for the diffusion constant. This enables estimation of the characteristic activation energy for diffusion at the point of structural arrest.Comment: Latex using Revtex macro

    We show here that the model Hamiltonian used in our paper for ion vibrating in a q-analog harmonic oscillator trap and interacting with a classical single-mode light field is indeed obtained by replacing the usual bosonic creation and annihilation operators of the harmonic trap model by their q-deformed counterparts. The approximations made in our paper amount to using for the ion-laser interaction in a q-analog harmonic oscillator trap, the operator F_{q}=exp{-(|\epsilon|^2}/2)}exp{i\epsilon A^{\dagger}}exp{i\epsilon A}, which is analogous to the corresponding operator for ion in a harmonic oscillator trap that is F=exp(ϵ2/2)expiϵaexpiϵaF=exp{-(|\epsilon|^2 /2)}exp{i\epsilon a^{\dagger }}exp{i\epsilon a}.     Examining the neuroscience evidence for sensory-driven neuroplasticity: implications for sensory-based occupational therapy for children and adolescents.

    When Ayres first presented the theory of sensory integration (SI), she grounded it in the neuroscience literature. Neuroplasticity was then, and is today, considered to be at the heart of this theory. This evidence-based review sought to critically examine the basic science literature to specifically identify evidence for the assumptions and tenets of Ayres\u27 theory of SI. We reviewed literature between 1964 and 2005, within psychological, physiological, and biomedical areas, addressing neuroplasticity. The review focused on sensorimotor-based neuroplasticity; explored the data that addressed the links among sensory input, brain function, and behavior; and evaluated its relevance in terms of supporting or refuting the theoretical premise of occupational therapy using an SI framework (OT/SI) to treatment. Although direct application from basic science to OT/SI is not feasible, we concluded that there was a basis for the assumptions of Ayes\u27 SI theory

    The BCS theory of q-deformed nucleon pairs - qBCS

    We construct a coherent state of q-deformed zero coupled nucleon pairs distributed in several single-particle orbits. Using a variational approach, the set of equations of qBCS theory, to be solved self consistently for occupation probabilities, gap parameter Delta, and the chemical potential lambda, is obtained. Results for valence nucleons in nuclear degenerate sdg major shell show that the strongly coupled zero angular momentum nucleon pairs can be substituted by weakly coupled q-deformed zero angular momentum nucleon pairs. A study of Sn isotopes reveals a well defined universe of (G, q) values, for which qBCS converges. While the qBCS and BCS show similar results for Gap parameter Delta in Sn isotopes, the ground state energies are lower in qBCS. The pairing correlations in N nucleon system, increase with increasing q (for q real).Comment: 8 pages, REVTEX, 3 eps figure

    Sacral Neuromodulation in Children

    Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) has emerged as a treatment option for refractory lower urinary tract and bowel dysfunction in children. SNM is typically reserved for a select population of children who have failed an extended period of behavioral modification, biofeedback, and pharmacologic therapy. The surgical techniques for SNM in children are analogous to those in adults and include both one- and two-stage procedures as well as a peripheral nerve evaluation with the InterStim® system (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN). Most studies have observed not only an improvement in symptoms and quality of life in children undergoing SNM for non-neurogenic and neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction but also a much higher reoperative rate than in adults. Further high-quality research is necessary to corroborate the results of earlier studies and to better define the indications for SNM in children

    Pencegahan Penularan HIV/AIDS: Efektivitas Metode KIE “Aku Bangga Aku Tahu (ABAT)”

    The epidemic of HIV/AIDS in Indonesia is one of fastest growing among Asian countries. One of the efforts of the government to reduce HIV/AIDS cases is by implementing Information Education and Communication (IEC) which is so-called “Aku Bangga Aku Tahu (ABAT)”. However, the effectiveness of ABAT and its methods have not been evaluated. The aim of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of IEC of ABAT on knowledge, perception, stigma and HIV/AIDS behavioral prevention among selected high school students. This is a quantitative research, using pre-test, post-test, and control group of Quasi Experimental Design. A number of 221 students were chosen using multistage random sampling, divided into groups of single, multiple and control. The results of this study showed that the IEC of ABAT effectively increased knowledge, perception and preventive behavior, but it had not been able to reduce stigma. IEC of ABAT multiple sessions provided higher impact thanthat of the single session (p < 0.05). It is necessary to improve methods of IEC to encourage the improvement of knowledge, perception, and reduced stigma and HIV/AIDS risk behavior
