Fundamental Strings and Black Holes
We propose a black hole thermodynamic description of highly excited charged
and uncharged perturbative string states in 3+1 dimensional type II and 4+1
dimensional heterotic string theory. We also discuss the generalization to
extremal and non-extremal black holes carrying magnetic charges.Comment: 25 pages, harvmac; V2: Added reference
Extremal limit of the regular charged black holes in nonlinear electrodynamics
The near horizon limit of the extreme nonlinear black hole is investigated.
It is shown that resulting geometry belongs to the AdS2xS2 class with different
modules of curvatures of subspaces and could be described in terms of the
Lambert functions. It is demonstrated that the considered class of Lagrangians
does not admit solutions of the Bertotti-Robinson type

Logarithmic Corrections to Rotating Extremal Black Hole Entropy in Four and Five Dimensions
We compute logarithmic corrections to the entropy of rotating extremal black
holes using quantum entropy function i.e. Euclidean quantum gravity approach.
Our analysis includes five dimensional supersymmetric BMPV black holes in type
IIB string theory on T^5 and K3 x S^1 as well as in the five dimensional CHL
models, and also non-supersymmetric extremal Kerr black hole and slowly
rotating extremal Kerr-Newmann black holes in four dimensions. For BMPV black
holes our results are in perfect agreement with the microscopic results derived
from string theory. In particular we reproduce correctly the dependence of the
logarithmic corrections on the number of U(1) gauge fields in the theory, and
on the angular momentum carried by the black hole in different scaling limits.
We also explain the shortcomings of the Cardy limit in explaining the
logarithmic corrections in the limit in which the (super)gravity description of
these black holes becomes a valid approximation. For non-supersymmetric
extremal black holes, e.g. for the extremal Kerr black hole in four dimensions,
our result provides a stringent testing ground for any microscopic explanation
of the black hole entropy, e.g. Kerr/CFT correspondence.Comment: LaTeX file, 50 pages; v2: added extensive discussion on the relation

Logarithmic Corrections to N=2 Black Hole Entropy: An Infrared Window into the Microstates
Logarithmic corrections to the extremal black hole entropy can be computed
purely in terms of the low energy data -- the spectrum of massless fields and
their interaction. The demand of reproducing these corrections provides a
strong constraint on any microscopic theory of quantum gravity that attempts to
explain the black hole entropy. Using quantum entropy function formalism we
compute logarithmic corrections to the entropy of half BPS black holes in N=2
supersymmetric string theories. Our results allow us to test various proposals
for the measure in the OSV formula, and we find agreement with the measure
proposed by Denef and Moore if we assume their result to be valid at weak
topological string coupling. Our analysis also gives the logarithmic
corrections to the entropy of extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes in
ordinary Einstein-Maxwell theory.Comment: LaTeX file, 66 page
On the Thermodynamic Geometry of BTZ Black Holes
We investigate the Ruppeiner geometry of the thermodynamic state space of a
general class of BTZ black holes. It is shown that the thermodynamic geometry
is flat for both the rotating BTZ and the BTZ Chern Simons black holes in the
canonical ensemble. We further investigate the inclusion of thermal
fluctuations to the canonical entropy of the BTZ Chern Simons black holes and
show that the leading logartithmic correction due to Carlip is reproduced. We
establish that the inclusion of thermal fluctuations induces a non zero scalar
curvature to the thermodynamic geometry.Comment: 1+17 pages, LaTeX, 4 eps figure
Normal mode analysis for scalar fields in BTZ black hole background
We analyze the possibility of inequivalent boundary conditions for a scalar
field propagating in the BTZ black hole space-time. We find that for certain
ranges of the black hole parameters, the Klein-Gordon operator admits a
one-parameter family of self-adjoint extensions. For this range, the BTZ
space-time is not quantum mechanically complete. We suggest a physically
motivated method for determining the spectra of the Klein-Gordon operator.Comment: 6 pages, no figure, late
Identification of phenolic constituents of cytisus multiflorus
The phenolic composition of the ethanolic extract obtained from the flowers of the medicinal plant Cytisus
multiflorus has been elucidated by high performance liquid chromatography, electrospray mass spectrometry
and nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. The extract was mainly composed of flavones,
including the common chrysin, orientin, luteolin-5-O-glucoside, luteolin-7-O-glucoside, apigenin and
apigenin-7-O-glucoside, which appeared as minor components. The major flavone in the extract was
chrysin-7-O-B-D-glucopyranoside, and it also contained moderate amounts of a dihydroxyflavone isomer
of chrysin, as well as of 2''-O-pentosyl-6-C-hexosyl-luteolin, 2''-O-pentosyl-8-C-hexosyl-luteolin and 6''-
O-(3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaroyl)-2''-O-pentosyl-C-hexosyl-apigenin, which are not commonly found in
the Fabaceae family. Other novel phenolic compounds found in the ethanolic extract of C. multiflorus
comprised the flavones 2''-O-pentosyl-6-C-hexosyl-apigenin, 2''-O-pentosyl-8-C-hexosyl-apigenin and
6''-O-(3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaroyl)-200-O-pentosyl-C-hexosyl-luteolin. The assessment of the biological
activities of the main compounds of this extract are now keen, in order to determine their relevance in
the beneficial properties of the plant
