Stable phase-locked operation of two- and three-channel arrays has been demonstrated at the 50 W output level. Preliminary experiments with a five-element array generated an output power of 95 W but phase-locked operation was not conclusively demonstrated

    Stacking interactions in single stranded nucleic acids give rise to configurations of an annealed rod-coil multiblock copolymer. Theoretical analysis identifies the resulting signatures for long homopolynucleotides: A non monotonous dependence of size on temperature, corresponding effects on cyclization and a plateau in the extension force law.     The Yamabe invariant for axially symmetric two Kerr black holes initial data

    An explicit 3-dimensional Riemannian metric is constructed which can be interpreted as the (conformal) sum of two Kerr black holes with aligned angular momentum. When the separation distance between them is large we prove that this metric has positive Ricci scalar and hence positive Yamabe invariant. This metric can be used to construct axially symmetric initial data for two Kerr black holes with large angular momentum.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure

    Microscopic formulation of the Zimm-Bragg model for the helix-coil transition

    A microscopic spin model is proposed for the phenomenological Zimm-Bragg model for the helix-coil transition in biopolymers. This model is shown to provide the same thermophysical properties of the original Zimm-Bragg model and it allows a very convenient framework to compute statistical quantities. Physical origins of this spin model are made transparent by an exact mapping into a one-dimensional Ising model with an external field. However, the dependence on temperature of the reduced external field turns out to differ from the standard one-dimensional Ising model and hence it gives rise to different thermophysical properties, despite the exact mapping connecting them. We discuss how this point has been frequently overlooked in the recent literature.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure

    We present a general construction of initial data for Einstein's equations containing an arbitrary number of black holes, each of which is instantaneously in equilibrium. Each black hole is taken to be a marginally trapped surface and plays the role of the inner boundary of the Cauchy surface. The black hole is taken to be instantaneously isolated if its outgoing null rays are shear-free. Starting from the choice of a conformal metric and the freely specifiable part of the extrinsic curvature in the bulk, we give a prescription for choosing the shape of the inner boundaries and the boundary conditions that must be imposed there.     The acute and chronic effects of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor injections on intraocular pressure: A review

    The acute and chronic effects of repeated intravitreal antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injections on intraocular pressure have not been fully characterized, and the development of sustained ocular hypertension could adversely affect patients who are at risk of glaucomatous optic neuropathy. As expected, volume-driven, acute ocular hypertension immediately follows intravitreal injection, but this pressure elevation is generally transient and well tolerated. Several medications have been investigated to limit acute ocular hypertension following anti-VEGF therapy, but the benefits of pretreatment are not conclusive. Chronic, sustained ocular hypertension, distinct from the short-term acute ocular hypertension after each injection, has also been associated with repeated intravitreal anti-VEGF injections. Risk factors for chronic ocular hypertension include the total number of injections, a greater frequency of injection, and preexisting glaucoma. Proposed mechanisms for chronic ocular hypertension include microparticle obstruction, toxic or inflammatory effects on trabecular meshwork, as well as alterations in outflow facility by anti-VEGF agents. Although limiting anti-VEGF therapy could minimize the risk of both acute and chronic ocular hypertension, foregoing anti-VEGF therapy risks progression of various macular diseases with resulting permanent central vision loss. While definitive evidence of damage to the retinal nerve fiber layer is lacking, patients receiving repeated injections should be monitored for ocular hypertension and patients in whom sustained ocular hypertension subsequently developed should be periodically monitored for glaucomatous changes with optic nerve optical coherence tomography and static visual fields

    Study of heterogeneous nucleation of eutectic Si in high-purity Al-Si alloys with Sr addition

The master-alloy was melt-spun resulting in the production of thin ribbons. The Al matrix of the ribbons contained entrained Al-Si eutectic droplets that were subsequently investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermodynamic calculations, and transmission electron microscopy techniques were employed to examine the effect of the Sr and P additions on eutectic undercoolings and nucleation phenomenon. Results indicate that, unlike P, Sr does not promote nucleation. Increasing Sr additions depressed the eutectic nucleation temperature. This may be a result of the formation of a Sr phase that could consume or detrimentally affect potent AlP nucleation sites.This work is financially supported by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and managerially supported from the OAD

    Statistical mechanics of base stacking and pairing in DNA melting

    We propose a statistical mechanics model for DNA melting in which base stacking and pairing are explicitly introduced as distinct degrees of freedom. Unlike previous approaches, this model describes thermal denaturation of DNA secondary structure in the whole experimentally accessible temperature range. Base pairing is described through a zipper model, base stacking through an Ising model. We present experimental data on the unstacking transition, obtained exploiting the observation that at moderately low pH this transition is moved down to experimentally accessible temperatures. These measurements confirm that the Ising model approach is indeed a good description of base stacking. On the other hand, comparison with the experiments points to the limitations of the simple zipper model description of base pairing.Comment: 13 pages with figure
