Statistical comparison of clouds and star clusters
The extent to which the projected distribution of stars in a cluster is due
to a large-scale radial gradient, and the extent to which it is due to fractal
sub-structure, can be quantified -- statistically -- using the measure . Here is the normalized mean edge length of its
minimum spanning tree (i.e. the shortest network of edges connecting all stars
in the cluster) and is the correlation length (i.e. the normalized
mean separation between all pairs of stars).
We show how can be indirectly applied to grey-scale images by
decomposing the image into a distribution of points from which and
can be calculated. This provides a powerful technique for comparing
the distribution of dense gas in a molecular cloud with the distribution of the
stars that condense out of it. We illustrate the application of this technique

Yoga practice in the UK: a cross- sectional survey of motivation, health benefits and behaviours
Objectives Despite the popularity of yoga and evidence of its positive effects on physical and mental health, little is known about yoga practice in the UK. This study investigated the characteristics of people who practise yoga, reasons for initiating and maintaining practice, and perceived impact of yoga on health and well-being.
Design, setting and participants A cross-sectional online anonymous survey distributed through UK-based yoga organisations, studios and events, through email invites and flyers. 2434 yoga practitioners completed the survey, including 903 yoga teachers: 87% were women, 91% white and 71% degree educated; mean age was 48.7 years.
Main outcome measures Perceived impact of yoga on health conditions, health outcomes and injuries. Relationships between yoga practice and measures of health, lifestyle, stress and well-being.
Results In comparison with national population norms, participants reported significantly higher well-being but also higher anxiety; lower perceived stress, body mass index and incidence of obesity, and higher rates of positive health behaviours. 47% reported changing their motivations to practise yoga, with general wellness and fitness key to initial uptake, and stress management and spirituality important to current practice. 16% of participants reported starting yoga to manage a physical or mental health condition. Respondents reported the value of yoga for a wide range of health conditions, most notably for musculoskeletal and mental health conditions. 20.7% reported at least one yoga-related injury over their lifetime. Controlling for demographic factors, frequency of yoga practice accounted for small but significant variance in health-related regression models (p<0.001).
Conclusion The findings of this first detailed UK survey were consistent with surveys in other Western countries. Yoga was perceived to have a positive impact on physical and mental health conditions and was linked to positive health behaviours. Further investigation of yoga’s role in self-care could inform health-related challenges faced by many countries
Entanglement scaling at first order phase transitions
First order quantum phase transitions (1QPTs) are signaled, in the
thermodynamic limit, by discontinuous changes in the ground state properties.
These discontinuities affect expectation values of observables, including
spatial correlations. When a 1QPT is crossed in the vicinity of a second order
one (2QPT), due to the correlation length divergence of the latter, the
corresponding ground state is modified and it becomes increasingly difficult to
determine the order of the transition when the size of the system is finite.
Here we show that, in such situations, it is possible to apply finite size
scaling to entanglement measures, as it has recently been done for the order
parameters and the energy gap, in order to recover the correct thermodynamic
limit. Such a finite size scaling can unambigously discriminate between first
and second order phase transitions in the vicinity of multricritical points
even when the singularities displayed by entanglement measures lead to
controversial results
Three-frequency resonances in dynamical systems
We investigate numerically and experimentally dynamical systems having three
interacting frequencies: a discrete mapping (a circle map), an exactly solvable
model (a system of coupled ordinary differential equations), and an
experimental device (an electronic oscillator). We compare the hierarchies of
three-frequency resonances we find in each of these systems. All three show
similar qualitative behaviour, suggesting the existence of generic features in

Effect of Larval Nutrition on Maternal mRNA Contribution to the Drosophila Egg.
Embryonic development begins under the control of maternal gene products, mRNAs and proteins that the mother deposits into the egg; the zygotic genome is activated some time later. Maternal control of early development is conserved across metazoans. Gene products contributed by mothers are critical to many early developmental processes, and set up trajectories for the rest of development. Maternal deposition of these factors is an often-overlooked aspect of parental investment. If the mother experiences challenging environmental conditions, such as poor nutrition, previous studies in Drosophila melanogaster have demonstrated a plastic response wherein these mothers may produce larger eggs to buffer the offspring against the same difficult environment. This additional investment can produce offspring that are more fit in the challenging environment. With this study, we ask whether D. melanogaster mothers who experience poor nutrition during their own development change their gene product contribution to the egg. We perform mRNA-Seq on eggs at a stage where all mRNAs are maternally derived, from mothers with different degrees of nutritional limitation. We find that nutritional limitation produces similar transcript changes at all degrees of limitation tested. Genes that have lower transcript abundance in nutritionally limited mothers are those involved in translation, which is likely one of the most energetically costly processes occurring in the early embryo. We find an increase in transcripts for transport and localization of macromolecules, and for the electron transport chain. The eggs produced by nutrition-limited mothers show a plastic response in mRNA deposition, which may better prepare the future embryo for development in a nutrition-limited environment

Remodeling of the uterine spiral arteries during pregnancy transforms them from high to low resistance vessels that lack vasoconstrictive properties. This process is essential to meet the demand for increased blood flow imposed by the growing fetus. Loss of endothelial and smooth muscle cells (SMC) is evident in remodeled arteries but the mechanisms underlying this transformation remain unknown. This study investigated the hypothesis that fetal trophoblast invading from the placenta instigate remodeling by triggering cell death in vascular SMC. Specifically, a role for trophoblast-derived death inducing cytokine tumor necrosis factor-α–related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) was investigated. Expression of the activating TRAIL receptors R1 and R2 was detected by flow cytometry on human aortic SMC and by immunohistochemistry on spiral artery SMC. Recombinant human TRAIL induced human aortic SMC apoptosis, which was inhibited by antibodies against TRAIL-R1 or -R2. Perfusion of denuded spiral artery segments with recombinant human TRAIL also induced SMC apoptosis. Trophoblasts isolated from first trimester placenta expressed membrane-associated TRAIL and induced apoptosis of human aortic SMC; apoptosis was significantly inhibited by a recombinant human TRAIL-R1:Fc construct. Trophoblast within the first trimester placental bed also expressed TRAIL. These data show that: 1) TRAIL causes SMC death; 2) trophoblast produce the apoptotic cytokine TRAIL; and 3) trophoblast induce SMC apoptosis via a TRAIL-dependent mechanism. We conclude that TRAIL produced by trophoblast causes apoptosis of SMC and thus may contribute to SMC loss during spiral artery remodeling in pregnancy
