Extraction of silymarin compounds from milk thistle (Silybum marianum) seed using hot, liquid water as the solvent
High-value specialty chemicals are usually obtained from natural products by extracting with generally regarded as safe (GRAS) solvents. Because organic solvents are quite often used, high operating and disposal costs occur. When compared to traditional solvents, water is an interesting alternative because of its low operating and disposal costs. Milk thistle contains compounds (taxifolin, silychristin, silydianin, silybinin A, and silybinin B) that display hepatoxic protection properties. This paper examines the batch extraction of silymarin compounds from milk thistle seed meal in 50°C, 70°C, 85°C and 100°C water as a function of time. For taxifolin, silychristin, silybinin A, and silybinin B, extraction with 100°C water resulted in the highest yields. After 210 min of extraction at 100°C, the yield of taxifolin was 1.2 mg/g of seed while the yields of silychristin, silybinin A, and silybinin B were 5.0, 1.8 and 3.3 mg/g of seed, respectively. The ratios of the extracted compounds, and particularly the ratios at long extraction times, showed that the more polar compounds (taxifolin and silychristin) were preferentially extracted at 85°C, while the less polar silybinin was preferentially extracted at 100°C
Quantum state conversion by cross-Kerr interaction
A generalized Mach-Zehnder-type interferometer equipped with cross-Kerr
elements is proposed to convert N-photon truncated single-mode quantum states
into (N+1)-mode single-photon states, which are suitable for further state
manipulation by means of beam splitter arrays and ON/OFF-detections, and vice
versa. Applications to the realization of unitary and non-unitary
transformations, quantum state reconstruction, and quantum telemanipulation are

Cluster spacecraft observations of a ULF wave enhanced by Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR)
Space Plasma Exploration by Active Radar (SPEAR) is a high-latitude ionospheric heating facility capable of exciting ULF waves on local magnetic field lines. We examine an interval from 1 February 2006 when SPEAR was transmitting a 1 Hz modulation signal with a 10 min on-off cycle. Ground magnetometer data indicated that SPEAR modulated currents in the local ionosphere at 1 Hz, and enhanced a natural field line resonance with a 10 min period. During this interval the Cluster spacecraft passed over the heater site. Signatures of the SPEAR-enhanced field line resonance were present in the magnetic field data measured by the magnetometer on-board Cluster-2. These are the first joint ground- and space-based detections of field line tagging by SPEAR
Dynamical Effects from Asteroid Belts for Planetary Systems
The orbital evolution and stability of planetary systems with interaction
from the belts is studied using the standard phase-plane analysis. In addition
to the fixed point which corresponds to the Keplerian orbit, there are other
fixed points around the inner and outer edges of the belt. Our results show
that for the planets, the probability to move stably around the inner edge is
larger than the one to move around the outer edge. It is also interesting that
there is a limit cycle of semi-attractor for a particular case. Applying our
results to the Solar System, we find that our results could provide a natural
mechanism to do the orbit rearrangement for the larger Kuiper Belt Objects and
thus successfully explain the absence of these objects beyond 50 AU.Comment: accepted by International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos in Aug.

Microstructural strain energy of α-uranium determined by calorimetry and neutron diffractometry
The microstructural contribution to the heat capacity of α-uranium was determined by measuring the heat-capacity difference between polycrystalline and single-crystal samples from 77 to 320 K. When cooled to 77 K and then heated to about 280 K, the uranium microstructure released (3±1) J/mol of strain energy. On further heating to 300 K, the microstructure absorbed energy as it began to redevelop microstrains. Anisotropic strain-broadening parameters were extracted from neutron-diffraction measurements on polycrystals. Combining the strain-broadening parameters with anisotropic elastic constants from the literature, the microstructural strain energy is predicted in the two limiting cases of statistically isotropic stress and statistically isotropic strain. The result calculated in the limit of statistically isotropic stress was (3.7±0.5) J/mol K at 77 K and (1±0.5) J/mol at room temperature. In the limit of statistically isotropic strain, the values were (7.8±0.5) J/mol K at 77 K and (4.5±0.5) J/mol at room temperature. In both cases the changes in the microstructural strain energy showed good agreement with the calorimetry
Conditional quantum-state transformation at a beam splitter
Using conditional measurement on a beam splitter, we study the transformation
of the quantum state of the signal mode within the concept of two-port
non-unitary transformation. Allowing for arbitrary quantum states of both the
input reference mode and the output reference mode on which the measurement is
performed, we show that the non-unitary transformation operator can be given as
an -ordered operator product, where the value of is entirely determined
by the absolute value of the beam splitter reflectance (or transmittance). The
formalism generalizes previously obtained results that can be recovered by
simple specification of the non-unitary transformation operator. As an
application, we consider the generation of Schr\"odinger-cat-like states. An
extension to mixed states and imperfect detection is outlined.Comment: 7 Postscript figures, using Late
Optical Polarization and Spectral Variability in the M87 Jet
During the last decade, M87's jet has been the site of an extraordinary
variability event, with one knot (HST-1) increasing by over a factor 100 in
brightness. Variability was also seen on timescales of months in the nuclear
flux. Here we discuss the optical-UV polarization and spectral variability of
these components, which show vastly different behavior. HST-1 shows a highly
significant correlation between flux and polarization, with P increasing from
at minimum to >40% at maximum, while the orientation of its electric
vector stayed constant. HST-1's optical-UV spectrum is very hard
(, ), and displays "hard lags"
during epochs 2004.9-2005.5, including the peak of the flare, with soft lags at
later epochs. We interpret the behavior of HST-1 as enhanced particle
acceleration in a shock, with cooling from both particle aging and the
relaxation of the compression. We set 2 upper limits of
parsecs and 1.02 on the size and advance speed of the flaring region. The
slight deviation of the electric vector orientation from the jet PA, makes it
likely that on smaller scales the flaring region has either a double or twisted
structure. By contrast, the nucleus displays much more rapid variability, with
a highly variable electric vector orientation and 'looping' in the
plane. The nucleus has a much steeper spectrum () but
does not show UV-optical spectral variability. Its behavior can be interpreted
as either a helical distortion to a steady jet or a shock propagating through a

Entanglement purification of multi-mode quantum states
An iterative random procedure is considered allowing an entanglement
purification of a class of multi-mode quantum states. In certain cases, a
complete purification may be achieved using only a single signal state
preparation. A physical implementation based on beam splitter arrays and
non-linear elements is suggested. The influence of loss is analyzed in the

The CORALIE survey for southern extra-solar planets. X. A Hot Jupiter orbiting HD73256
Recent radial-velocity measurements obtained with the CORALIE spectrograph on
the 1.2-m Euler Swiss telescope at La Silla unveil the presence of a new
Jovian-mass Hot Jupiter around HD 73256. The 1.85-M_Jup planet moves on an
extremely short-period (P=2.5486 d), quasi-circular orbit. The best Keplerian
orbital solution is presented together with an unsuccessful photometric
planetary-transit search performed with the SAT Danish telescope at La Silla.
Over the time span of the observations, the photometric follow-up of the
candidate has nevertheless revealed a P=14-d photometric periodicity
corresponding to the rotational period of the star. This variation as well as
the radial-velocity jitter around the Keplerian solution are shown to be

Role of thyroid hormones in early postnatal development of skeletal muscle and its implications for undernutrition
Published online by Cambridge University Press 09 Mar 2007Energy intake profoundly influences many endocrine axes which in turn play a central role in development. The specific influence of a short period of mild hypothyroidism, similar to that induced by undernutrition, in regulating muscle development has been assessed in a large mammal during early postnatal life. Hypothyroidism was induced by providing methimazole and iopanoic acid in the feed of piglets between 4 and 14 d of age, and controls were pair-fed to the energy intake of their hypothyroid littermates. Thyroid status was evaluated, and myofibre differentiation and cation pump concentrations were then assessed in the following functionally distinct muscles: longissimus dorsi (l. dorsi), soleus and rhomboideus. Reductions in plasma concentrations of thyroxine (T4; 32%, P < O·Ol), triiodothyronine (T3;48%, P < 0·001), free T3, (58%, P < 0·001)and hepatic 5'-monodeiodinase (EC 1.11.1.8) activity (74%, P < 0·001) occurred with treatment. Small, although significant, increases in the proportion of type I slow-twitch oxidative fibres occurred with mild hypothyroidism, in l. dorsi (2%, P < 0·01) and soleus(7%, P < 0·01). Nuclear T3-receptor concentration in l. dorsi of hypothyroid animals compared with controls increased by 46% (P < 0·001), a response that may represent a homeostatic mechanism making muscle more sensitive to low levels of circulating thyroid hormones. Nevertheless, Na+, K+-ATPase (EC 3.6.1.37) concentration was reduced by 15–16% in all muscles (l.dorsi P< 0·05,soleus P < 0·001, rhomboideus P < 0·05), and Ca2+-ATPase (EC 3.6.1.38) concentration was significantly reduced in the two slow-twitch muscles: by 22% in rhomboideus (P < 0·001) and 23% in soleus (P < 0·05). It is concluded that during early postnatal development of large mammals a period of mild hypothyroidism, comparable with that found during undernutrition, induces changes in myofibre differentiation and a down-regulation of cation pumps in skeletal muscle. Such changes would result in slowness of movement and muscle weakness, and also reduce ATP hydrolysis with a concomitant improvement in energetic efficiency.A. P. Harrison, D. R. Tivey, T.
