Respect: Results of a pilot project designed to improve behaviour in English football
The research on which this article reports arose from recognition by The English Football Association (FA) that poor behaviour in affiliated football was having widespread and deleterious effects on the game, at every level, including a loss of about 7,000 referees each year. In order to address these concerns, The FA implemented a programme of pro-social behaviour change, branded ‘Respect’, and commissioned research into a 3 month pilot project in a small number of County FAs during the spring of 2008. In designing the evaluation for the Respect Pilot the researchers attempted to adhere to best practice in programme evaluation by addressing both the process and outcomes of the intended change programme (Coalter, 2007; Pawson, 2006; Weiss, 1998) and by working with a logic model that could be adapted over time (Aspen Institute, 2003; Schmitz and Parsons, 2007). The four main stakeholder groups identified to take part in the Pilot were players, coaches, referees and spectators/parents, for three age groups – Under 10, Under 16 and Open Age. Three different interventions were tested at the matches: designated spectator areas, codes of conduct with sanctions and only the captain being allowed to talk to the referee. Interviews were conducted with the four stakeholder groups at three games in each age group. In addition, week-by-week behaviour assessments from 583 trial games were entered online by over 1,000 people. Overall, both enjoyment and behaviour scores among the Active (experimental) teams were perceived to be significantly better than that among the matched Control teams (with no interventions). The experimental teams also ranked all three interventions highly over the ten weeks, with the designated spectator areas rated best, followed by the signing of codes of practice second and only captains talking to referees third. The results are discussed in relation to the future plans for the Respect campaign and the efficacy of the original logic model
Irrelevant Interactions without Composite Operators - A Remark on the Universality of Second Order Phase Transitions
We study the critical behaviour of symmetric theory including
irrelevant terms of the form in the bare action,
where is the UV cutoff (corresponding e.g. to the inverse lattice
spacing for a spin system). The main technical tool is renormalization theory
based on the flow equations of the renormalization group which permits to
establish the required convergence statements in generality and rigour. As a
consequence the effect of irrelevant terms on the critical behaviour may be
studied to any order without using renormalization theory for composite
operators. This is a technical simplification and seems preferable from the
physical point of view. In this short note we restrict for simplicity to the
symmetry class of the Ising model, i.e. one component theory. The

Absorbate-Induced Piezochromism in a Porous Molecular Crystal
Atmospherically stable porous frameworks
and materials are interesting
for heterogeneous solid–gas applications. One motivation is
the direct and selective uptake of pollutant/hazardous gases, where
the material produces a measurable response in the presence of the
analyte. In this report, we present a combined experimental and theoretical
rationalization for the piezochromic response of a robust and porous
molecular crystal built from an extensively fluorinated trispyrazole.
The electronic response of the material is directly determined by
analyte uptake, which provokes a subtle lattice contraction and an
observable bathochromic shift in the optical absorption onset. Selectivity
for fluorinated absorbates is demonstrated, and toluene is also found
to crystallize within the pore. Furthermore, we demonstrate the application
of electronic structure calculations to predict a physicochemical
response, providing the foundations for the design of electronically
tunable porous solids with the chemical properties required for development
of novel gas-uptake media

The kinetics of ER fusion protein activation in vivo.
Reversibly switchable proteins are powerful tools with which to explore protein function in vitro and in vivo. For example, the activity of many proteins fused to the hormone-binding domain of the modified oestrogen receptor (ER(TAM)) can be regulated by provision or removal of 4-hydroxytamoxifen (4-OHT). Despite the widespread use of ER(TAM) fusions in vivo, inadequate data are available as to the most efficacious routes for systemic tamoxifen delivery. In this study, we have used two well-characterized ER(TAM) fusion proteins, both reversibly activated by 4-OHT, to compare the effectiveness and kinetics of 4-OHT delivery in mice in vivo by either tamoxifen in food or by intraperitoneal injection. Our data indicate that dietary tamoxifen offers an effective, facile and ethically preferable means for long-term activation of ER(TAM) fusion proteins in vivo.This is the final published version. Phase-locking of two self-seeded tapered amplifier lasers
We report on the phase-locking of two diode lasers based on self-seeded
tapered amplifiers. In these lasers, a reduction of linewidth is achieved using
narrow-band high-transmission interference filters for frequency selection. The
lasers combine a compact design with a Lorentzian linewidth below 200 kHz at an
output power of 300 mW. We characterize the phase noise of the phase-locked
laser system and study its potential for coherent beam-splitting in atom
