Angular and Current-Target Correlations in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA
Correlations between charged particles in deep inelastic ep scattering have
been studied in the Breit frame with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an
integrated luminosity of 6.4 pb-1. Short-range correlations are analysed in
terms of the angular separation between current-region particles within a cone
centred around the virtual photon axis. Long-range correlations between the
current and target regions have also been measured. The data support
predictions for the scaling behaviour of the angular correlations at high Q2
and for anti-correlations between the current and target regions over a large
range in Q2 and in the Bjorken scaling variable x. Analytic QCD calculations
and Monte Carlo models correctly describe the trends of the data at high Q2,
but show quantitative discrepancies. The data show differences between the
correlations in deep inelastic scattering and e+e- annihilation.Comment: 26 pages including 10 figures (submitted to Eur. J. Phys. C

DOE mixed wastes: What are they and where can thermal technologies be applied
The Mixed Waste Treatment Project (MWTP) has collected and analyzed mixed low-level waste data to assist in developing treatment capability for the US Department of Energy is (DOE) wastes. Initial data on the characteristics of mixed waste was obtained from the Waste Management Information System (WMIS) data base, and has been updated based on visits to DOE sites where most of the wastes are generated and stored. The streams of interest to the MWTP have a current inventory of about 70,000 m[sup 3] and a generation rate of about 7,700 m[sup 3]/yr. The 12 sites with the most significant processing needs are Fernald, Hanford, K-25 (Oak Ridge), Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Rocky Flats Plant (RFP), Savannah River Site (SRS), and Y-12 (Oak Ridge). These 12 sites account for about 98% of the mixed waste volumes. The wastes have been assigned to specific waste characterization categories and a flowsheet that identifies applicable technologies has been developed. The largest waste stream category, when considering the current inventory in storage, is inorganic solids, with sludges, filter cakes, and residues the largest specific subcategories. Aqueous liquids are the largest currently generated stream. The other large categories are solid organics, metals wastes, and heterogenous wastes. Organic liquids, which have been a major focus, are the smallest of the categories. The major thermal treatment units include evaporators, incinerators, vitrifiers, metal melters, and off-gas treatment systems
An evoked potential mapping of transcallosal projections in the cat
In ten adult cats anesthetized with ketamine hydrochloride the neocortex was exposed and rectangular pulses (1msec, 0.5 Hz and variable intensity) were applied to discrete points of one side and transcallosal evoked potentials were recorded from the other. The stimulation and recording positions were determined on a cartesian map of most of the exposable neocortical areas and the potentials were analysed as to their components, voltage and latency. Passive spread and electrotonic potentials and the effects of increasing frequency were also analysed. The results showed large transcallosal potentials in some areas and an increase of potentials in the caudorostral direction, attaining the highest values in anteromedial areas of the suprasylvian gyrus. Confirming anatomical studies, a few silent spots were found in the motor and somesthetic cortex and in restricted posterior regions of the visual cortex, where small or zero voltages occurred. While causing weak contralateral potentials, stimulation of some posterior sites provoked high voltage potentials in anterior regions of the side being stimulated and in the corresponding area of the opposite site. These posterior sites are. poorly interconnected by the corpus callosum. The L-shaped indirect connection described in this work may be involved in some types of epilepsy and may explain the effectiveness of partial callosotomy in their treatment
Can large scintillators be used for solar-axion searches to test the cosmological axion-photon oscillation proposal?
Solar-axion interaction rates in NaI, CsI and Xe scintillators via the
axio-electric effect were calculated. A table is presented with photoelectric
and axioelectric cross sections, solar-axion fluxes, and the interaction rates
from 2.0 to 10.0 keV. The results imply that annual-modulation data of large
NaI and CsI arrays, and large Xe scintillation chambers, might be made
sensitive enough to probe coupling to photons at levels required to explain
axion-photon oscillation phenomena proposed to explain the survival of
high-energy photons traveling cosmological distances. The DAMAA/LIBRA data are
used to demonstrate the power of the model-independent annual modulation due to
the seasonal variation in the earth sun distance.Comment: 7 pages and no figure

DOE's mixed waste inventory and waste generation rates
This document contains the inventories (70,000 cubic meters) and generation rates (7,700 cubic meters/ year) of low-level mixed wastes for the U.S. DOE. The twelve sites with the most significant processing needs are Fernald, Hanford, K-25, Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Padacuh Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Savannah River Site (SRS), and Y-12 plant. The largest inventories are located at INEL, Y-12, SRS, and K-25. The largest generation rates are located at INEL, Y-12, and SRS
