    Concepts, Developments and Advanced Applications of the PAX Toolkit

    The Physics Analysis eXpert (PAX) is an open source toolkit for high energy physics analysis. The C++ class collection provided by PAX is deployed in a number of analyses with complex event topologies at Tevatron and LHC. In this article, we summarize basic concepts and class structure of the PAX kernel. We report about the most recent developments of the kernel and introduce two new PAX accessories. The PaxFactory, that provides a class collection to facilitate event hypothesis evolution, and VisualPax, a Graphical User Interface for PAX objects

    PAX (Physics Analysis Expert) is a novel, C++ based toolkit designed to assist teams in particle physics data analysis issues. The core of PAX are event interpretation containers, holding relevant information about and possible interpretations of a physics event. Providing this new level of abstraction beyond the results of the detector reconstruction programs, PAX facilitates the buildup and use of modern analysis factories.     Rabl's model of the interphase chromosome arrangement tested in Chinise hamster cells by premature chromosome condensation and laser-UV-microbeam experiments

    In 1885 Carl Rabl published his theory on the internal structure of the interphase nucleus. We have tested two predictions of this theory in fibroblasts grown in vitro from a female Chinese hamster, namely (1) the Rabl-orientation of interphase chromosomes and (2) the stability of the chromosome arrangement established in telophase throughout the subsequent interphase. Tests were carried out by premature chromosome condensation (PCC) and laser-UV-microirradiation of the interphase nucleus. Rabl-orientation of chromosomes was observed in G1 PCCs and G2 PCCs. The cell nucleus was microirradiated in G1 at one or two sites and pulse-labelled with 3H-thymidine for 2h. Cells were processed for autoradiography either immediately thereafter or after an additional growth period of 10 to 60h. Autoradiographs show unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) in the microirradiated nuclear part(s). The distribution of labelled chromatin was evaluated in autoradiographs from 1035 cells after microirradiation of a single nuclear site and from 253 cells after microirradiation of two sites. After 30 to 60h postincubation the labelled regions still appeared coherent although the average size of the labelled nuclear area fr increased from 14.2% (0h) to 26.5% (60h). The relative distance dr, i.e. the distance between two microirradiated sites divided by the diameter of the whole nucleus, showed a slight decrease with increasing incubation time. Nine metaphase figures were evaluated for UDS-label after microirradiation of the nuclear edge in G1. An average of 4.3 chromosomes per cell were labelled. Several chromosomes showed joint labelling of both distal chromosome arms including the telomeres, while the centromeric region was free from label. This label pattern is interpreted as the result of a V-shaped orientation of these particular chromosomes in the interphase nucleus with their telomeric regions close to each other at the nuclear edge. Our data support the tested predictions of the Rabl-model. Small time-dependent changes of the nuclear space occupied by single chromosomes and of their relative positions in the interphase nucleus seem possible, while the territorial organization of interphase chromosomes and their arrangement in general is maintained during interphase.     Gamma-widths, lifetimes and fluctuations in the nuclear quasi-continuum

    Statistical γ\gamma-decay from highly excited states is determined by the nuclear level density (NLD) and the γ\gamma-ray strength function (γ\gammaSF). These average quantities have been measured for several nuclei using the Oslo method. For the first time, we exploit the NLD and γ\gammaSF to evaluate the γ\gamma-width in the energy region below the neutron binding energy, often called the quasi-continuum region. The lifetimes of states in the quasi-continuum are important benchmarks for a theoretical description of nuclear structure and dynamics at high temperature. The lifetimes may also have impact on reaction rates for the rapid neutron-capture process, now demonstrated to take place in neutron star mergers.Comment: CGS16, Shanghai 2017, Proceedings, 5 pages, 3 figure

    The First INTEGRAL AGN Catalog

    We present the first INTEGRAL AGN catalog, based on observations performed from launch of the mission in October 2002 until January 2004. The catalog includes 42 AGN, of which 10 are Seyfert 1, 17 are Seyfert 2, and 9 are intermediate Seyfert 1.5. The fraction of blazars is rather small with 5 detected objects, and only one galaxy cluster and no star-burst galaxies have been detected so far. A complete subset consists of 32 AGN with a significance limit of 7 sigma in the INTEGRAL/ISGRI 20-40 keV data. Although the sample is not flux limited, the distribution of sources shows a ratio of obscured to unobscured AGN of 1.5 - 2.0, consistent with luminosity dependent unified models for AGN. Only four Compton-thick AGN are found in the sample. Based on the INTEGRAL data presented here, the Seyfert 2 spectra are slightly harder (Gamma = 1.95 +- 0.01) than Seyfert 1.5 (Gamma = 2.10 +- 0.02) and Seyfert 1 (Gamma = 2.11 +- 0.05).Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Synthesis and characterization of novel efficient and thermally stable 2-aryl-5-dicyanovinylthiophenes and 5-aryl-5´-dicyanovinyl-2,2´-bithiophenes as potentially promising nonlinear optical (NLO) materials

    Two series of dicyanovinyl-substituted compounds namely 2-aryl-5-dicyanovinyl-thiophenes 4 and 5-aryl-5´-dicyanovinyl-2,2´-bithiophenes 6 were synthesized through Knoevenagel condensation of the corresponding 2-aryl-5-formyl-thiophenes 3 and 5-aryl-5´-formyl-2,2´-bithiophene 5 precursors. On the other hand, precursors 3 were prepared through the Vilsmeier-Haack-Arnold reaction (VHA) starting from inexpensive and easily available precursors such as acetophenones. This method produced the title compounds in higher yields than the recently reported synthesis via Suzuki coupling of functionalized aryl boronic acids with 5-bromo-2-formyl-thiophene. Electrochemical studies and characterization of the optical (linear and nonlinear), and thermal properties for compounds 5-6 indicate that, good nonlinearity is complemented by exceptional thermal stability for chromophores 6, making them potential candidates for several optoelectronic applications such as solvatochromic probes and nonlinear optical materials.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - PTDC/QUI/66251/2006, programa “Acções Integradas Luso-Francesas/CRUP-CP
