    Feeding spectra and activity of the freshwater crab Trichodactylus kensleyi (Decapoda: Brachyura: Trichodactylidae) at La Plata basin

    Background: In inland water systems, it is important to characterize the trophic links in order to identify the ‘trophic species’ and, from the studies of functional diversity, understand the dynamics of matter and energy in these environments. The aim of this study is to analyze the natural diet of Trichodactylus kensleyi of subtropical rainforest streams and corroborate the temporal variation in the trophic activity during day hours. Results: A total of 15 major taxonomic groups were recognized in gut contents. The index of relative importance identified the following main prey items in decreasing order of importance: vegetal remains, oligochaetes, chironomid larvae, and algae. A significant difference was found in the amount of full stomachs during day hours showing a less trophic activity at midday and afternoon. The index of relative importance values evidenced the consumption of different prey according to day moments. Results of the gut content indicate that T. kensleyi is an omnivorous crab like other trichodactylid species. Opportunistic behavior is revealed by the ingestion of organisms abundant in streams such as oligochaetes and chironomid larvae. The consumption of allochthonous plant debris shows the importance of this crab as shredder in subtropical streams. However, the effective assimilation of plant matter is yet unknown in trichodactylid crabs. Conclusions: This research provides knowledge that complements previous studies about trophic relationships of trichodactylid crabs and supported the importance of T. kensleyi in the transference of energy and matter from benthic community and riparian sources to superior trophic levels using both macro- and microfauna.Fil: Williner, Verónica.     Characteristics of tropical–extratropical cloud bands over tropical and subtropical South America simulated by BAM-1.2 and HadGEM3-GC3.1

    Tropical–extratropical cloud bands are common in South America (SAm), contributing significantly to the total rainy season precipitation. Thus, it is fundamental that climate and weather forecast models correctly represent them and their associated dynamic aspects. Adopting an event-based framework, we evaluate the performance of two global models in simulating the observed cloud bands over SAm: the Brazilian Global Atmospheric Model version 1.2 (BAM-1.2) and the Hadley Centre Global Environment Model in the Global Coupled configuration 3.1 (HadGEM3-GC3.1). Both models reproduce the main characteristics of cloud bands and the dynamical aspects leading to their development and persistence. Nonetheless, the biases in precipitation during simulated cloud bands contribute more than 50% of the bias in total precipitation in some regions. BAM-1.2 simulates fewer but more persistent cloud bands than observed; HadGEM3-GC3.1 simulates weaker cloud band activity during early summer and more persistent events after January than observed. In all models, the biases in cloud band events arise from the interaction between biases in the basic state and the synoptic-scale regional circulation. In the basic state, stronger upper level westerlies over the midlatitude South Pacific support the propagation of longer and slower Rossby waves towards subtropical SAm, increasing the duration of the cloud band events. This bias interacts with negative biases in the upper level westerlies over subtropical SAm, increasing the wind shear, hindering the propagation of synoptic-scale Rossby waves into lower latitudes, and resulting in biases in the cloud band location, intensity, and seasonality. The application in this study of an event-based framework robust to differences in model resolution and complexity enables the identification of small but critical biases in circulation. These biases are linked to synoptic-scale rainfall system biases and help to explain the season total rainfall model biases

    The Influence of Markov Decision Process Structure on the Possible Strategic Use of Working Memory and Episodic Memory

    Researchers use a variety of behavioral tasks to analyze the effect of biological manipulations on memory function. This research will benefit from a systematic mathematical method for analyzing memory demands in behavioral tasks. In the framework of reinforcement learning theory, these tasks can be mathematically described as partially-observable Markov decision processes. While a wealth of evidence collected over the past 15 years relates the basal ganglia to the reinforcement learning framework, only recently has much attention been paid to including psychological concepts such as working memory or episodic memory in these models. This paper presents an analysis that provides a quantitative description of memory states sufficient for correct choices at specific decision points. Using information from the mathematical structure of the task descriptions, we derive measures that indicate whether working memory (for one or more cues) or episodic memory can provide strategically useful information to an agent. In particular, the analysis determines which observed states must be maintained in or retrieved from memory to perform these specific tasks. We demonstrate the analysis on three simplified tasks as well as eight more complex memory tasks drawn from the animal and human literature (two alternation tasks, two sequence disambiguation tasks, two non-matching tasks, the 2-back task, and the 1-2-AX task). The results of these analyses agree with results from quantitative simulations of the task reported in previous publications and provide simple indications of the memory demands of the tasks which can require far less computation than a full simulation of the task. This may provide a basis for a quantitative behavioral stoichiometry of memory tasks

    First imaging results of an intraindividual comparison of (11)C-acetate and (18)F-fluorocholine PET/CT in patients with prostate cancer at early biochemical first or second relapse after prostatectomy or radiotherapy.

    PURPOSE: (18)F-Fluorocholine (FCH) and (11)C-acetate (ACE) PET are widely used for detection of recurrent prostate cancer (PC). We present the first results of a comparative, prospective PET/CT study of both tracers evaluated in the same patients presenting with recurrence and low PSA to compare the diagnostic information provided by the two tracers. METHODS: The study group comprised 23 patients studied for a rising PSA level after radical prostatectomy (RP, 7 patients, PSA ≤ 3 ng/ml), curative radiotherapy (RT, 7 patients, PSA ≤ 5 ng/ml) or RP and salvage RT (9 patients, PSA ≤ 5 ng/ml). Both FCH and ACE PET/CT scans were performed in a random sequence a median of 4 days (range 0 to 11 days) apart. FCH PET/CT was started at injection (307 ± 16 MBq) with a 10-min dynamic acquisition of the prostate bed, followed by a whole-body PET scan and late (45 min) imaging of the pelvis. ACE PET/CT was performed as a double whole-body PET scan starting 5 and 22 min after injection (994 ± 72 MBq), and a late view (45 min) of the prostate bed. PET/CT scans were blindly reviewed by two independent pairs of two experienced nuclear medicine physicians, discordant subgroup results being discussed to reach a consensus for positive, negative end equivocal results. RESULTS: PET results were concordant in 88 out of 92 local, regional and distant findings (Cohen's kappa 0.929). In particular, results were concordant in all patients concerning local status, bone metastases and distant findings. Lymph-node results were concordant in 19 patients and different in 4 patients. On a per-patient basis results were concordant in 22 of 23 patients (14 positive, 5 negative and 3 equivocal). In only one patient was ACE PET/CT positive for nodal metastases while FCH PET/CT was overall negative; interestingly, the ACE-positive and FCH-negative lymph nodes became positive in a second FCH PET/CT scan performed a few months later. CONCLUSION: Overall, ACE and FCH PET/CT showed excellent concordance, on both a per-lesion and a per-patient basis, suggesting that both tracers perform equally for recurrent prostate cancer staging

    Plant Tolerance Mechanisms to Soil Salinity Contribute to the Expansion of Agriculture and Livestock Production in Argentina

    This chapter addresses salt tolerance mechanisms in crops and woody species cultivated in Argentina, highlighting the contribution of local research to these topics. Work on forages and woody species represents approximately half of this research that has been published by Argentine authors in international journals. Basic research on plant salinity mounts to only 12% of the total, indicating that it still does not attract sufficient consideration among researchers. Among forage plants, attention in this chapter is focused on Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana Kunth), while in woody perennials, salt tolerance mechanisms in Prosopis, which have been extensively investigated locally, are reported. Despite the importance of soybean in Argentine economy, as well as that of other crops such as maize, wheat, sunflower, relatively little research attention has been paid to salinity issues in these major field crops.
