Enhanced co-solubilities of Ca and Si in YAG (Y3Al5O12)

General garnet structure (Ia3-d) is a forgiving host and can accommodate cations of varying sizes and valence states. Studies on highly yttrium doped alumina ceramics with Ca and Si contamination indicated that YAG precipitates in the ceramic had a propensity to allow simultaneous incorporation of small amounts of Ca and Si impurities in their structure. In this study, using chemical synthesis techniques it was shown that YAG can accommodate up to approximately 8 cation % Ca+2 and Si+4 (i.e. Ca+2/Y+3 and Si+4/Y+3) if they are incorporated together. Equilibrium conditions are established by calcining samples at 900 C for 2 hours and cooling the samples to room temperature in the furnace. Disappearing-phase method and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to determine solubility and co-solubility limits. Beyond the solubility limit phase separation occurred and three crystalline yttrium aluminate phases (YAG, YAP (yttrium aluminate perovskite, YAlO3), YAM (yttrium aluminate monoclinic, Y4Al2O9)) were observed. It is believed that the excess Ca and Si above co-solubility limit precipitate out in the form of an x-ray amorphous anorthite-like glass in the system

Benefits bilingual children should have when learning English as a Third language

Treball Final de Grau en Mestre o Mestra d'Educació Infantil. Codi: MI1040. Curs acadèmic: 2016-2017.The use of English as a lingua franca in Europe has increased the importance of language learning processes in modern education. Since an early age, English is introduced in the educational programmes. This research is focused in Betxí, a town from the Valencian Community, and a bilingual area where Valencian and Spanish are used daily. Since pre-school, children from this place have a plurilingual education, because they learn Valencian and Spanish as their mother tongues, plus English as a Third Language (L3). Some European research has demonstrated that being bilingual has some benefits over being monolingual when acquiring English as a L3. Thus, the main point of this research is to establish the benefits bilingual children from Betxí should have when acquiring English as a L3. However, this research deals with the following hypothesis: Did previous research really prove the benefits bilinguals should have when learning a L3? In this particular bilingual area, Valencian should be promoted, as well as every minority language in Europe. This study wants to show the benefits bilinguals have for promoting the use of minority languages in those bilingual places where other languages, such as Spanish in this case, play a primary role in society

This is the pre-peer reviewed version of the following article: Synthesis, In Silico Studies, Antiprotozoal and Cytotoxic Activities of Quinoline‐Biphenyl Hybrids, which has been published in final form at https://doi.org/10.1002/slct.201903835. This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Use of Self-Archived VersionsThe synthesis, in silico studies, antiprotozoal and cytotoxic activities of eleven quinoline‐biphenyl hybrids are described herein. The structure of the synthesized products was elucidated by a combination of spectrometric analyses. The synthesized compounds were evaluated against Plasmodium falciparum, and amastigotes forms both Leishmania (V) panamensis and Trypanosoma cruzi. Cytotoxicity was evaluated against human U‐937 macrophages. 8‐phenylquinoline (4 a) showed similar activity than meglumine antimoniate and 4‐(quinolin‐8‐yl)phenol (4 b) exhibited an activity similar to that of benznidazole. 8‐(3,4‐dimethoxyphenyl) quinoline (4 k) showed the best activity against P. falciparum. Although these compounds were toxic for mammalian U‐937 cells, however they may still have potential to be considered as candidates for drug development because of their antiparasite activity. Molecular docking was used to determine the in silico inhibition of some of the designed compounds against PfLDH and cruzipain, two important pharmacological targets involved in antiparasitic diseases. All hybrids were docked to the three‐dimensional structures of PfLDH and T. cruzi cruzipain as enzymes using AutoDock Vina. Notably, the docking results showed that the most active compounds 4‐(quinolin‐8‐yl)phenol (4 b, CE50: 11.33 μg/mL for T. cruzi) and 8‐(3,4‐dimethoxyphenyl) quinoline (4 k, CE50: 8.84 μg/mL for P. falciparum) exhibited the highest scoring pose (−7.5 and −7.7 kcal/mol, respectively). This result shows a good correlation between the predicted scores with the experimental data profile, suggesting that these ligands could act as competitive inhibitors of PfLDH or T. cruzi cruzipain enzymes, respectively. Finally, in silico ADME studies of the quinoline hybrids showed that these novel compounds have suitable drug‐like properties, making them potentially promising agents for antiprotozoal therapy

Column classification and selection for the determination of antibiotics by micellar liquid chromatography

Seven commercially available: Zorbax C18, Kromasil C18, C8, cyano, phenyl, monolithic and amino stationary phases columns, have been characterized and classified into broadly similar types to simplify column choice. The results were evaluated employing cluster analysis, which shows several interesting groups based on distances (Minkowski and Euclidean) in agreement with the manufacturer’s claims: chain density of the stationary phase used, and the presence or not a silica base. Finally, results showed that C18 columns offer the best chromatographic characteristics for separation and quantification of antibiotics in micellar liquid chromatography

Quantification of Tamoxifen in Pharmaceutical Formulations Using Micellar Liquid Chromatography

    Get PDF
This paper describes a micellar liquid chromatographic method used to analyze tamoxifen (TAMO) in pharmaceutical formulations, while focusing in its interesting features. Solid samples were solved in a micellar solution, irradiated at 254 nm, filtered and injected. Extraction steps were avoided and thus expediting the procedure. Tamoxifen was resolved in <5 min, using a mobile phase containing 0.15 M sodium dodecyl sulfate–7% pentanol at pH 3, running at 1.5 mL/min under an isocratic mode at 40°C through a C18 column. Detection was achieved by fluorescence by excitation at 260 nm and emission at 380 nm. The validation was performed following the requirements of the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) Tripartite Guidelines in terms of: specificity, sensitivity, calibration range (0.2 – 20 mg/L), accuracy (98.8 – 101.7%), precision (<1.5%) and robustness (<6.2%). The method was applied to quantify TAMO in TAMO citrate tablets supplied in Spain, and was found appropriate for the quality control of TAMO formulation
