Distributional and behavioural effects of the German labour market reform
"We estimate the effects of the reform of German Unemployment Insurance that replaced the wage-related Unemployment Assistance with an income maintenance Programme and stronger means testing. We model the tax-benefit system and use the Socio-Economic Panel. We estimate a discrete labour supply model and simulate the behavioural and distributional effects using the pseudo distribution method. Poverty and inequality decline overall, since households with children and low incomes gain, while those who used to earn high wages and received high unemployment transfers lose most. The behavioural responses mitigate the redistributive impact of the reform." Oxidation of Columbium-Chromium Alloys at Elevated Temperatures
Screening studies of the oxidation characteristics of binary alloys of columbium (Ref. 1) showed that chromium was an additive element worthy of intensive study. The screening studies showed that chromium additions were especially helpful in decreasing the oxidation rate of columbium at 10000deg C and were somewhat less beneficial at 12000deg C. It is the purpose of this investigation to study the oxidation characteristics of binary columbium-chromium alloys in more detail
Vertical axis wind turbine drive train transient dynamics
Start up of a vertical axis wind turbine causes transient torque oscillations in the drive train with peak torques which may be over two and one half times the rated torque of the turbine. A computer code, based on a lumped parameter model of the drive train, was developed and tested for the low cost 17 meter turbine; the results show excellent agreement with field data. The code was used to predict the effect of a slip clutch on transient torque oscillations. It was demonstrated that a slip clutch located between the motor and brake can reduce peak torques by thirty eight percent
