Social disorganization and history of child sexual abuse against girls in sub-Saharan Africa : a multilevel analysis
Background:
Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a considerable public health problem. Less focus has been paid to the role of community level factors associated with CSA. The aim of this study was to examine the association between neighbourhood-level measures of social disorganization and CSA.
Methods:
We applied multiple multilevel logistic regression analysis on Demographic and Health Survey data for 6,351 adolescents from six countries in sub-Saharan Africa between 2006 and 2008.
Results:
The percentage of adolescents that had experienced CSA ranged from 1.04% to 5.84%. There was a significant variation in the odds of reporting CSA across the communities, suggesting 18% of the variation in CSA could be attributed to community level factors. Respondents currently employed were more likely to have reported CSA than those who were unemployed (odds ratio [OR] = 2.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.48 to 2.83). Respondents from communities with a high family disruption rate were 57% more likely to have reported CSA (OR=1.57, 95% CI 1.14 to 2.16).
Conclusion:
We found that exposure to CSA was associated with high community level of family disruption, thus suggesting that neighbourhoods may indeed have significant important effects on exposure to CSA. Further studies are needed to explore pathways that connect the individual and neighbourhood levels, that is, means through which deleterious neighbourhood effects are transmitted to individuals
Study on the Effectiveness of Computer Application Course to the Polytechnics Students in the Working Environment
Malaysia Polytechnic Transformation Program was launched to improve the quality of vocational and technical education in Malaysia and form a quality human capital capable of increasing productivity significantly. Human capital that produced should be the ICT literacy groups and will contribute to the needs of industry. Hence, Computer Application course that offered to the students must be revised from time to time and updated content to fulfill the needs of industry. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relevance of Computer Application course to the polytechnic graduates from the perceptions view of students and employers. Review and survey involved 375 students who have completed their six months industrial training and was continue study in the final semester currently on five polytechnics which have been identified through cluster sampling and purposive sampling. In order to get the perception of the employers, convenient sampling was used in this study. The instruments used are two sets of questionnaires adapted from University Putra Malaysia, the Exit Survey for Graduating Students and Stakeholders Survey for Outcome Based Education (OBE) - Industry / Employer / Alumni developed by Professor Dato Ir. Dr. Radin Umar Radin Sohadi. The pilot test obtained the Alpha Cronbach value of 0.962. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, mean, standard deviation, and percentage. Through this study, the highest mean value on attributes of the graduate attainment is derived from students’ perceptions is Lifelong Learning and information management, which was 3.74. Next, the research showed the lowest mean value of 3.60 on the thinking and scientific skills approach. The findings also show that the perception of the employers on polytechnic graduates that they have the ability to apply their knowledge of computer literacy into careers with the highest mean value of 4.20. However, only 52% of employers give opinion that’s Polytechnic graduates are able to act as a manager / leader with a mean value of 3.36. The findings also showed that 96% of employer agrees that BC101 course is relevant and fulfills market needs
Partial Volume Compensated Reconstruction of Three-dimensional Mass Shapes in Mammographic Images
Accurately reconstructing the three-dimensional mass shapes in mammographic images is important for classifying the abnormality into malignant or benign. In this paper, a partial volume compensated reconstruction technique for mass shapes is presented. The two-dimensional shapes of the masses are first automatically segmented using a region growing approach. The 3D mass shapes are then iteratively refined according to an algebraic reconstruction technique. Partial volume estimation is applied on the boundary to get a smoother 3D shape. Evaluation results show that the proposed algorithm improves the accuracy of the mass reconstruction
On renormalization group flows and the a-theorem in 6d
We study the extension of the approach to the a-theorem of Komargodski and
Schwimmer to quantum field theories in d=6 spacetime dimensions. The dilaton
effective action is obtained up to 6th order in derivatives. The anomaly flow
a_UV - a_IR is the coefficient of the 6-derivative Euler anomaly term in this
action. It then appears at order p^6 in the low energy limit of n-point
scattering amplitudes of the dilaton for n > 3. The detailed structure with the
correct anomaly coefficient is confirmed by direct calculation in two examples:
(i) the case of explicitly broken conformal symmetry is illustrated by the free
massive scalar field, and (ii) the case of spontaneously broken conformal
symmetry is demonstrated by the (2,0) theory on the Coulomb branch. In the
latter example, the dilaton is a dynamical field so 4-derivative terms in the
action also affect n-point amplitudes at order p^6. The calculation in the
(2,0) theory is done by analyzing an M5-brane probe in AdS_7 x S^4.
Given the confirmation in two distinct models, we attempt to use dispersion
relations to prove that the anomaly flow is positive in general. Unfortunately
the 4-point matrix element of the Euler anomaly is proportional to stu and
vanishes for forward scattering. Thus the optical theorem cannot be applied to
show positivity. Instead the anomaly flow is given by a dispersion sum rule in
which the integrand does not have definite sign. It may be possible to base a
proof of the a-theorem on the analyticity and unitarity properties of the
6-point function, but our preliminary study reveals some difficulties.Comment: 41 pages, 5 figure
Graphene plasmonics
Two rich and vibrant fields of investigation, graphene physics and
plasmonics, strongly overlap. Not only does graphene possess intrinsic plasmons
that are tunable and adjustable, but a combination of graphene with noble-metal
nanostructures promises a variety of exciting applications for conventional
plasmonics. The versatility of graphene means that graphene-based plasmonics
may enable the manufacture of novel optical devices working in different
frequency ranges, from terahertz to the visible, with extremely high speed, low
driving voltage, low power consumption and compact sizes. Here we review the

The prognosis of allocentric and egocentric neglect : evidence from clinical scans
We contrasted the neuroanatomical substrates of sub-acute and chronic visuospatial deficits associated with different aspects of unilateral neglect using computed tomography scans acquired as part of routine clinical diagnosis. Voxel-wise statistical analyses were conducted on a group of 160 stroke patients scanned at a sub-acute stage. Lesion-deficit relationships were assessed across the whole brain, separately for grey and white matter. We assessed lesions that were associated with behavioural performance (i) at a sub-acute stage (within 3 months of the stroke) and (ii) at a chronic stage (after 9 months post stroke). Allocentric and egocentric neglect symptoms at the sub-acute stage were associated with lesions to dissociated regions within the frontal lobe, amongst other regions. However the frontal lesions were not associated with neglect at the chronic stage. On the other hand, lesions in the angular gyrus were associated with persistent allocentric neglect. In contrast, lesions within the superior temporal gyrus extending into the supramarginal gyrus, as well as lesions within the basal ganglia and insula, were associated with persistent egocentric neglect. Damage within the temporo-parietal junction was associated with both types of neglect at the sub-acute stage and 9 months later. Furthermore, white matter disconnections resulting from damage along the superior longitudinal fasciculus were associated with both types of neglect and critically related to both sub-acute and chronic deficits. Finally, there was a significant difference in the lesion volume between patients who recovered from neglect and patients with chronic deficits. The findings presented provide evidence that (i) the lesion location and lesion size can be used to successfully predict the outcome of neglect based on clinical CT scans, (ii) lesion location alone can serve as a critical predictor for persistent neglect symptoms, (iii) wide spread lesions are associated with neglect symptoms at the sub-acute stage but only some of these are critical for predicting whether neglect will become a chronic disorder and (iv) the severity of behavioural symptoms can be a useful predictor of recovery in the absence of neuroimaging findings on clinical scans. We discuss the implications for understanding the symptoms of the neglect syndrome, the recovery of function and the use of clinical scans to predict outcome
Neuroinflammation, Mast Cells, and Glia: Dangerous Liaisons
The perspective of neuroinflammation as an epiphenomenon following neuron damage is being replaced by the awareness of glia and their importance in neural functions and disorders. Systemic inflammation generates signals that communicate with the brain and leads to changes in metabolism and behavior, with microglia assuming a pro-inflammatory phenotype. Identification of potential peripheral-to-central cellular links is thus a critical step in designing effective therapeutics. Mast cells may fulfill such a role. These resident immune cells are found close to and within peripheral nerves and in brain parenchyma/meninges, where they exercise a key role in orchestrating the inflammatory process from initiation through chronic activation. Mast cells and glia engage in crosstalk that contributes to accelerate disease progression; such interactions become exaggerated with aging and increased cell sensitivity to stress. Emerging evidence for oligodendrocytes, independent of myelin and support of axonal integrity, points to their having strong immune functions, innate immune receptor expression, and production/response to chemokines and cytokines that modulate immune responses in the central nervous system while engaging in crosstalk with microglia and astrocytes. In this review, we summarize the findings related to our understanding of the biology and cellular signaling mechanisms of neuroinflammation, with emphasis on mast cell-glia interactions
Improved Measurement of the Pseudoscalar Decay Constant
We present a new determination of the Ds decay constant, f_{Ds} using 5
million continuum charm events obtained with the CLEO II detector. Our value is
derived from our new measured ratio of widths for Ds -> mu nu/Ds -> phi pi of
0.173+/- 0.021 +/- 0.031. Taking the branching ratio for Ds -> phi pi as (3.6
+/- 0.9)% from the PDG, we extract f_{Ds} = (280 +/- 17 +/- 25 +/- 34){MeV}. We

Measurement of B(/\c->pKpi)
The /\c->pKpi yield has been measured in a sample of two-jet continuum events
containing a both an anticharm tag (Dbar) as well as an antiproton (e+e- ->
Dbar pbar X), with the antiproton in the hemisphere opposite the Dbar. Under
the hypothesis that such selection criteria tag e+e- -> Dbar pbar (/\c) X
events, the /\c->pkpi branching fraction can be determined by measuring the
pkpi yield in the same hemisphere as the antiprotons in our Dbar pbar X sample.
Combining our results from three independent types of anticharm tags, we obtain
B(/\c->pKpi)=(5.0+/-0.5+/-1.2)
