Approaching the Sacred in Chinese past Contexts
Die konzeptionelle Trennung von Glauben und Wissen ist irreführend und sollte dementsprechend ebenso wenig als methodologische Grundlage dienen wie die Dichotomisierung von heilig und säkular, davon zeugen neueste Forschungsbefunde mit Blick auf die Geschichte von Pilgern und Heilige Orte im chinesischen Kontext. Der vorliegende Beitrag fokussiert Berge, weil ohne sie keine Diskussion um das Heilige in China möglich ist. Mit Blick auf konkrete Praktiken, die auf die Kultivierung des Selbst abzielen und durchgängig mit körperlicher Einleibung (Embodiment) von Vorstellungen des Heiligen verquickt sind, sucht der Beitrag die Frage zu beantworten, auf welche Weise Menschen ihre eigene Begegnung mit dem Heiligen erzählen. Die Berge dienten als Orte kaiserlicher Ritualhandlungen, sie waren und sind mit Mystik, Natur, Geschichte, Leben, Fruchtbarkeit und Tod verbunden, und als Orte konfuzianischer, buddhistischer und daoistischer Verehrung dienten sie Gelehrten als Projektsmöglichkeit ihres Selbst in die Zukunft hinein
Managing at the Speed of Light: Improving Mission-Support Performance
The House and Senate Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittees requested this study to help DOE's three major mission-support organizations improve their operations to better meet the current and future needs of the department. The passage of the Recovery Act only increased the importance of having DOE's mission-support offices working in the most effective, efficient, and timely manner as possible. While following rules and regulations is essential, the foremost task of the mission-support offices is to support the department's mission, i.e., the programs that DOE is implementing, whether in Washington D.C. or in the field. As a result, the Panel offered specific recommendations to strengthen the mission-focus and improve the management of each of the following support functions based on five "management mandates":- Strategic Vision- Leadership- Mission and Customer Service Orientation- Tactical Implementation- Agility/AdaptabilityKey FindingsThe Panel made several recommendations in each of the functional areas examined and some overarching recommendations for the corporate management of the mission-support offices that they believed would result in significant improvements to DOE's mission-support operations. The Panel believed that adopting these recommendations will not only make DOE a better functioning organization, but that most of them are essential if DOE is to put its very large allocation of Recovery Act funding to its intended uses as quickly as possible
Not ‘Islands, Entire of Themselves’: Exploring the Spatial Context of City-level Robbery Rates
The current study examines spatial dependence in robbery rates for a sample of 1,056 cities with 25,000 or more residents over the 2000–2003 period. Although commonly considered in some macro-level research, spatial processes have not been examined in relation to city-level variation in robbery. The results of our regression analyses suggest that city robbery rates are not spatially independent. We find that spatial dependence is better accounted for by spatial error models than by spatial lag models. Further exploration of various spatial weights matrices indicates that robbery rates of cities within the same state are related to robbery rates of other cities within the same state, regardless of their proximity. Our analyses illustrate how systematic inquiry into spatial processes can alert researchers to important omitted variable biases and identify intriguing problems for future research

Field responsive mechanical metamaterials.
Typically, mechanical metamaterial properties are programmed and set when the architecture is designed and constructed, and do not change in response to shifting environmental conditions or application requirements. We present a new class of architected materials called field responsive mechanical metamaterials (FRMMs) that exhibit dynamic control and on-the-fly tunability enabled by careful design and selection of both material composition and architecture. To demonstrate the FRMM concept, we print complex structures composed of polymeric tubes infilled with magnetorheological fluid suspensions. Modulating remotely applied magnetic fields results in rapid, reversible, and sizable changes of the effective stiffness of our metamaterial motifs
Learning masculinities in a Japanese high school rugby club
This paper draws on research conducted on a Tokyo high school rugby club to explore diversity in the masculinities formed through membership in the club. Based on the premise that particular forms of masculinity are expressed and learnt through ways of playing (game style) and the attendant regimes of training, it examines the expression and learning of masculinities at three analytic levels. It identifies a hegemonic, culture-specific form of masculinity operating in Japanese high school rugby, a class-influenced variation of it at the institutional level of the school and, by further tightening its analytic focus, further variation at an individual level. In doing so this paper highlights the ways in which diversity in the masculinities constructed through contact sports can be obfuscated by a reductionist view of there being only one, universal hegemonic patterns of masculinity

LUX -- A Laser-Plasma Driven Undulator Beamline
The LUX beamline is a novel type of laser-plasma accelerator. Building on the
joint expertise of the University of Hamburg and DESY the beamline was
carefully designed to combine state-of-the-art expertise in laser-plasma
acceleration with the latest advances in accelerator technology and beam
diagnostics. LUX introduces a paradigm change moving from single-shot
demonstration experiments towards available, stable and controllable
accelerator operation. Here, we discuss the general design concepts of LUX and
present first critical milestones that have recently been achieved, including
the generation of electron beams at the repetition rate of up to 5 Hz with
energies above 600 MeV and the generation of spontaneous undulator radiation at
a wavelength well below 9 nm.Comment: submitte
'It's a Form of Freedom': The experiences of people with disabilities within equestrian sport
This paper explores the embodied, gendered experiences of disabled horse‐riders. Drawing on data from five in‐depth interviews with paradressage riders, the ways in which their involvement in elite disability sport impacts upon their sense of identity and confidence are explored, as well as the considerable health and social benefits that this involvement brings. Social models of disability are employed and the shortcomings of such models, when applied to disability sport, are highlighted. The data presented here demonstrates the necessity of seeing disability sport as an embodied experience and acknowledging the importance of impairment to the experiences of disabled athletes. Living within an impaired body is also a gendered experience and the implications of this when applied to elite disability sport are considered
A BIM-based theoretical framework for the integration of the asset End-of-Life phase
Due to the migration of industry from the use of traditional 2D CAD tools to Building Information Modelling (BIM) process, and the growing awareness of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste issues, researchers are interested in compiling the use of BIM for C&D Waste issues. BIM is commonly used for the Design, Construction and Maintenance phases of an asset; however, the use of BIM for the End-of-Life management is still in its infancy. This paper proposes to reconsider the asset lifecycle by incorporating a sustainable End-of-Life, as a phase, in BIM context. Recommendations are given to push the BIM potential up to the asset End-of-Life management. Based on the results of a literature review assessing the current use of BIM for the asset End-of-Life, a conceptual framework was drawn. A set of eleven stakeholders, involved in the asset lifecycle, from inception to deconstruction were interviewed to improve the conceptual framework. The research reveals the impacts and barriers for the integration of the deconstruction phase into the asset lifecycle. Consequently, a theoretical framework for the asset lifecycle from inception to deconstruction in BIM environment is created to change the linear system to a circular economy.Peer reviewe
Sexual harassment and abuse in sport: The research context
This special issue of the Journal of Sexual Aggression draws on the contributions to a Symposium on ‘Sexual Harassment in Sport – Challenges for Sport Psychology in the New Millennium’, held at the Xth Congress of the International Society for Sport Psychology, Skiathos, Greece from May 28th to June 2nd 2001. The symposium, which was organised by the authors of this editorial, was intended to move forward the international research agenda on sexual harassment and abuse in sport and to examine professional practice issues for sport psychologists. It was clear from the attendance of over 60 delegates at that symposium that international interest in this subject is growing. Further evidence of this came from the attendance of 26 members states – from Azerbaijan to Sweden - at a Council of Europe seminar on The Protection of Children, Young People and Women in Sport, held in Helsinki in September 2001
