Design Feasibility Study of a Space Station Freedom Truss
Here, the focus is on the design and configuration feasibility of the short spacer for the Space Station Program in its launch configuration. The product of this study is being used by Rockwell International (Rocketdyne Division) as they continue their design concept of the current short spacer configuration. It is anticipated that the launch loads will dominate the on-orbit loads and dictate the design configuration of the short spacer. At the present time, the on-orbit loads have not been generated. The structural analysis discussed herein is based on the transient events derived from the Space Transportation System (STS) Interface Control Document (ICD). The transient loading events consist of liftoff loads, landing loads, and emergency landing loads. The quasi-static loading events have been neglected, since the magnitude of the acceleration factors are lower than the transient acceleration factors. The normal mode analyses presented herein are based on the most feasible configurations with acceptable stress ranges
Influence of mass moment of inertia on normal modes of preloaded solar array mast
Earth-orbiting spacecraft often contain solar arrays or antennas supported by a preloaded mast. Because of weight and cost considerations, the structures supporting the spacecraft appendages are extremely light and flexible; therefore, it is vital to investigate the influence of all physical and structural parameters that may influence the dynamic behavior of the overall structure. The study primarily focuses on the mast for the space station solar arrays, but the formulations and the techniques developed in this study apply to any large and flexible mast in zero gravity. Furthermore, to determine the influence on the circular frequencies, the mass moment of inertia of the mast was incorporated into the governing equation of motion for bending. A finite element technique (MSC/NASTRAN) was used to verify the formulation. Results indicate that when the mast is relatively flexible and long, the mass moment inertia influences the circular frequencies
A transient plasticity study and low cycle fatigue analysis of the Space Station Freedom photovoltaic solar array blanket
The Space Station Freedom photovoltaic solar array blanket assembly is comprised of several layers of materials having dissimilar elastic, thermal, and mechanical properties. The operating temperature of the solar array, which ranges from -75 to +60 C, along with the material incompatibility of the blanket assembly components combine to cause an elastic-plastic stress in the weld points of the assembly. The weld points are secondary structures in nature, merely serving as electrical junctions for gathering the current. The thermal mechanical loading of the blanket assembly operating in low earth orbit continually changes throughout each 90 min orbit, which raises the possibility of fatigue induced failure. A series of structural analyses were performed in an attempt to predict the fatigue life of the solar cell in the Space Station Freedom photovoltaic array blanket. A nonlinear elastic-plastic MSC/NASTRAN analysis followed by a fatigue calculation indicated a fatigue life of 92,000 to 160,000 cycles for the solar cell weld tabs. Additional analyses predict a permanent buckling phenomenon in the copper interconnect after the first loading cycle. This should reduce or eliminate the pulling of the copper interconnect on the joint where it is welded to the silicon solar cell. It is concluded that the actual fatigue life of the solar array blanket assembly should be significantly higher than the calculated 92,000 cycles, and thus the program requirement of 87,500 cycles (orbits) will be met. Another important conclusion that can be drawn from the overall analysis is that, the strain results obtained from the MSC/NASTRAN nonlinear module are accurate to use for low-cycle fatigue analysis, since both thermal cycle testing of solar cells and analysis have shown higher fatigue life than the minimum program requirement of 87,500 cycles
Automated Grain Yield Behavior Classification
A method for classifying grain stress evolution behaviors using unsupervised learning techniques is presented. The method is applied to analyze grain stress histories measured in-situ using high-energy X-ray diffraction microscopy (HEDM) from the aluminum-lithium alloy Al-Li 2099 at the elastic-plastic transition (yield). The unsupervised learning process automatically classified the grain stress histories into four groups: major softening, no work-hardening or softening, moderate work-hardening, and major work-hardening. The orientation and spatial dependence of these four groups are discussed. In addition, the generality of the classification process to other samples is explored

Electrical, thermal, and phase-transformation mechanisms are considered to produce a physically realistic description of this new approach to ultrahigh-density data storage. Models developed are applied to the design of a suitable storage layer stack with the necessary electrical, thermal, and tribological properties to support recorded bits of nanometric scale. The detailed structure of nanoscale crystalline and amorphous bits is also predicted. For an optimized trilayer stack comprising Ge2Sb2Te5 sandwiched by amorphous or diamond-like carbon layers, crystalline bits were roughly trapezoidal in shape while amorphous bits were semi-ellipsoidal. In both cases, the energy required to write individual bits was very low (of the order of a few hundred picoJoules). Amorphous marks could be directly overwritten (erased), but crystalline bits could not. Readout performance was investigated by calculating the readout current as the tip scanned over isolated bits and bit patterns of increasing density. The highest readout contrast was generated by isolated crystalline bits in an amorphous matrix, but the narrowest readout pulses arose from isolated amorphous marks in a crystalline background. To assess the ultimate density capability of electrical probe recording the role of write-induced intersymbol interference and the thermodynamic stability of nanoscale marks were also studied
New HST Observations of the Halo Gas of NGC 3067: Limits on the Extragalactic Ionizing Background at Low Redshift and the Lyman Continuum Escape Fraction
We present UV spectroscopy from HST/GHRS and reanalyze existing H_alpha
images of the quasar/galaxy pair 3C 232/NGC 3067 and of the halo gas associated
with NGC 3067. The spectra permit measurement of, or limits on, the column
densities of Fe I, Fe II, Mg I, and Mg II in the absorbing cloud. Two distinct
models of the extragalactic radiation field are considered: (1) the ionizing
spectrum is dominated by a power-law extragalactic continuum, and (2) the
power-law spectrum contains a Lyman break, implying enhanced flux longward of
912 A relative to the hydrogen-ionizing flux. The H_alpha images constrain the
escape fraction of Lyman continuum photons from the galaxy to f_esc <= 0.02.
With the assumption that the cloud is shielded from all galactic contributions,
we can constrain the intensity and shape of the extragalactic continuum. For an
AGN-dominated power-law extragalactic spectrum, we derive a limit on the
extragalactic ionizing flux Phi_ion >= 2600 photons cm^-2 s^-1, or I_0 >=
10^-23 erg cm^-2 s^-1 Hz^-1 sr^-1 for an ionizing spectrum with power-law index
of 1.8 and a cloud of constant density. When combined with previous upper
limits from the absence of H_alpha recombination emission from intergalactic
clouds, our observations require 2600 <= Phi_ion <= 10000 photons cm^-2 s^-1.
We show that if galactic contributions to the incident radiation are important,
it is difficult to constrain Phi_ion. These results demonstrate that galactic
halo opacities and their wavelength dependence are crucial to understanding the

Upper Limits on the Extragalactic Background Light from the Gamma-Ray Spectra of Blazars
The direct measurement of the extragalactic background light (EBL) is
difficult at optical to infrared wavelengths because of the strong foreground
radiation originating in the Solar System. Very high energy (VHE, E100 GeV)
gamma rays interact with EBL photons of these wavelengths through pair
production. In this work, the available VHE spectra from six blazars are used
to place upper limits on the EBL. These blazars have been detected over a range
of redshifts and a steepening of the spectral index is observed with increasing
source distance. This can be interpreted as absorption by the EBL. In general,
knowledge of the intrinsic source spectrum is necessary to determine the
density of the intervening EBL. Motivated by the observed spectral steepening
with redshift, upper limits on the EBL are derived by assuming that the
intrinsic spectra of the six blazars are . Upper limits are
then placed on the EBL flux at discrete energies without assuming a specific
spectral shape for the EBL. This is an advantage over other methods since the

Massive Increase, Spread, and Exchange of Extended Spectrum {beta}-Lactamase-Encoding Genes Among Intestinal Enterobacteriaceae in Hospitalized Children With Severe Acute Malnutrition in Niger.
Background. From the time of CTX-M emergence, extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing enterobacteria (ESBL-E) have spread worldwide in community settings as well as in hospitals, particularly in developing countries. Although their dissemination appears linked to Escherichia coli intestinal carriage, precise paths of this dynamic are largely unknown. Methods. Children from a pediatric renutrition center were prospectively enrolled in a fecal carriage study. Antibiotic exposure was recorded. ESBL-E strains were isolated using selective media from fecal samples obtained at admission and, when negative, also at discharge. ESBL-encoding genes were identified, their environments and plasmids were characterized, and clonality was assessed with polymerase chain reaction-based methods and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis for E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. E. coli strains were subjected to multilocus sequence typing. Results. The ESBL-E carriage rate was 31% at admission in the 55 children enrolled. All children enrolled received antibiotics during hospitalization. Among the ESBL-E-negative children, 16 were resampled at discharge, and the acquisition rate was 94%. The bla(CTX-M-15) gene was found in >90% of the carriers. Genetic environments and plasmid characterization evidenced the roles of a worldwide, previously described, multidrug-resistant region and of IncF plasmids in CTX-M-15 E. coli dissemination. Diversity of CTX-M-15-carrying genetic structures and clonality of acquired ESBL E. coli suggested horizontal genetic transfer and underlined the potential of some ST types for nosocomial cross-transmission. Conclusions. Cross-transmission and high selective pressure lead to very high acquisition of ESBL-E carriage, contributing to dissemination in the community. Strict hygiene measures as well as careful balancing of benefit-risk ratio of current antibiotic policies need to be reevaluated
Microbiological aspects of methane emission in a ricefield soil from the Camargue (France) : 2. Methanotrophy and related microflora
Les principaux facteurs qui influencent l'activité méthanotrophe du sol (épaisseur du sol, humidité, addition d'engrais et dessiccation) ont été étudiés in vitro sur un sol de rizière de Camargue (France) afin de standardiser une méthode pour estimer l'activité méthanotrophe potentielle (PMA) d'un sol. La possibilité d'énumérer les méthanotrophes du sol a été étudiée et les souches dominantes du sol incubé pendant un mois sous un mélange de 80% air/20% CH4 ont été isolées. La méthanotrophie in vitro est un phénomène quantifiable par unité de surface plutôt que par unité de poids de sol. L'activité maximale (PMA)(1.8 mole m-2 j-1) a été mesurée sur un échantillon à une humidité voisine de la capacité au champ et incubé pendant un mois sous air/CH4. Les consommations de CH4 et d'O2 ainsi que la production de CO2 sont fortement corrélées. La consommation d'O2 liée à l'activité hétérotrophe du sol est négligeable comparée à celle due à l'activité méthanotrophe. L'addition d'engrais à des concentrations utilisées en agriculture est sans effet sur la PMA qui est restée stable pendant deux ans dans le sol conservé à l'état sec. Une très forte contamination rend les étalements sur boites de Pétri inexploitables pour dénombrer les bactéries méthanotrophes du sol. Les populations estimées par MPN sont faibles dans le sol sec (2.5 x 102 g-1) et atteignent 5 x 108 g-1 dans le sol enrichi. La morphologie des souches isolées indique leur appartenance aux bactéries méthanotrophes de type II. (Résumé d'auteur
Classical Loop Actions of Gauge Theories
Since the first attempts to quantize Gauge Theories and Gravity in the loop
representation, the problem of the determination of the corresponding classical
actions has been raised. Here we propose a general procedure to determine these
actions and we explicitly apply it in the case of electromagnetism. Going to
the lattice we show that the electromagnetic action in terms of loops is
equivalent to the Wilson action, allowing to do Montecarlo calculations in a
gauge invariant way. In the continuum these actions need to be regularized and
they are the natural candidates to describe the theory in a ``confining
