Resolving the bow-shock nebula around the old pulsar PSR B1929+10 with multi-epoch Chandra observations
We have studied the nearby old pulsar PSR B1929+10 and its surrounding
interstellar medium utilizing the sub-arcsecond angular resolution of the
Chandra X-ray Observatory. The Chandra data are found to be fully consistent
with the results obtained from deep XMM-Newton observations as far as the
pulsar is concerned. We confirm the non-thermal emission nature of the pulsar's
X-radiation. In addition to the X-ray trail already seen in previous
observations by the ROSAT and XMM-Newton X-ray observatories, we discovered an
arc-like nebula surrounding the pulsar. We interpret the feature as a bow-shock
nebula and discuss its energetics in the context of standard shock theory.Comment: Accepted by A&A, revised in accordance with referee's comment

Exercise enhances motor skill learning by neurotransmitter switching in the adult midbrain.
Physical exercise promotes motor skill learning in normal individuals and those with neurological disorders but its mechanism of action is unclear. We find that one week of voluntary wheel running enhances the acquisition of motor skills in normal adult mice. One week of running also induces switching from ACh to GABA expression in neurons in the caudal pedunculopontine nucleus (cPPN). Consistent with regulation of motor skills, we show that the switching neurons make projections to the substantia nigra (SN), ventral tegmental area (VTA) and ventrolateral-ventromedial nuclei of the thalamus (VL-VM). Use of viral vectors to override transmitter switching blocks the beneficial effect of running on motor skill learning. We suggest that neurotransmitter switching provides the basis by which sustained running benefits motor skill learning, presenting a target for clinical treatment of movement disorders
Detection of X-ray periodicity from a new eclipsing polar candidate XGPS-I J183251-100106
We report the results from a detailed analysis of an archival XMM-Newton
observation of the X-ray source XGPS-I J183251-100106, which has been suggested
as a promising magnetic cataclysmic variable candidate based on its optical
properties. A single periodic signal of 1.5 hrs is detected from all EPIC
cameras on board XMM-Newton. The phase-averaged X-ray spectrum can be
well-modeled with a thermal bremsstrahlung of a temperature kT~50 keV. Both
X-ray spectral and temporal behavior of this system suggest it as a eclipsing
cataclysmic variable of AM Herculis (or polar) type.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
Correlated versus Ferromagnetic State in Repulsively Interacting Two-Component Fermi Gases
Whether a spin-1/2 Fermi gas will become ferromagnetic as the strength of
repulsive interaction increases is a long-standing controversial issue.
Recently this problem is studied experimentally by Jo et al, Science, 325, 1521
(2009) in which the authors claim a ferromagnetic transition is observed. This
work is to point out the results of this experiment can not distinguish whether
the system is in a ferromagnetic state or in a non-magnetic but strongly
short-range correlated state. A conclusive experimental demonstration of
