Nonlinear elasticity of stiff biopolymers connected by flexible linkers
Networks of the biopolymer actin, cross-linked by the compliant protein filamin, form soft gels. They can, however, withstand large shear stresses due to their pronounced nonlinear elastic behavior. The nonlinear elasticity can be controlled by varying the number of cross-links per actin filament. We propose and test a model of rigid filaments decorated by multiple flexible linkers that is in quantitative agreement with experiment. This allows us to estimate loads on individual cross-links, which we find to be less than 10 pN. © 2009 The American Physical Society
Diffusion in an Expanding Plasma using AdS/CFT
We consider the diffusion of a non-relativistic heavy quark of fixed mass M,
in a one-dimensionally expanding and strongly coupled plasma using the AdS/CFT
duality. The Green's function constructed around a static string embedded in a
background with a moving horizon, is identified with the noise correlation
function in a Langevin approach. The (electric) noise decorrelation is of order
1/T(\tau) while the velocity de-correlation is of order MD(\tau)/T(\tau). For
MD>1, the diffusion regime is segregated and the energy loss is Langevin-like.
The time dependent diffusion constant D(\tau) asymptotes its adiabatic limit
2/\pi\sqrt{\lambda} T(\tau) when \tau/\tau_0=(1/3\eta_0\tau_0)^3 where \eta_0
is the drag coefficient at the initial proper time \tau_0.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures, minor corrections, version to appear in JHE
One-Loop Effect of Null-Like Cosmology's Holographic Dual Super-Yang-Mills
We calculate the 1-loop effect in super-Yang-Mills which preserves
1/4-supersymmetries and is holographically dual to the null-like cosmology with
a big-bang singularity. Though the bosonic and fermionic spectra do not agree
precisely, we do obtain vanishing 1-loop vacuum energy for generic warped
plane-wave type backgrounds with a big-bang singularity. Moreover, we find that
the cosmological "constant" contributed either by bosons or fermions is
time-dependent. The issues about the particle production of some background and
about the UV structure are also commented. We argue that the effective higher
derivative interactions are suppressed as long as the Fourier transform of the
time-dependent coupling is UV-finite. Our result holds for scalar
configurations that are BPS but with arbitrary time-dependence. This suggests
the existence of non-renormalization theorem for such a new class of
time-dependent theories. Altogether, it implies that such a super-Yang-Mills is
scale-invariant, and that its dual bulk quantum gravity might behave regularly
near the big bang.Comment: 20 pages, v2 add comments and references, v3 clarify BPS condition &

Properties of some conformal field theories with M-theory duals
By studying classes of supersymmetric solutions of D=11 supergravity with
AdS_5 factors, we determine some properties of the dual four-dimensional N=1
superconformal field theories. For some explicit solutions we calculate the
central charges and also the conformal dimensions of certain chiral primary
operators arising from wrapped membranes. For the most general class of
solutions we show that there is a consistent Kaluza-Klein truncation to minimal
D=5 gauged supergravity. This latter result allows us to study some aspects of
the dual strongly coupled thermal plasma with a non-zero R-charge chemical
potential and, in particular, we show that the ratio of the shear viscosity to
the entropy density has the universal value of 1/4 pi.Comment: Consistent truncation extended to include fermions. Reference added.

NMR Time Reversal Experiments in Highly Polarised Liquid 3He-4He Mixtures
Long-range magnetic interactions in highly magnetised liquids
(laser-polarised 3He-4He dilute mixtures at 1 K in our experiment) introduce a
significant non-linear and non-local contribution to the evolution of nuclear
magnetisation that leads to instabilities during free precession. We recently
demonstrated that a multi-echo NMR sequence, based on the magic sandwich pulse
scheme developed for solid-state NMR, can be used to stabilise the
magnetisation against the effect of distant dipolar fields. Here, we report
investigations of echo attenuation in an applied field gradient that show the
potential of this NMR sequence for spin diffusion measurements at high
magnetisation densities.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of Low Temperature Physic
Baryon Binding Energy in Sakai-Sugimoto Model
The binding energy of baryon has been studied in the dual
string theory with a black hole interior. In this picture baryon is constructed
of a brane vertex wrapping on and fundamental strings
connected to it. Here, we calculate the baryon binding energy in Sakai-Sugimoto
model with a in which the supersymmetry is completely
broken. Also we check the dependence of the baryon binding energy. We
believe that this model represents an accurate description of baryons due to
the existence of Chern-Simones coupling with the gauge field on the brane. We
obtain an analytical expression for the baryon binding energy . In that case we
plot the baryon binding energy in terms of radial coordinate. Then by using the
binding energy diagram, we determine the stability range for baryon
configuration. And also the position and energy of the stable equilibrium point
is obtained by the corresponding diagram. Also we plot the baryon binding
energy in terms of temperature and estimate a critical temperature in which the
baryon would be dissociated.Comment: 14 pages, 1 fi
Quasi-Isotropization of the Inhomogeneous Mixmaster Universe Induced by an Inflationary Process
We derive a ``generic'' inhomogeneous ``bridge'' solution for a cosmological
model in the presence of a real self-interacting scalar field. This solution
connects a Kasner-like regime to an inflationary stage of evolution and
therefore provides a dynamical mechanism for the quasi-isotropization of the
universe. In the framework of a standard Arnowitt-Deser-Misner Hamiltonian
formulation of the dynamics and by adopting Misner-Chitr\`e-like variables, we
integrate the Einstein-Hamilton-Jacobi equation corresponding to a ``generic''
inhomogeneous cosmological model whose evolution is influenced by the coupling
with a bosonic field, expected to be responsible for a spontaneous symmetry
breaking configuration. The dependence of the detailed evolution of the
universe on the initial conditions is then appropriately characterized.Comment: 17 pages, no figure, to appear on PR
Non-relativistic CFT and Semi-classical Strings
We study different features of 3D non-relativistic CFT using gravity
description. As the corresponding gravity solution can be embedded into the
type IIB string theory, we study semi-classical closed/open strings in this
background. In particular we consider folded rotating and circular pulsating
closed strings where we find the anomalous dimension of the dual operators as a
function of their quantum numbers. We also consider moving open strings in this
background which can be used to compute the drag force. In particular we find
that for slowly moving particles, the energy is lost exponentially and the
characteristic time is given in terms of the temperature, while for fast moving
particles the energy loss goes as inverse of the time and the characteristic
time is independent of the temperature.Comment: 20 pages, Latex file; V2: typos corrected, ref. adde
Two charged strangeonium-like structures observable in the process
Via the Initial Single Pion Emission (ISPE) mechanism, we study the
invariant mass spectrum distribution of . Our calculation indicates there exist a sharp peak
structure () close to the threshold and a broad
structure () near the threshold. In addition, we
also investigate the process due to
the ISPE mechanism, where a sharp peak around the threshold
appears in the invariant mass spectrum distribution. We
suggest to carry out the search for these charged strangeonium-like structures
in future experiment, especially Belle II, Super-B and BESIII.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Accepted by Eur. Phys. J.
Development of prefabricated retrofit module towards nearly zero energy buildings
The building sector is an energy intensive sector, with great potential to reduce energy needs and environmental pollution. Several measures are being taken to increase the energy efficiency and avoid energy consumption in this sector. A recent trend is the nearly zero energy buildings, which was already adopted by some of the latest regulations, such as the 2010 recast of the European Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). However, to reach these goals, especially considering the existing building stock, new retrofit solutions are required, which must be well adapted to the specific building stock needs, and ensure that the building retrofit can achieve the nearly zero energy buildings standards. This paper presents a new prefabricated retrofit module solution for the facades of existing buildings, and also the steps taken to optimise its performance, which includes a judicious choice of materials, 3D modelling, cost–benefit analysis, use of different simulation tools for performance optimisation and prototyping. It is also shown the implementation of the retrofit module within an integrated retrofit approach, whose final goal was to obtain a building with the minimum possible energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This work was supported by ERDF funds through the Competitiveness Factors Operational Programme - COMPETE and National Funds through FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology [project number FCOMP-01-0124-FEDER-007189].
