Review of Our Life is Love: The Quaker Spiritual Journey by Marcelle Martin (San Francisco, California: Inner Light Books, 2016)

I feel somewhat reluctant to write a review of this book. Not because I fear being too critical of it, but because I fear being too complimentary. Full disclosure: Not only did I have the privilege of writing the preface to Our Life is Love, but I read drafts of some of the chapters as they were being written when Marcelle Martin was the Mullen Writing Fellow at Earlham School of Religion. I also know Martin personally, and her life authentically accords with what she has written, indeed, her life is love. So naturally I feel a deep investment in its reception, promotion, and a hope for a wide readership. I will also confess that it supported and confirmed much of my own research and interpretation of early Quaker history as a movement of transformational holiness, and I appreciate the methodology of a narrative and participatory approach. Martin also helped expand my vision of contemporary Quaker spirituality beyond familiar terrain, as my thinking about Quaker holiness has continued to evolve. The great strength of the book is found in Martin’s ability to translate the early Quaker mystical experience, which can feel alien and unreal in the demise of traditional religious narrative today, into a meaningful context

Structured Interview Tools: Insights and Issues from Assessing Wellbeing of Fishermen Adapting to Change Using Scoring and Ranking Questions

    Get PDF
This case discusses the use of researcher-administered structured interview tools, with ranking and scoring exercises, combined with more open-ended fluid interviews. Drawing on empirical work applying methods from wellbeing research to understanding the social impacts of change in a small-scale fishing community in the East of England, I discuss the insights that were gained from using these tools and some of the methodological issues I encountered. Finally, I reflect on my experience and some of the ethical questions that arose when using these tools. In doing so, I explain my decision to abandon the use of these tools and to privilege a less structured interview approach

Mapping a multi-sensory identity territory at the early design stage

This article presents a kansei design methodology. It is placed at the very beginning of the design process and aims to influence the following steps in order to improve the user's understanding and experiencing of the designed product. The experimentation combines in a subtle way the design thinking approach of learning by doing and the kansei engineering quantitative approach. The research presented is based on the results of a previous study that defined the semantic and emotional scope of future hybrid cars for European using visual stimuli. This kansei design methodology creates and assesses multi-sensory atmospheres is order to provide tangible direction composed of vision, touch, hearing and smell stimuli. From the cognitive and affective responses of the 42 participants we were able to detail 3 directions for future cars interiors that aim to enrich the styling design briefs and to influence the design strategies such as the management of the different grades. The research presented here was supported by the Kansei Design department from Toyota Motor Europe (TME-KD). This collaboration also brought an industrial context to it.SUPPORTED BY TOYOTA EUROP

Botanical Fabrication: A research project at the intersection of design, botany and horticulture

‘Botanical Fabrication’ is an on-going research initiative which investigates how an understanding of botany and horticultural techniques can challenge the design process and lead to alternative sustainable manufacturing or ‘eco-facturing’ tools. This paper presents different phases of the project, from an initial research workshop (2012), to an exhibition-based experiment (Botanical Factory, 2013) and includes current work in progress (Solar Gourd, 2015) so as to articulate a critical analysis of the work to date. In a context where we urgently need to devise new principles to live, manufacture and consume within the ecological capacity of our finite planet, the paper argues for the development of a new framework for slow manufacturing with plant systems. From Darwin’s research into plant movements to our current understanding of plant physics and biomechanics, designers can begin to integrate botanical and horticultural knowledge to play with the environment of plant growth and envision production chains of a new type

Race, Sex, and Redemption in Monster\u27s Ball

In this paper, we explore the way that interracial relationships between blacks and whites come to be represented as problematic for mainstream audiences. By looking specifically at the film Monster\u27s Ball (2001), we examine how race is used to identify and characterize our culture\u27s standard protagonist, the white male, and at how white male sexuality is constructed through the black female. Particularly striking in this film is how the social and institutional structures that create and reiterate problems of race are used to characterize the movie\u27s central protagonists, yet then evaded and submerged in the discourse of romance
