Ligophorus pilengas n. sp. (monogenea: ancyrocephalidae) from the introduced so-iuy mullet, mugil soiuy (teleostei: mugilidae), in the sea of Azov and the Black sea
The monogenean Ligophorus chabaudi was originally described on the gills of the flathead mullet, Mugil cephalus, and was subsequently reported on the So-iuy mullet, Mugil soiuy. However, the morphology of sclerotized parts and multivariate statistical analyses suggest that the form from the So-iuy mullet represents a new species. This study provides a description of the new species Ligophorus pilengas n. sp. and provides additional morphological data concerning the morphology of the ventral bar that might be useful for the diagnosis of Ligophorus. Ligophorus pilengas n. sp. is the second species of Ligophorus reported on the So-iuy mullet. Zoogeographical records indicate that L. pilengas n. sp. was probably introduced to the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov from the western Pacific Ocean together with its host.Balbuena Diaz-Pines, Juan Antonio, [email protected]
Phenotypic plasticity in haptoral structures of Ligophorus cephali (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) on the flathead mullet (Mugil cephalus): A Geometric Morphometric Approach
Evaluating phenotypic plasticity in attachment organs of parasites can provide information on the capacity to colonise new hosts and illuminate evolutionary processes driving host specificity. We analysed the variability in shape and size of the dorsal and ventral anchors of Ligophorus cephali from Mugil cephalus by means of geometric morphometrics and multivariate statistics. We also assessed the morphological integration between anchors and between the roots and points in order to gain insight into their functional morphology. Dorsal and ventral anchors showed a similar gradient of overall shape variation, but the amount of localised changes was much higher in the former. Statistical models describing variations in shape and size revealed clear differences between anchors. The dorsal anchor/bar complex seems more mobile than the ventral one in Ligophorus, and these differences may reflect different functional roles in attachment to the gills. The lower residual variation associated with the ventral anchor models suggests a tighter control of their shape and size, perhaps because these anchors seem to be responsible for firmer attachment and their size and shape would allow more effective responses to characteristics of the microenvironment within the individual host. Despite these putative functional differences, the high level of morphological integration indicates a concerted action between anchors. In addition, we found a slight, although significant, morphological integration between roots and points in both anchors, which suggests that a large fraction of the observed phenotypic variation does not compromise the functional role of anchors as levers. Given the low level of genetic variation in our sample, it is likely that much of the morphological variation reflects host-driven plastic responses. This supports the hypothesis of monogenean specificity through host-switching and rapid speciation. The present study demonstrates the potential of geometric morphometrics to provide new and previously unexplored insights into the functional morphology of attachment and evolutionary processes of host¿parasite coevolution
Ecologie et dynamique des populations de monogènes, ectoparasites de téléostéens marins : approche et contribution montpelliéraines / Ecology and population dynamics of Monogenea, ectoparasites of marine Teleostei : montpellieran approach and contribution
International audienceMonogeneans, a fully-fledged class of the Platyhelminth phylum, are represented by thousands of species, ectoparasites of aquatic vertebrates. Marine Teleosts are parasitized by the greatest number of them. These organisms arouse fundamental as well as applied questions, most of them tackled during the last decades by Louis Euzet and several of its colleagues of Montpellier. A synthesis of these ecological works is presented here, as some recent reflections relative to their population dynamics

Recreating nature in cities: a research program for the river’s renaturation in the Greater Lyon
From the 19th century, in Western Europe, urban sanitation was meant to create sewers as well as bury small rivers. With the impulse of environmental laws, engineering schemes that once aimed at shaping vegetation around the city is now trying to reintroduce it in the most natural way possible.
In that context, river restoration appears to be a strategic tool for the development of cities. It is also about linking districts to each other with plant pathways, creating public spaces, all while dealing with the issue of heat islands. River restoration designates the re-establishment of a river's natural functions, which used to be highly anthropized.
After a rhetorical review, the paper deals with the firsts results of Lyon’s river restoration research program. This research program is enacted by the Greater Lyon, the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) and an engineering agency Artelia. The paper especially treats the subject of Rize’s restoration. A former river which was entirely buried in the 19th century. This study contributes to the research on the “shallow” concept of a sustainable city through the consideration of the benefits and shortcomings of recreating a river in a dense urban area
Early and late onset sepsis and retinopathy of prematurity in a cohort of preterm infants
This study investigates the impact of antenatal and postnatal infection or inflammation on the onset and progression of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). We retrospectively collected clinical and demographic data of preterm infants with birth weight ≤ 1500 g or gestational age < 30 weeks admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of Verona from 2015 to 2019. Uni- and multivariable analysis was performed to evaluate the potential effect of selected variables on the occurrence of any stage ROP and its progression to severe ROP, defined as ROP requiring treatment. Two hundred and eighty neonates were enrolled and 60 of them developed ROP (21.4%). Oxygen need for 28 days and late-onset sepsis (LOS) increased the risk of any grade ROP after adjusting for birth weight and gestational age (OR 6.35, 95% CI 2.14-18.85 and OR 2.49, 95% CI 1.04-5.94, respectively). Days of mechanical ventilation and of non-invasive ventilation increased the risk of progression to severe ROP after adjusting for birth weight and gestational age (OR 1.08, CI 1.02-1.14 and OR 1.06, CI 1.01-1.11, respectively). Exposure to infection with production of inflammatory mediators may contribute to increase the risk of ROP occurrence in very preterm neonates
