Four species of Diodia are transferred to Diodella, and the new combinations are: Diodella gardneri, Diodella mello-barretoi, Diodella sarmentosa and Diodella scandens

Entanglement between Demand and Supply in Markets with Bandwagon Goods

Whenever customers' choices (e.g. to buy or not a given good) depend on others choices (cases coined 'positive externalities' or 'bandwagon effect' in the economic literature), the demand may be multiply valued: for a same posted price, there is either a small number of buyers, or a large one -- in which case one says that the customers coordinate. This leads to a dilemma for the seller: should he sell at a high price, targeting a small number of buyers, or at low price targeting a large number of buyers? In this paper we show that the interaction between demand and supply is even more complex than expected, leading to what we call the curse of coordination: the pricing strategy for the seller which aimed at maximizing his profit corresponds to posting a price which, not only assumes that the customers will coordinate, but also lies very near the critical price value at which such high demand no more exists. This is obtained by the detailed mathematical analysis of a particular model formally related to the Random Field Ising Model and to a model introduced in social sciences by T C Schelling in the 70's.Comment: Updated version, accepted for publication, Journal of Statistical Physics, online Dec 201

Nanomaterials for Advancing the Health Immunosensor

    Get PDF
Nanotechnology has exerted a significant impact in the development of biosensors allowing more sensible analytical methods. In health applications, the main challenge of the immunoassay is to reach the suitable limit of detection, recognizing different analytes in complex samples like whole blood, serum, urine, and other biological fluids. Different nanomaterials, including metallic, silica and magnetic nanoparticles, quantum dots, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, have been applied, mainly to improve charge electron transfer, catalytic activity, amount of immobilized biomolecules, low-background current, signal-to-noise ratio that consequently increase the sensitivity of immunosensors. Given the great impact of nanotechnology, this chapter intends to discuss new aspects of nanomaterials relating to immunosensor advancement

Evaluación de mezclas para sustrato y producción de pleurotus ostreatus (jacq. Ex fr.) P. Kumm

The pulp of Agave salmiana ssp. crassispina and Agave angustifolia ssp. tequilana var. azul, byproduct of the mezcal industry, was evaluated in different treatments with wheat bran, pine shavings, walnut shavings, cedar shavings and oats straw, used as substrate for the cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus, determining what mixture is the most adequate to cultivate the mushroom. A bromatological analysis was performed for each treatment at the beginning of the cultivation, determining the variables of moisture, ash, raw fiber, raw protein, lipids, total reducing sugars, as well as quantifying the biological efficiency of P. ostreatus. It was analyzed statistically through the HSD Tukey test, finding that the mixture of pulp of A. angustifolia ssp. tequilana var. azul mixed with 30 % of walnut shavings and 5% of wheat bran obtained a biological efficiency of 33.24 %

The spacetime associated with galactic dark matter halos

We show how an adequate post--Newtonian generalization can be obtained for Newtonian dark matter halos associated with an empiric density profile. Applying this approach to halos that follow from the well known numerical simulations of Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW), we derive all dynamical variables and show that NFW halos approximatelly follow an ideal gas type of equation of state which fits very well to a polytropic relation in the region outside the core. This fact suggests that ``outer'' regions of NFW halos might be related to equilibrium states in the non--extensive Statistical Mechanics formalism proposed by Tsallis.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur
