Pathophysiological role of extrasynaptic GABAA receptors in typical absence epilepsy
GABA is the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian CNS. It acts via two classes of receptors, the GABAA, a ligand gated ion channel (ionotropic receptor) and the metabotropic G-protein coupled GABAB receptor. While synaptic GABAA receptors underlie classical ‘phasic’ GABAA receptor-mediated inhibition, extrasynaptic GABAA receptors (eGABAAR) mediate a new form of inhibition, termed ‘tonic’ GABAA inhibition. The subunit composition of eGABAARs differs from those present at the synapse, resulting in pharmacologically and functionally distinct properties. In this mini-review the findings presented at the 2nd Neuroscience Day meeting held last July in Malta will be summarised. Particular emphasis will be given to the important pathophysiological role of eGABAAR within thalamocortical circuits as a major player in nonconvulsive absence epilepsy. The new findings presented at the conference suggest that enhanced tonic inhibition is a common cause of seizures in several animal models of absence epilepsy and may provide new targets for therapeutic intervention.peer-reviewe
The Impact of Foreign Interest Rates on the Economy: The Role of the Exchange Rate Regime
It is often argued that small economies are affected by conditions in large countries. This paper explores the connection between interest rates in major industrial countries and annual real output growth in other countries. The results show that high large-country interest rates have a contractionary effect on annual real GDP growth in the domestic economy, but that this effect is centered on countries with fixed exchange rates. The paper then examines the potential channels through which large-country interest rates affect small economies. The direct monetary policy channel is the most likely channel when compared with other possibilities, such as a general capital market effect or a trade effect.
Community Development and Social Participation
The paper presents the reslt of the action research project issued in Palermo (Southern Italy), in disadvantaged urban suburbs, methodologically based on Kurt Lewin's field theory - that is a three-step spiral process of planning which involves recoinnaissance; talking actions; and fact-finding about the results of the action - in order to develop the social participation and the social change. The principal aim of the project was the empowerment of participants, obtaining their collaboration through participation, giving them acquisition of knowledge for a real social change
MicroRNA and Cardiac Stem Cell Therapy
Cardiac Progenitor Cells (CPCs) are multipotent cells of the myocardium. They are located inside niches of the heart muscle, can be isolated, characterized and used for cardiac regeneration in stem cell therapy. Actually, CPCs may be isolated by tissue digestion with or without cell sorting, but it is difficult to achieve the maximum level of differentiation when these cells are implanted into a damaged myocardium.
The knowledge recently acquired on small molecules of non-coding RNAs, microRNA (miRNA), may improve the use of these cells in stem cell therapy. In fact, these small molecules may be attached to devices or adminstered as they are or in combination with nanoparticles in order to drive the correct differentiation of stem cells. Regarding heart regeneration, we can acquire knowledge from the role of miRNAs in heart development and use it to reprogram CPCs to gain the correct three-dimensional structure of the cardiac muscle

Experimental Test of Two-way Quantum Key Distribution in Presence of Controlled Noise
We describe the experimental test of a quantum key distribution performed
with a two-way protocol without using entanglement. An individual incoherent
eavesdropping is simulated and induces a variable amount of noise on the
communication channel. This allows a direct verification of the agreement

L’utilizzo delle protesi endoscopiche nella patologia dell’apparato digerente
L’utilizzo di protesi ad introduzione per via endoscopica per patologie dell’apparato digerente sia benigne che maligne ha avuto negli ultimi anni un considerevole sviluppo. Il posizionamento delle endoprotesi è ben tollerato dai pazienti, non necessita di anestesia e comporta rischi relativamente minimi. Le nuove protesi metalliche autoespansibili permettono di risolvere stenosi anche molto serrate senza quasi mai necessità di dilatazione, con riduzione dei rischi che da questa derivano. Viene riportata una revisione dell’esperienza di protesizzazione per patologie dell’apparato digerente e vengono discussi le indicazioni, i limiti e le complicanze, sulla scorta dei dati dalla letteratura internazionale
