Analytical three-dimensional bright solitons and soliton-pairs in Bose-Einstein condensates with time-space modulation
We provide analytical three-dimensional bright multi-soliton solutions to the
(3+1)-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with time and space-dependent
potential, time-dependent nonlinearity, and gain/loss. The zigzag propagation
trace and the breathing behavior of solitons are observed. Different shapes of
bright solitons and fascinating interactions between two solitons can be
achieved with different parameters. The obtained results may raise the
possibility of relative experiments and potential applications.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
A percutaneous needle biopsy technique for sampling the supraclavicular brown adipose tissue depot of humans.
Brown adipose tissue (BAT) has been proposed as a potential target tissue against obesity and its related metabolic complications. Although the molecular and functional characteristics of BAT have been intensively studied in rodents, only a few studies have used human BAT specimens due to the difficulty of sampling human BAT deposits. We established a novel positron emission tomography and computed tomography-guided Bergström needle biopsy technique to acquire human BAT specimens from the supraclavicular area in human subjects. Forty-three biopsies were performed on 23 participants. The procedure was tolerated well by the majority of participants. No major complications were noted. Numbness (9.6%) and hematoma (2.3%) were the two minor complications noted, which fully resolved. Thus, the proposed biopsy technique can be considered safe with only minimal risk of adverse events. Adoption of the proposed method is expected to increase the sampling of the supraclavicular BAT depot for research purposes so as to augment the scientific knowledge of the biology of human BAT
The meson annihilation to leptons and inclusive light hadrons
The annihilation of the meson to leptons and inclusive light hadrons is
analyzed in the framework of nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization. We find
that the decay mode, which escapes from the helicity suppression, contributes a
sizable fraction width. According to the analysis, the branching ratio due to
the contribution from the color-singlet component of the meson can be of
order (10^{-2}). We also estimate the contributions from the color-octet
components. With the velocity scaling rule of NRQCD, we find that the
color-octet contributions are sizable too, especially, in certain phase space
of the annihilation they are greater than (or comparative to) the color-singlet
component. A few observables relevant to the spectrum of charged lepton are
suggested, that may be used as measurements on the color-octet and
color-singlet components in the future experiments. A typical long

Exciton gas transport through nano-constrictions
An indirect exciton is a bound state of an electron and a hole in spatially
separated layers. Two-dimensional indirect excitons can be created optically in
heterostructures containing double quantum wells or atomically thin
semiconductors. We study theoretically transmission of such bosonic
quasiparticles through nano-constrictions. We show that quantum transport
phenomena, e.g., conductance quantization, single-slit diffraction, two-slit
interference, and the Talbot effect, are experimentally realizable in systems
of indirect excitons. We discuss similarities and differences between these

Ozonation of toluene over NaX, NaY and MCM-41 adsorbents was studied targeting for indoor air purification. The combined use of ozone and the various micro- or meso-porous adsorbents aimed to take advantage of the strong oxidizing capability of ozone. At the same time the residual ozone would be minimized due to the enhanced catalytic reaction in the porous structure. To lower the residual ozone level is a crucial issue as ozone is itself an indoor pollutant. The Lewis acid sites in the adsorbents were believed to decompose ozone into atomic oxygen, and the subsequent reactions would then convert the adsorbed toluene into CO2 and H2O. In the dry conditions, the MCM-41 required the smallest amount of material to achieve the 90% reduction target, followed by NaY and NaX. In the more humid environment (50% RH), extra amounts of MCM-41 and NaX adsorbents were required to reach the target as compared with the dry conditions. Desorption experiments were also conducted to study the amounts of various major species held in the adsorbents during the catalytic process. A material balance analysis of the major species in both the effluents and the adsorbents showed that within our experimental conditions, about 20–40% of the removed toluene was carried out via catalytic ozonation while adsorption covered the rest. Trace amount of intermediate species such as aldehydes and organic acids were identified in the desorbed gas indicating that they were withheld by the adsorbents during the air purification process and those in the effluent were below detection levels.C.W. Critical behaviour of combinatorial search algorithms, and the unitary-propagation universality class
The probability P(alpha, N) that search algorithms for random Satisfiability
problems successfully find a solution is studied as a function of the ratio
alpha of constraints per variable and the number N of variables. P is shown to
be finite if alpha lies below an algorithm--dependent threshold alpha\_A, and
exponentially small in N above. The critical behaviour is universal for all
algorithms based on the widely-used unitary propagation rule: P[ (1 + epsilon)
alpha\_A, N] ~ exp[-N^(1/6) Phi(epsilon N^(1/3)) ]. Exponents are related to
the critical behaviour of random graphs, and the scaling function Phi is
exactly calculated through a mapping onto a diffusion-and-death problem.Comment: 7 pages; 3 figure
Hadronic production of the -wave excited -states ()
Adopting the complete approach of the perturbative QCD (pQCD)
and updated parton distribution functions, we have estimated the hadronic
production of -wave excited -states (). In the estimate,
special care on the relation of the production amplitude to the derivative of
wave function at origin of the potential model is payed. For experimental
references, main uncertainties are discussed, and the total cross sections and
the distributions of the production with reasonable cuts at the energies of
Tevatron and LHC are computed and presented. The results show that -wave
production may contribute to the -meson production indirectly by a factor
about 0.5 of the direct production, and with such a big cross section, it is
worth further to study the possibility to observe the -wave production
