    Complex asteroseismology of the Slowly Pulsating B-type star HD74560

    We present the results of complex seismic modelling of the Slowly Pulsating B-type star HD74560. The star pulsates in five frequencies detected in photometric observations. For all these frequencies, we identify the mode degree, \ell. For two of them, found also in spectroscopic data, we are able to derived the empirical values of the complex nonadiabatic parameter ff. We test effects of chemical composition and opacity data. Our results show that the properties of seismic models of SPB stars differ significantly from those of the more massive β\beta Cephei stars.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, conference proceedings, to appear in ASS

    Differential renal effects of candesartan at high-and ultra-high doses in diabetic mice: potential role of  ACE2/AT2R/Mas

    High doses of Ang II receptor (AT1R) blockers (ARBs) are renoprotective in diabetes. Underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We evaluated whether high/ultra-high doses of candesartan (ARB) up-regulate angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)/Ang II type 2 receptor (AT2R)/Mas receptor [protective axis of the of the renin–angiotensin system (RAS)] in diabetic mice. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), albuminuria and expression/activity of RAS components were assessed in diabetic db/db and control db/+ mice treated with increasing candesartan doses (intermediate, 1 mg/kg/d; high, 5 mg/kg/d; ultra-high, 25 and 75 mg/kg/d; 4 weeks). Lower doses candesartan did not influence SBP, but ultra-high doses reduced SBP in both groups. Plasma glucose and albuminuria were increased in db/db compared with db/+ mice. In diabetic mice treated with intermediate dose candesartan, renal tubular damage and albuminuria were ameliorated and expression of ACE2, AT2R and Mas and activity of ACE2 were increased, effects associated with reduced ERK1/2 phosphorylation, decreased fibrosis and renal protection. Ultra-high doses did not influence the ACE2/AT2R/Mas axis and promoted renal injury with increased renal ERK1/2 activation and exaggerated fibronectin expression in db/db mice. Our study demonstrates dose-related effects of candesartan in diabetic nephropathy: intermediate–high dose candesartan is renoprotective, whereas ultra-high dose candesartan induces renal damage. Molecular processes associated with these effects involve differential modulation of the ACE2/AT2R/Mas axis: intermediate–high dose candesartan up-regulating RAS protective components and attenuating pro-fibrotic processes, and ultra-high doses having opposite effects. These findings suggest novel mechanisms through the protective RAS axis, whereby candesartan may ameliorate diabetic nephropathy. Our findings also highlight potential injurious renal effects of ultra-high dose candesartan in diabetes

    Analysis of MERCATOR data Part I: variable B stars

    We re-classified 31 variable B stars which were observed more than 50 times in the Geneva photometric system with the P7 photometer attached to the MERCATOR telescope (La Palma) during its first 3 years of scientific observations. HD89688 is a possible beta Cephei/slowly pulsating B star hybrid and the main mode of the COROT target HD180642 shows non-linear effects. The Maia candidates are re-classified as either ellipsoidal variables or spotted stars. Although the mode identification is still ongoing, all the well-identified modes so far have a degree l = 0, 1 or 2.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures.     Spectroscopic Survey of {\gamma} Doradus Stars I. Comprehensive atmospheric parameters and abundance analysis of {\gamma} Doradus stars

    We present a spectroscopic survey of known and candidate γ\gamma\,Doradus stars. The high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra of 52 objects were collected by five different spectrographs. The spectral classification, atmospheric parameters (\teff, logg\log g, ξ\xi), vsiniv\sin i and chemical composition of the stars were derived. The stellar spectral and luminosity classes were found between G0-A7 and IV-V, respectively. The initial values for \teff\ and \logg\ were determined from the photometric indices and spectral energy distribution. Those parameters were improved by the analysis of hydrogen lines. The final values of \teff, \logg\ and ξ\xi were derived from the iron lines analysis. The \teff\ values were found between 6000\,K and 7900\,K, while \logg\,values range from 3.8 to 4.5\,dex. Chemical abundances and vsiniv\sin i values were derived by the spectrum synthesis method. The vsiniv\sin i values were found between 5 and 240\,km\,s1^{-1}. The chemical abundance pattern of γ\gamma\,Doradus stars were compared with the pattern of non-pulsating stars. It turned out that there is no significant difference in abundance patterns between these two groups. Additionally, the relations between the atmospheric parameters and the pulsation quantities were checked. A strong correlation between the vsiniv\sin i and the pulsation periods of γ\gamma\,Doradus variables was obtained. The accurate positions of the analysed stars in the H-R diagram have been shown. Most of our objects are located inside or close to the blue edge of the theoretical instability strip of γ\gamma\,Doradus.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figure

    The B-type variable HD 131120 modelled by rotational modulation

    We present ground-based multi-colour Geneva photometry and high-resolution spectra of the variable B-type star HD 131120. All sets of data reveal a monoperiodic star with a period of 1.569 days. We compare the variability of the star with a non-radial g-mode pulsation model and with a rotational modulation model. The latter model appears to be the best explanation for the observed line-profile variations of the star. Moreover, contrary to the pulsational model, it is able to reproduce the behaviour of the first three moments of the Si and He lines as well as the large variability of their equivalent width. We therefore remove the star from the list of new Slowly Pulsating B stars found from Hipparcos data.     Discovery of Magnetic Fields in Slowly Pulsating B Stars

    We present the first observations and conclusions of a magnetic survey with FORS 1 at the VLT of a sample of 25 Slowly Pulsating B stars. A clear mean longitudinal magnetic field of the order of a few hundred Gauss was detected in eleven SPBs. Among them several SPBs show a magnetic field that varies in time. It becomes clear that SPBs cannot be regarded anymore as non-magnetic stars

    Spectrum Analysis of Bright Kepler Gamma Doradus Candidate Stars

    Ground-based spectroscopic follow-up observations of the pulsating stars observed by the Kepler satellite mission are needed for their asteroseismic modelling. We aim to derive the fundamental parameters for a sample of 26 Gamma Doradus candidate stars observed by the Kepler satellite mission to accomplish one of the required preconditions for their asteroseismic modelling and to compare our results with the types of pulsators expected from the existing light curve analysis. We use the spectrum synthesis method to derive the fundamental parameters like Teff, logg, [M/H], and vsini from newly obtained spectra and compute the spectral energy distribution from literature photometry to get an independent measure of Teff. We find that most of the derived Teff values agree with the values given in the Kepler Input Catalogue. According to their positions in the HR-diagram three stars are expected Gamma Dor stars, ten stars are expected Delta Sct stars, and seven stars are possibly Delta Sct stars at the hot border of the instability strip. Four stars in our sample are found to be spectroscopic binary candidates and four stars have very low metallicity where two show about solar C abundance. Six of the 10 stars located in the Delta Sct instability region of the HR-diagram show both Delta Sct and Gamma Dor-type oscillations in their light curves implying that Gamma Dor-like oscillations are much more common among the Delta Sct stars than predicted by theory. Moreover, seven stars showing periods in the Delta Sct and the Delta Sct-Gamma Dor range in their light curves are located in the HR-diagram left of the blue edge of the theoretical Delta Sct instability strip. The consistency of these findings with recent investigations based on high-quality Kepler data implies the need for a revision of the theoretical Gamma Dor and Delta Sct instability strips.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 7 tables; accepted for publication in MNRA

    Chemerin receptor blockade improves vascular function in diabetic obese mice via redox-sensitive- and Akt-dependent pathways

    Chemerin and its G protein-coupled receptor [chemerin receptor 23 (ChemR23)] have been associated with endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and insulin resistance. However, the role of chemerin on insulin signaling in the vasculature is still unknown. We aimed to determine whether chemerin reduces vascular insulin signaling and whether there is interplay between chemerin/ChemR23, insulin resistance, and vascular complications associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Molecular and vascular mechanisms were probed in mesenteric arteries and cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) from C57BL/6J, nondiabetic lean db/m, and diabetic obese db/db mice as well as in human microvascular endothelial cells (HMECs). Chemerin decreased insulin-induced vasodilatation in C57BL/6J mice, an effect prevented by CCX832 (ChemR23 antagonist) treatment. In VSMCs, chemerin, via oxidative stress- and ChemR23-dependent mechanisms, decreased insulin-induced Akt phosphorylation, glucose transporter 4 translocation to the membrane, and glucose uptake. In HMECs, chemerin decreased insulin-activated nitric oxide signaling. AMP-activated protein kinase phosphorylation was reduced by chemerin in both HMECs and VSMCs. CCX832 treatment of db/db mice decreased body weight, insulin, and glucose levels as well as vascular oxidative stress. CCX832 also partially restored vascular insulin responses in db/db and high-fat diet-fed mice. Our novel in vivo findings highlight chemerin/ChemR23 as a promising therapeutic target to limit insulin resistance and vascular complications associated with obesity-related diabetes

    On the merit of a Central Limit Theorem-based approximation in statistical physics

    The applicability conditions of a recently reported Central Limit Theorem-based approximation method in statistical physics are investigated and rigorously determined. The failure of this method at low and intermediate temperature is proved as well as its inadequacy to disclose quantum criticalities at fixed temperatures. Its high temperature predictions are in addition shown to coincide with those stemming from straightforward appropriate expansions up to (k_B T)^(-2). Our results are clearly illustrated by comparing the exact and approximate temperature dependence of the free energy of some exemplary physical systems.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur

    Multiperiodicity in the large-amplitude rapidly-rotating β\beta Ceph ei star HD 203664

    We perform a seismic study of the young massive β\beta Cephei star HD 203664 with the goal to constrain its interior structure. Our study is based on a time series of 328 new Geneva 7-colour photometric data of the star spread over 496.8 days. The data confirm the frequency of the dominant mode of the star which we refine to f1=6.02885f_1=6.02885 c d1^{-1}. The mode has a large amplitude of 37 mmag in V and is unambiguously identified as a dipole mode (=2\ell=2) from its amplitude ratios and non-adiabatic computations. Besides f1f_1, we discover two additional new frequencies in the star with amplitudes above 4σ4\sigma: f2=6.82902f_2=6.82902 c d1^{-1} and f3=4.81543f_3=4.81543 c d1^{-1} or one of their daily aliases. The amplitudes of these two modes are only between 3 and 4 mmag which explains why they were not detected before. Their amplitude ratios are too uncertain for mode identification. We show that the observed oscillation spectrum of HD 203664 is compatible with standard stellar models but that we have insufficient information for asteroseismic inferences. Among the large-amplitude β\beta Cephei stars, HD 203664 stands out as the only one rotating at a significant fraction of its critical rotation velocity (40\sim 40%).Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A (Astronomy & Astrophysics
