    Failure of leadership in Nigeria

    No full text
This paper argues in defence of the thesis that the leadership failure we experience in Nigeria is not the fault of our stars but the fault of Nigerians-leaders and the led alike. We should not abandon ourselves to fate. The efficient leadership Nigerians are in dire need of, will remain a mirage except we Nigerians, leaders and the led, change our attitude to politics and politicking. The first step towards changing this attitude, the paper argues, is to carefully identify the causes of misrule in Nigeria. One’s degree of success in articulating strategies for efficient leadership, is determined by one’s degree of success in discovering the possible causes of misrule. As a nation, our accuracy in identifying the causes of misrule in Nigeria and our sincerity in redressing misrule in Nigeria, have serious implications for the efficient leadership we Nigerians are in dire need of, the paper argues

    Formalized arguments

    No full text
This paper is a detailed study of formalized arguments. The paper argues in defense of the thesis that formalized arguments are of great importance to the overall development of the Nigerian nation. This importance, the paper opines, informed the decision of Nigerian Universities commission to popularize logic through making "Philosophy and Logic" a compulsory General Studies Course in Nigerian Universities. Formalized arguments, the paper argues, are the primary concerns of logic and logic itself "is sometimes regarded as the most fundamental branch of philosophy". All Nigerian under-graduates, the paper argues, are expected by the Nigerian Universities commission to study formalized arguments at the general studies level since "logic is primarily concerned with cases of formalized arguments" (Uduigwomen 43). While not expecting Nigeria's leader of the thought to register for courses in formalized arguments, this paper argues that leaders of thought in Nigeria, through the impact those who study formalized arguments have on them, must understand and use logical principles properly, to guard against fallacies in the articulation of policies

    No full text
In this paper, attempt was made to provide a critical exposition of the nature of philosophy and how it conceived and gave birth to other disciplines. The paper also brought to lime light the “pre-birth” relationship between these disciplines and philosophy, and how philosophy itself now relates with these new disciplines as a mother would do to her children

    No full text
In sub-Saharan Africa, the majority of businesses operate in the form of a Small and Medium Enterprise (SME). SMEs play a significant role in the economic development of many nations. This paper considers the business environment and entrepreneurship activities in the Sub-Saharan countries of Nigeria, Kenya, Senegal, South Sudan and Tanzania. The review of literature explores issues such as doing business in Africa, size and informality, start-up survival and closure, the determinants of growth and gender issues in African entrepreneurship. Using data from the World Bank Enterprise Survey, it reflects on the factors affecting investment and productivity in Africa as follows: education of the labour force, access to infrastructure, access to finance, size of firms and other business climate variables. Finally, using data from the aforementioned survey, this paper draws pertinent conclusions on the business environment of the region in focus
