Comment on Higgs Inflation and Naturalness
We rebut the recent claim (arXiv:0912.5463) that Einstein-frame scattering in
the Higgs inflation model is unitary above the cut-off energy Lambda ~ Mp/xi.
We show explicitly how unitarity problems arise in both the Einstein and Jordan
frames of the theory. In a covariant gauge they arise from non-minimal Higgs
self-couplings, which cannot be removed by field redefinitions because the
target space is not flat. In unitary gauge, where there is only a single scalar
which can be redefined to achieve canonical kinetic terms, the unitarity

To what distances do we know the confining potential?
We argue that asymptotically linear static potential is built in into the
common procedure of extracting it from lattice Wilson loop measurements. To
illustrate the point, we extract the potential by the standard lattice method
in a model vacuum made of instantons. A beautiful infinitely rising linear
potential is obtained in the case where the true potential is actually
flattening. We argue that the flux tube formation might be also an artifact of
the lattice procedure and not necessarily a measured physical effect.
We conclude that at present the rising potential is known for sure up to no
more than about 0.7 fm. It may explain why no screening has been clearly
observed so far for adjoint sources and for fundamental sources but with
dynamical fermions.
Finally, we speculate on how confinement could be achieved even if the static

An equivalence evaluation of a nurse-moderated group-based internet support program for new mothers versus standard care: a pragmatic preference randomised controlled trial
BACKGROUND: All mothers in South Australia are offered a clinic or home-visit by a Child and Family Health community nurse in the initial postnatal weeks. Subsequent support is available on request from staff in community clinics and from a telephone helpline. The aim of the present study is to compare equivalence of a single clinic-based appointment plus a nurse-moderated group-based internet intervention when infants were aged 0-6 months versus a single home-visit together with subsequent standard services (the latter support was available to mothers in both study groups). METHODS/DESIGN: The evaluation utilised a pragmatic preference randomised trial comparing the equivalence of outcomes for mothers and infants across the two study groups. Eligible mothers were those whose services were provided by nurses working in one of six community clinics in the metropolitan region of Adelaide. Mothers were excluded if they did not have internet access, required an interpreter, or their nurse clinician recommended that they not participate due to issues such as domestic violence or substance abuse. Randomisation was based on the service identification number sequentially assigned to infants when referred to the Child and Family Health Services from birthing units (this was done by administrative staff who had no involvement in recruiting mothers, delivering the intervention, or analyzing results for the study). Consistent with design and power calculations, 819 mothers were recruited to the trial. The primary outcomes for the trial are parents' sense of competence and self-efficacy measured using standard self-report questionnaires. Secondary outcomes include the quality of mother-infant relationships, maternal social support, role satisfaction and maternal mental health, infant social-emotional and language development, and patterns of service utilisation. Maternal and infant outcomes will be evaluated using age-appropriate questionnaires when infants are aged <2 months (pre-intervention), 9, 15, and 21 months. DISCUSSION: We know of no previous study that has evaluated an intervention that combines the capacity of nurse and internet-based services to improve outcomes for mothers and infants. The knowledge gained from this study will inform the design and conduct of community-based postnatal mother and child support programs. Disease prevention versus data privacy : using landcover maps to inform spatial epidemic models
The availability of epidemiological data in the early stages of an outbreak of an infectious disease is vital for modelers to make accurate predictions regarding the likely spread of disease and preferred intervention strategies. However, in some countries, the necessary demographic data are only available at an aggregate scale. We investigated the ability of models of livestock infectious diseases to predict epidemic spread and obtain optimal control policies in the event of imperfect, aggregated data. Taking a geographic information approach, we used land cover data to predict UK farm locations and investigated the influence of using these synthetic location data sets upon epidemiological predictions in the event of an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. When broadly classified land cover data were used to create synthetic farm locations, model predictions deviated significantly from those simulated on true data. However, when more resolved subclass land use data were used, moderate to highly accurate predictions of epidemic size, duration and optimal vaccination and ring culling strategies were obtained. This suggests that a geographic information approach may be useful where individual farm-level data are not available, to allow predictive analyses to be carried out regarding the likely spread of disease. This method can also be used for contingency planning in collaboration with policy makers to determine preferred control strategies in the event of a future outbreak of infectious disease in livestock
Searching for chiral logs in the static-light decay constant
Using the clover fermion action in unquenched QCD with pion masses as low as
420 MeV, we look for evidence for chiral logs in the static-light decay
constant. There is some evidence for a chiral log term, if the original static
theory of Eichten and Hill is used. However, the more precise data from the
static action of the ALPHA collaboration do not show any evidence for
non-linear dependence of the static-light decay constant on the light quark
mass. We make some comments on the connection between chiral perturbation
theory for decay constants of the pion and static-light meson
Actuation of Micro-Optomechanical Systems Via Cavity-Enhanced Optical Dipole Forces
We demonstrate a new type of optomechanical system employing a movable,
micron-scale waveguide evanescently-coupled to a high-Q optical microresonator.
Micron-scale displacements of the waveguide are observed for
milliwatt(mW)-level optical input powers. Measurement of the spatial variation
of the force on the waveguide indicates that it arises from a cavity-enhanced
optical dipole force due to the stored optical field of the resonator. This
force is used to realize an all-optical tunable filter operating with sub-mW
control power. A theoretical model of the system shows the maximum achievable
force to be independent of the intrinsic Q of the optical resonator and to
scale inversely with the cavity mode volume, suggesting that such forces may

A microchip optomechanical accelerometer
The monitoring of accelerations is essential for a variety of applications
ranging from inertial navigation to consumer electronics. The basic operation
principle of an accelerometer is to measure the displacement of a flexibly
mounted test mass; sensitive displacement measurement can be realized using
capacitive, piezo-electric, tunnel-current, or optical methods. While optical
readout provides superior displacement resolution and resilience to
electromagnetic interference, current optical accelerometers either do not
allow for chip-scale integration or require bulky test masses. Here we
demonstrate an optomechanical accelerometer that employs ultra-sensitive
all-optical displacement read-out using a planar photonic crystal cavity
monolithically integrated with a nano-tethered test mass of high mechanical
Q-factor. This device architecture allows for full on-chip integration and
achieves a broadband acceleration resolution of 10 \mu g/rt-Hz, a bandwidth
greater than 20 kHz, and a dynamic range of 50 dB with sub-milliwatt optical
power requirements. Moreover, the nano-gram test masses used here allow for
optomechanical back-action in the form of cooling or the optical spring effect,

Vaccination against Foot-and-mouth disease : do initial conditions affect its benefit?
When facing incursion of a major livestock infectious disease, the decision to implement a vaccination programme is made at the national level. To make this decision, governments must consider whether the benefits of vaccination are sufficient to outweigh potential additional costs, including further trade restrictions that may be imposed due to the implementation of vaccination. However, little consensus exists on the factors triggering its implementation on the field. This work explores the effect of several triggers in the implementation of a reactive vaccination-to-live policy when facing epidemics of foot-and-mouth disease. In particular, we tested whether changes in the location of the incursion and the delay of implementation would affect the epidemiological benefit of such a policy in the context of Scotland. To reach this goal, we used a spatial, premises-based model that has been extensively used to investigate the effectiveness of mitigation procedures in Great Britain. The results show that the decision to vaccinate, or not, is not straightforward and strongly depends on the underlying local structure of the population-at-risk. With regards to disease incursion preparedness, simply identifying areas of highest population density may not capture all complexities that may influence the spread of disease as well as the benefit of implementing vaccination. However, if a decision to vaccinate is made, we show that delaying its implementation in the field may markedly reduce its benefit. This work provides guidelines to support policy makers in their decision to implement, or not, a vaccination-to-live policy when facing epidemics of infectious livestock disease
Mirroring everyday clinical practice in clinical trial design: a new concept to improve the external validity of randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trials in the pharmacological treatment of major depression
Background: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials constitute the gold standard in clinical research when testing the efficacy of new psychopharmacological interventions in the treatment of major depression. However, the blinded use of placebo has been found to influence clinical trial outcomes and may bias patient
selection.
Discussion: To improve clinical trial design in major depression so as to reflect clinical practice more closely we propose to present patients with a balanced view of the benefits of study participation irrespective of their assignment to placebo or active treatment. In addition every participant should be given the option to finally
receive the active medication. A research agenda is outlined to evaluate the impact of the proposed changes on the efficacy of the drug to be evaluated and on the demographic and clinical characteristics of the enrollment fraction with regard to its representativeness of the eligible population.
Summary: We propose a list of measures to be taken to improve the external validity of double-blind, placebocontrolled trials in major depression. The recommended changes to clinical trial design may also be relevant for other psychiatric as well as medical disorders in which expectations regarding treatment outcome may affect the
outcome itself
Mid-mantle deformation inferred from seismic anisotropy
With time, convective processes in the Earth's mantle will tend to align crystals, grains and inclusions. This mantle fabric is detectable seismologically, as it produces an anisotropy in material properties—in particular, a directional dependence in seismic-wave velocity. This alignment is enhanced at the boundaries of the mantle where there are rapid changes in the direction and magnitude of mantle flow, and therefore most observations of anisotropy are confined to the uppermost mantle or lithosphere and the lowermost-mantle analogue of the lithosphere, the D" region. Here we present evidence from shear-wave splitting measurements for mid-mantle anisotropy in the vicinity of the 660-km discontinuity, the boundary between the upper and lower mantle. Deep-focus earthquakes in the Tonga–Kermadec and New Hebrides subduction zones recorded at Australian seismograph stations record some of the largest values of shear-wave splitting hitherto reported. The results suggest that, at least locally, there may exist a mid-mantle boundary layer, which could indicate the impediment of flow between the upper and lower mantle in this region
