Experimental magic state distillation for fault-tolerant quantum computing
Any physical quantum device for quantum information processing is subject to
errors in implementation. In order to be reliable and efficient, quantum
computers will need error correcting or error avoiding methods. Fault-tolerance
achieved through quantum error correction will be an integral part of quantum
computers. Of the many methods that have been discovered to implement it, a
highly successful approach has been to use transversal gates and specific
initial states. A critical element for its implementation is the availability
of high-fidelity initial states such as |0> and the Magic State. Here we report
an experiment, performed in a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum
processor, showing sufficient quantum control to improve the fidelity of
imperfect initial magic states by distilling five of them into one with higher
fidelity
Older adults experiences of rehabilitation in acute health care
Rehabilitation is a key component of nursing and allied healthcare professionals’ roles in most health and social care settings. This paper reports on stage 2 of an action research project to ascertain older adult's experience of rehabilitation. Twenty postdischarge interviews were conducted and the interview transcripts were analysed using thematic content analysis. All older adults discharged from an acute older acute rehabilitation ward to their own homes in the community were eligible to participate. The only exclusion criterion was older adults who were thought to be unable to give consent to participate by the nurse in charge and the researcher. Whilst 92 older adults were eligible to participate in this research study, only 20 were interviewed. The findings from this study suggest that older adults valued communication with health professionals but were aware of their time constraints that hindered communication. This study suggests that both nurses and allied health professionals are not actively providing rehabilitative services to promote health and well-being, which contradicts the focus of active ageing. Furthermore, there was evidence of unmet needs on discharge, and older adults unable to recall the professions that were involved in their interventions and the rationale for therapy input. It is suggested that further research is needed to explore the effectiveness of allied health rehabilitation in the acute setting. This study highlights the need for further research into older adults’ perceptions of the rehabilitation process in the acute setting
Exact ground states for the four-electron problem in a two-dimensional finite Hubbard square system
We present exact explicit analytical results describing the exact ground
state of four electrons in a two dimensional square Hubbard cluster containing
16 sites taken with periodic boundary conditions. The presented procedure,
which works for arbitrary even particle number and lattice sites, is based on
explicitly given symmetry adapted base vectors constructed in r-space. The
Hamiltonian acting on these states generates a closed system of 85 linear
equations providing by its minimum eigenvalue the exact ground state of the
system. The presented results, described with the aim to generate further
creative developments, not only show how the ground state can be exactly
obtained and what kind of contributions enter in its construction, but
emphasize further characteristics of the spectrum. On this line i) possible
explications are found regarding why weak coupling expansions often provide a
good approximation for the Hubbard model at intermediate couplings, or ii)
explicitly given low lying energy states of the kinetic energy, avoiding double
occupancy, suggest new roots for pairing mechanism attracting decrease in the
kinetic energy, as emphasized by kinetic energy driven superconductivity

The kinases MSK1 and MSK2 act as negative regulators of Toll-like receptor signaling
The kinases MSK1 and MSK2 are activated 'downstream' of the p38 and Erk1/2 mitogen-activated protein kinases. Here we found that MSK1 and MSK2 were needed to limit the production of proinflammatory cytokines in response to stimulation of primary macrophages with lipopolysaccharide. By inducing transcription of the mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphatase DUSP1 and the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin 10, MSK1 and MSK2 exerted many negative feedback mechanisms. Deficiency in MSK1 and MSK2 prevented the binding of phosphorylated transcription factors CREB and ATF1 to the promoters of the genes encoding interleukin 10 and DUSP1. Mice doubly deficient in MSK1 and MSK2 were hypersensitive to lipopolysaccharide-induced endotoxic shock and showed prolonged inflammation in a model of toxic contact eczema induced by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate. Our results establish MSK1 and MSK2 as key components of negative feedback mechanisms needed to limit Toll-like receptor-driven inflammation.</p

Fruit fracture biomechanics and the release of Lepidium didymum pericarp-imposed mechanical dormancy by fungi
Mechanical dormancy imposed by a hard fruit pericarp prevents premature seed germination. Here, the authors show that the pericarp of Lepidium didymum prevents germination by limiting water uptake and that dormancy can be released by fungal activity that weakens predetermined breaking zones in the fruit coat
Seasonal controls on deposition of Late Devensian glaciolacustrine sediments, Central ireland: Implications for the construction of a varve chronology for the British-Irish ice sheet
Laminated pro-glacial glaciolacustrine sediments dating from the Late Devensian (22-10,000 bp) from central Ireland were examined using a combination of detailed logging and scanning electron microscope surface texture and fabric analyses. The sediments are rhythmically laminated and consist of coarser, pale silt layers which alternate with darker clay layers containing occasional thin laminae of fine sand and coarse silt. The pale silt layers contain grains with surface textures indicative of a combination of fluvial, glacial and aeolian transport and contain single or multiple normally graded laminae, erosional surfaces and soft sediment deformation structures, indicating deposition from multiple high density underflows, with occasional dumping of wind-blown sediment into the lake. The dark clay layers have sharp upper and lower contacts and an internal fabric consistent with deposition from a combination of flocculation and grain-by-grain deposition. The thin laminae of coarser material have surface textures consistent with subglacial and fluvial transport only and are interpreted as underflows from subglacial discharges. The sediments are interpreted as annually laminated (varved)
Low potency toxins reveal dense interaction networks in metabolism
Background
The chemicals of metabolism are constructed of a small set of atoms and bonds. This may be because chemical structures outside the chemical space in which life operates are incompatible with biochemistry, or because mechanisms to make or utilize such excluded structures has not evolved. In this paper I address the extent to which biochemistry is restricted to a small fraction of the chemical space of possible chemicals, a restricted subset that I call Biochemical Space. I explore evidence that this restriction is at least in part due to selection again specific structures, and suggest a mechanism by which this occurs.
Results
Chemicals that contain structures that our outside Biochemical Space (UnBiological groups) are more likely to be toxic to a wide range of organisms, even though they have no specifically toxic groups and no obvious mechanism of toxicity. This correlation of UnBiological with toxicity is stronger for low potency (millimolar) toxins. I relate this to the observation that most chemicals interact with many biological structures at low millimolar toxicity. I hypothesise that life has to select its components not only to have a specific set of functions but also to avoid interactions with all the other components of life that might degrade their function.
Conclusions
The chemistry of life has to form a dense, self-consistent network of chemical structures, and cannot easily be arbitrarily extended. The toxicity of arbitrary chemicals is a reflection of the disruption to that network occasioned by trying to insert a chemical into it without also selecting all the other components to tolerate that chemical. This suggests new ways to test for the toxicity of chemicals, and that engineering organisms to make high concentrations of materials such as chemical precursors or fuels may require more substantial engineering than just of the synthetic pathways involved

Humans and fire: changing relations in early agricultural and built environments in the Zagros, Iran, Iraq
Fire-centred studies have recently been highlighted as powerful avenues for investigation of energy flows and relations between humans, materials, environments and other species. The aim in this paper is to evaluate this potential first by reviewing the diverse theories and methods that can be applied to investigate the ecological and social significance of anthropogenic fire, and second by applying these to new and existing data sets in archaeology. This paper examines how fire-centred approaches can inform on one of the most significant step-changes in human lifeways and inter-relations with environment and other species – the transition from mobile hunting-gathering to more sedentary agriculture in a key heartland of change, the Zagros region of Iraq and Iran, c. 12,000–8,000 BP. In the review and case studies multiple links are investigated between human fire use and environment, ecology, energy use, technology, the built environment, health, social roles and relations, cultural practices and catastrophic event
Modulation of the peripheral blood transcriptome by the ingestion of probiotic yoghurt and acidified milk in healthy, young men
The metabolic health benefits of fermented milks have already been investigated using clinical biomarkers but the development of transcriptomic analytics in blood offers an alternative approach that may help to sensitively characterise such effects. We aimed to assess the effects of probiotic yoghurt intake, compared to non-fermented, acidified milk intake, on clinical biomarkers and gene expression in peripheral blood. To this end, a randomised, crossover study was conducted in fourteen healthy, young men to test the two dairy products. For a subset of seven subjects, RNA sequencing was used to measure gene expression in blood collected during postprandial tests and after two weeks daily intake. We found that the postprandial response in insulin was different for probiotic yoghurt as compared to that of acidified milk. Moreover changes in several clinical biomarkers were associated with changes in the expression of genes representing six metabolic genesets. Assessment of the postprandial effects of each dairy product on gene expression by geneset enrichment analysis revealed significant, similar modulation of inflammatory and glycolytic genes after both probiotic yoghurt and acidified milk intake, although distinct kinetic characteristics of the modulation differentiated the dairy products. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor was a major contributor to the down-regulation of the inflammatory genesets and was also positively associated with changes in circulating insulin at 2h after yoghurt intake (p = 0.05). Daily intake of the dairy products showed little effect on the fasting blood transcriptome. Probiotic yoghurt and acidified milk appear to affect similar gene pathways during the postprandial phase but differences in the timing and the extent of this modulation may lead to different physiological consequences. The functional relevance of these differences in gene expression is supported by their associations with circulating biomarkers
