QCD Effective Actions at High Temperature and the Quasiparticle Picture
Transport theory is an efficient approach to derive an effective theory for
the soft modes of QCD at high temperature. It is known that the leading order
operators of this theory can be obtained from (semi-classical) kinetic
equations of quasiparticles carrying classical or quantum color charges. Higher
order operators can also be obtained. Discrepancy between these quasiparticle
models starts for dimension 4 operators, which converge in the limit of high
dimensional color representations. These quasiparticle models are reviewed and
compared.Comment: 5 pages, talk given at SEWM2002, Heidelberg, October 200
A Study of Adolescent Depression Among Middle School Students
Adolescent depression and teenage suicide should not be neglected and underestimated. While mental health is one of the ten health indicators that Healthy People 20 I 0 is focused on, and there are goals for the health community to work on, statistics are showing that teenagers in a county in Northern California were at high risk for mental health problem. This study was an introductory screening of the depression level of 7th graders attending middle school, and explored sources of adolescent perceived stress and routes of assistance. Results of the study show that almost one in every five 7th graders has symptoms of depression, and Asian students have the highest prevalence and a higher level of depression. Although most students are aware of counseling services being offered at school, only a few students have used the service for personal reasons. School nurses can play an important role in assessment, intervention, and referrals for students at risk for mental health problems
How to constitute an archive of oral memory and identity within the framework of a.P.T.O.: a few methodological proposals
In this paper I will focus on a few problems relating to the cataloguing of anthropological materials concerning the specificity of demo-ethnological and anthropological disciplines like context, confidentiality, the role of the ethnographer and the integrity of the field-work. In order to do this I will discuss the concepts of material and immaterial goods (TUCCI 1999) of objectivity and subjectivity in relation to memory and identity and verify whether the notion of cultural goods are appliable to memory and identity documentative materials (narratives etc.). Other questions I will try to face are: Whether we can consider memory and identity as objects of cultural property; The limits of this perspective; Other problems in documenting and archiving oral culture materials in relation to the identity and memory of the people

Beyond development: applying the human development paradigm to identifying children with special needs and disabilities
This paper explores two aspects of development in relation to children’s learning: cognitive developmental theories and the human development paradigm. In doing so the aim of the paper is to put forward first a critique of how developmental theories have been applied to construe what and how children with special educational needs (SEN) and disabilities learn; second to put forward how the human development approach, based on the capability approach, can broaden our understanding of development; and third to suggest a way in which both types of development can be brought together to foster a valuable and meaningful education for all children. In doing so the paper argues that relying on one single way to understand and measure children development is not only short sighted, but counterproductive in as much as it can serve the purpose of stigmatizing and labelling children and thus narrowing the opportunities for learning and flourishing. In relation to freedom, a notion of development which is too structured and focused on cognitive outcomes only delimits, and consequently, limits the opportunities and potential for learning of any child, but particularly children with learning difficulties
Recent advances in neutrino astrophysics
Neutrinos are produced by a variety of sources that comprise our Sun,
explosive environments such as core-collapse supernovae, the Earth and the
Early Universe. The precise origin of the recently discovered ultra-high energy
neutrinos is to be determined yet. These weakly interacting particles give us
information on their sources, although the neutrino fluxes can be modified when
neutrinos traverse an astrophysical environment. Here we highlight recent
advances in neutrino astrophysics and emphasise the important progress in our
understanding of neutrino flavour conversion in media.Comment: Proceedings for the Symposium "Frontiers of Fundamental Physics
