Models of quintessence coupled to the electromagnetic field and the cosmological evolution of alpha
We study the change of the effective fine structure constant in the
cosmological models of a scalar field with a non-vanishing coupling to the
electromagnetic field. Combining cosmological data and terrestrial observations
we place empirical constraints on the size of the possible coupling and explore
a large class of models that exhibit tracking behavior. The change of the fine
structure constant implied by the quasar absorption spectra together with the
requirement of tracking behavior impose a lower bound of the size of this
coupling. Furthermore, the transition to the quintessence regime implies a
narrow window for this coupling around in units of the inverse Planck
mass. We also propose a non-minimal coupling between electromagnetism and
quintessence which has the effect of leading only to changes of alpha
determined from atomic physics phenomena, but leaving no observable
consequences through nuclear physics effects. In doing so we are able to
reconcile the claimed cosmological evidence for a changing fine structure
constant with the tight constraints emerging from the Oklo natural nuclear

Leptogenesis through direct inflaton decay to light particles
We present a scenario of nonthermal leptogenesis following supersymmetric
hybrid inflation, in the case where inflaton decay to both heavy right handed
neutrino and SU(2)_L triplet superfields is kinematically disallowed. Lepton
asymmetry is generated through the decay of the inflaton into light particles
by the interference of one-loop diagrams with right handed neutrino and SU(2)_L
triplet exchange respectively. We require superpotential couplings explicitly
violating a U(1) R-symmetry and R-parity. However, the broken R-parity need not
have currently observable low-energy signatures. Also, the lightest sparticle
can be stable. Some R-parity violating slepton decays may, though, be
detectable in the future colliders. We take into account the constraints from
neutrino masses and mixing and the preservation of the primordial lepton

Leptogenesis from a sneutrino condensate revisited
We re--examine leptogenesis from a right--handed sneutrino condensate, paying
special attention to the term associated with the see--saw Majorana mass.
This term generates a lepton asymmetry in the condensate whose time average
vanishes. However, a net asymmetry will result if the sneutrino lifetime is not
much longer than the period of oscillations. Supersymmetry breaking by thermal
effects then yields a lepton asymmetry in the standard model sector after the
condensate decays. We explore different possibilities by taking account of both
the low--energy and Hubble terms. It will be shown that the desired baryon

A First Search for coincident Gravitational Waves and High Energy Neutrinos using LIGO, Virgo and ANTARES data from 2007
We present the results of the first search for gravitational wave bursts
associated with high energy neutrinos. Together, these messengers could reveal
new, hidden sources that are not observed by conventional photon astronomy,
particularly at high energy. Our search uses neutrinos detected by the
underwater neutrino telescope ANTARES in its 5 line configuration during the
period January - September 2007, which coincided with the fifth and first
science runs of LIGO and Virgo, respectively. The LIGO-Virgo data were analysed
for candidate gravitational-wave signals coincident in time and direction with
the neutrino events. No significant coincident events were observed. We place
limits on the density of joint high energy neutrino - gravitational wave
emission events in the local universe, and compare them with densities of

Journeying through dementia randomised controlled trial of a psychosocial intervention for people living with early dementia: embedded qualitative study with participants, carers and interventionists
Objective: To identify the barriers and facilitators to the implementation of a complex psychosocial intervention though a study exploring the experiences of participants, carers and interventionists during a trial.
Methods: Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants, their carers, and interventionists from a sample of recruiting sites that took part in the Journeying through Dementia randomized controlled trial (RCT). Interview data were transcribed and analysed using framework analysis. Co-researcher data analysis workshops were also conducted to explore researcher interpretations of the data through the lens of those with lived experience of dementia. Triangulation enabled comparison of findings from the interviews with findings from the co-researcher workshops.
Results: Three main themes emerged from the interview data: being prepared; intervention engagement; and participation and outcomes from engagement. From these themes, a number of factors that can moderate delivery and receipt of the intervention as intended were identified. These were context and environment; readiness, training, skills and competencies of the workforce; identifying meaningful participation and relationships.
Conclusion: This study highlighted that the observed benefit of the intervention was nuanced for each individual. Mechanisms of change were influenced by a range of individual, social and contextual factors. Future research should therefore consider how best to identify and measure the multifaceted interplay of mechanisms of change in complex interventions.
