High Resolution H I Distributions and Multi-Wavelength Analyses of Magellanic Spirals NGC 4618 and NGC 4625

We present a detailed analysis of high resolution H I observations of the Magellanic spiral galaxies NGC 4618 and NGC 4625. While the H I disk of NGC 4625 is remarkably quiescent with a nearly uniform velocity dispersion and no evidence of H I holes, there is a dynamic interplay between star formation and the distribution of neutral hydrogen in NGC 4618. We calculate the critical density for widespread star formation in each galaxy and find that star formation proceeds even where the surface density of the atomic gas is well below the critical density necessary for global star formation. There are strong spatial correlations in NGC 4618 between UV emission, 1.4 GHz radio continuum emission, and peaks in the H I column density. Despite the apparent overlap of the outer disks of the two galaxies, we find that they are kinematically distinct, indicating that NGC 4618 and NGC 4625 are not interacting. The structure of NGC 4618 and, in particular, the nature of its outer ring, are highly suggestive of an interaction, but the timing and nature of such an interaction remain unclear

Sax Rohmer (the pseudonym of Arthur Sarsfield Ward, 1883-1959) was one of the most widely read pop authors in the English-speaking world in the 20th century. His Fu Manchu first appeared in "The Zayat Kiss," in the British magazine Story-Teller (October 1912), followed by the novel The Insidious Dr. Fu-Manchu in 1913. After World War II Rohmer changed this sinister Chinese arch-criminal into a heroic anti-Communist. Further thrilled by radio versions, feature films, stage plays, television series, and even a Marvel comic book, millions of readers have shuddered in Rohmer's auras of tomb robbers, ancient Egyptian demons haunting asp-infested tunnels beneath the pyramids, voodoo rites and zombies, and vampires, communicated by carefully selected eastern lexical borrowings. Electrodiagnostic evaluation of carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common nerve entrapment. Electrodiagnostic (EDX) studies are a valid and reliable means of confirming the diagnosis. This monograph addresses the various EDX techniques used to evaluate the median nerve at the wrist. It also demonstrates the limitations of EDX studies with a focus on the sensitivity and specificity of EDX testing for CTS. The need to use reference values for populations such as diabetics and active workers, where normative values differ from conventional cutoffs used to confirm suspected CTS, is presented. Nonequilibrium thermodynamics and energy efficiency in weight loss diets

Carbohydrate restriction as a strategy for control of obesity is based on two effects: a behavioral effect, spontaneous reduction in caloric intake and a metabolic effect, an apparent reduction in energy efficiency, greater weight loss per calorie consumed. Variable energy efficiency is established in many contexts (hormonal imbalance, weight regain and knock-out experiments in animal models), but in the area of the effect of macronutrient composition on weight loss, controversy remains. Resistance to the idea comes from a perception that variable weight loss on isocaloric diets would somehow violate the laws of thermodynamics, that is, only caloric intake is important ("a calorie is a calorie"). Previous explanations of how the phenomenon occurs, based on equilibrium thermodynamics, emphasized the inefficiencies introduced by substrate cycling and requirements for increased gluconeogenesis. Living systems, however, are maintained far from equilibrium, and metabolism is controlled by the regulation of the rates of enzymatic reactions. The principles of nonequilibrium thermodynamics which emphasize kinetic fluxes as well as thermodynamic forces should therefore also be considered

Detection of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis in amphibians imported into the UK for the pet trade

There is increasing evidence that the global spread of the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) has been facilitated by the international trade in amphibians. Bd was first detected in the UK in 2004, and has since been detected in multiple wild amphibian populations. Most amphibians imported into the UK for the pet trade from outside the European Union enter the country via Heathrow Animal Reception Centre (HARC), where Bd positive animals have been previously detected. Data on the volume, diversity and origin of imported amphibians were collected for 59 consignments arriving at HARC between November 2009 and June 2012, along with a surveillance study to investigate the prevalence of Bd in these animals. Forty three amphibian genera were recorded, originating from 12 countries. It was estimated that 5000 – 7000 amphibians are imported through HARC into the UK annually for the pet trade. Bd was detected in consignments from the USA and Tanzania, in six genera, resulting in an overall prevalence of 3.6%. This suggests that imported amphibians are a source of Bd within the international pet trade
