Changes and adaptation in landscapes: a historical perspective on coconut plantation in Vanuatu (South Pacific). International meeting on agrobiodiversity across landscapes in a changing world

At the end of the 19th century in the New Hebrides archipelago, coconut cultivation geared towards copra production was developed on colonial estates, then from the 1930s onwards by Melanesian smallholders, who saw it as a means of gaining a foothold in the trading economy. The expansion of coconut plantings transformed farming systems, led to changes in the cultivate plants d, disrupted traditional land use practices, and resulted in monetization and increased food dependency on imported products among rural populations. With the drop in copra prices since the 1980s, Vanuatu farmers had to invent a new model of coconut based agrosystems by introducing new staple crops and fruit trees in their monospecific coconut groves. In that way, they improved the biological diversity of the agrosystem which is more complex and more resistant to climatic hazard, pests, and economic risks. (Résumé d'auteur

Medium effects in K^+ nucleus interaction from consistent analysis of integral and differential cross sections

Self consistency in the analysis of transmission measurements for K^+ on several nuclei in the momentum range of 500-700 MeV/c is achieved with a "t_{eff}(rho)rho" potential and new results are derived for total cross sections. The imaginary part of the t_{eff} amplitude is found to increase linearly with the average nuclear density in excess of a threshold value. This phenomenological density dependence of the K^+ nucleus optical potential also gives rise to good agreement with recent measurements of differential cross sections for elastic scattering of 715 MeV/c K^+ by Li^6 and C.Comment: 11 pages, RevTeX, 2 Postscript figures, submitted Phys. Saturation properties of nuclear matter in a relativistic mean field model constrained by quark dynamics

We have built an effective Walecka-type hadronic Lagrangian in which the hadron masses and the density dependence of the coupling constants are deduced from the quark dynamics using a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The parameters of this Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model have been determined using the meson properties in the vacuum but also in the medium through the omega meson mass in nuclei measured by the TAPS collaboration. Ce rapport s'intéresse aux nouvelles dimensions de la citation dans les textes scientifiques dans le contexte numérique. A l'appui d'une étude exploratoire quantitative menée fin 2007 et début 2008 dans le domaine de la biologie moléculaire, de la physique appliquée et de l'économie-gestion, les résultats montrent une faible intégration de ressources Web dans les textes (en dehors des versions en ligne des vecteurs traditionnels), sauf pour la biologie moléculaire. L'étude met en évidence une typologie des mécanismes de liens développés par les éditeurs et les agrégateurs. Un ensemble de recommandations finales sont formulées pour accompagner cette économie du lien devenue aujourd'hui centrale pour les citations scientifiques

Ethnobotanique du cocotier au Vanuatu : une histoire de plante, de lieu et de personne

Au cours du onzième séminaire d'ethnobotanique autour du thème "Les fruits, nourritures ambiguës du corps et des pensées", nous traiterons de l'ethnobotanique du cocotier (Cocos nucifera) dans le village de Vêtuboso sur l'île de Vanua Lava (groupe des Banks, Vanuatu, Pacifique Sud). Même si la nomenclature variétale s'appuie principalement sur les propriétés morphologiques du fruit, il est impossible de comprendre son système de classification sans aborder la diversité de ses usages (techniques et culturels) de l'arbre en entier et des représentations qui lui sont associées (mythes et histoires d'origine, anthropomorphisme). Pour cela, il faut non seulement considérer la plante dans son ensemble mais aussi l'appréhender dans son espace de vie, la cocoteraie. Dans le village de Vêtuboso, la personne, le lieu et la plante forment un ensemble indissociable ; nous emprunterons le concept de dividualité développé par M. Strathern (1988) et S. Trees 'of the ancestors', trees 'of the Whites': Changes in the social value of the coconut palms and their space on Vanua Lava, Vanuatu.

The coconut palm in the village of Vêtuboso (Vanua Lava's island, Vanuatu, South Pacific) should be classified as a socially valued object. Present before the first migrants reached Vanuatu's coasts, this perennial plant is still associated with myths and material or immaterial multi-uses. With the development of copra industry 150 years ago, it became the tree 'of the Whites'. Thanks to a cultural geography approach, the authors will try to understand the change of the status of coconut palms in its new space, the coconut plantation, defined as the space 'of the Whites' which production practices and biological material has been inherited from. Its ew economical function is perceived as an unavoidable constraint since copra is the unique source of income for the people of Vêtuboso. Coconut plantation is also a 'greedy' space encroaching on the space of crop gardens and of the forest inhabited by spirits. It also definitely 'captures' land among a family during few generations because of coconut palms' longevity and multiplication. Thus, the coconut is perceived as the tree 'of the Whites' mainly for its relation to the place, the plantation. To enhance coconut's status, it has to be taken out of its actual space. Une approche de la conservation in situ par l'étude d'un système semencier informel : cas du cocotier au Vanuatu (Pacifique Sud)

La production de coprah occupe une place importante dans l'économie des petits pays du Pacifique Sud. Dans l'archipel du Vanuatu, la demande des planteurs pour du matériel végétal amélioré par la recherche et produit dans des champs semenciers centralisés est cependant fortement limitée par le coût des semences et les difficultés d'accès aux villages dans un contexte mondial marqué par le faible niveau des prix du coprah. Un système informel d 'approvisionnement en semences pourvoit en grande partie aux besoins de planteurs suivant des modalités encore mal connues. Une étude a été initiée en 1995 par le COGENT afin d'inventorier les cultivars conservés in situ par les fermiers au Vanuatu. Les premiers résultats de cette enquête, réalisée suivant des méthodes participatives, mettent en évidence la grande variété de morphotypes identifiés par les planteurs et les usages en relation avec ceux-ci.
